As request by a fellow Amibay user, im upgrading his Paragon 1240 to a socketed 1240 (1260 ready). ive not done a paragon before but it seems identical to the Apollo.

Anyway im slightly embarrassed to say that i had run out of some parts when i said i would happily do the upgrade..well they have arrived now. (i had a stern chat to the storeman i can tell you!)

Well thats this weekend taken care of , fitting and testing the card. Although no improvement in performance will occur as im refitting the 68040 (probably) as we dont have a 68060 yet.

To do,

remove cpu & rom , fit cpu socket and reprogram the ROM.

Someones fitted a second RAM socket at some point and then removed it...probably because it wont fit in the A1200 if this is done. (keyboard hits the simm socket even without ram fitted.)

updates over the weekend.

mike.

the paragon is an apollo mike, they used to called magnums as well:)

any chance of some info on that capacitor next to the clk jumper under the cpu, never seen that before.

scratch that its the same on mine just took a peek sorry.

thought it was - looks identical in every way :-)

todays little update - stripped the card and had a good look at it.

Some battery damage is starting to occur but its very minimal - i'll do that.

and ill clean up the second simm socket too..

hair cut now :-)

video on the way too but its very shaky with one hand !!!

I really envy that desolder tool. I have ordered one with a manual pump in it.

its a horrible vid but you get the point i guess. i have some steady tools somewhere but i cant find them at the mo..

but yes a great tool :-)

But hey great job  The tool really is a plus I'll wait mine, cause there are components so close to the work area, I've ordered a cheap one for the same job basically. (upping to 040 40)

have you thought about making a small brace to hold the work still for two handed stuff?(no mike, not for video's)

the trick with these stations i found was to move the nozzle in a small rotary action on the pins,i usaully add lots of flux paste as well.

but yes.i get the point:)

HI Roy

i have a steady with two little clamps on it - just found it now ive finished...typical.

thats what happens when i tidy up - i cant find a damn thing.

yep thats how i use it , i rotate as its unsoldering and that (usually) stops the pin clinging on with a tiny tack of solder but i do a wiggle test on each pin before removal anyway.

thats it now , just some testing. final clean and inspection then add a label and box for the customer.

oh add libs to a floppy for him too.

mike.

your going to laugh at me for this, but here goes.

i actually use a block of wood with two smaller peices for hands with four bolts to tighten it up:lol:(it works like a large hand),i found the steadys are a bit weak for cards that have some wieght to them and move about a bit.

im always loosing things in boxes and hardly finding them again untill i have a clean out, thats probably why ive got two or three of every tool

thats a good idea Roy, i like it. but im not sure having lumps of wood in the house would go down well..Apollo bits all over the table are bad enough but at least pack everything away now in a nice box when ive done :-0

testing done and 68040 refitted & fan too.

a few pics and then i'll box it up for posting tomorrow.

mike.

The yellow haze on the pics is from my LCD tv - i refuse to strip the tv again, i'll have to get another.

Thank you for you custom Colin.
