Hello everyone, I know I haven't been on here in a long time, but I broke my old pentium system:Doh::picard. Shame really as it was a Tyan Tomcat with dual CPU sockets. For some reason it hangs on post when it comes to checking the memory. I don't really know what happened. I was changing out the hard drive for a quieter model and it just stopped posting, with the screen lightly flickering while it sits there. So I am in need of replacing the motherboard. The case I have is an AT case and as such I will need an AT motherboard. I would prefer the system to use EDO RAM as that is what I have, but if SDRAM is the only socket available then I would need to purchase some RAM as well. It needs to have PCI and ISA, I know some Socket 7 motherboards support AGP but I don't know if my voodoo 3 3500 would work in it. I know this is just for playing old games, but there are a raft of games from 1995 or so to 1998 or so that run best in windows 95/98 (Eugh...) and on a slower machine like this that I would like to go back and play. I understand if no one has anything but I thought I would look here before perusing any of the auction sites as I trust this community much more than those other sites. I can also trade if I have something that someone else is interested in. Due to my health I've been trying to whittle down my hardware collection so I might have something there. But if anyone has something matching what I would like to purchase/trade for, please let me know here in the thread. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Nathan

-UPDATE- I fixed the motherboard as described below. I would still be interested in a MMX processor though so I have updated the name of the thread to reflect this while leaving the information originally in the thread intact. Thank you to everyone who had motherboards that were able and willing to assist. I very much appreciate it. As far as I can tell, the Tyan Tomcat IIID motherboard only supports up to 200MMX so that will be the chip I am looking for then.

It seems to me that any Socket 7 is "good enough" for your requirements. I have a bunch of different Pentium motherboards. But since you're from USA I'd guess you'll want to purchase something closer to you as postage is cheaper.

The problem is that I don't have a lot of experience with Pentium based systems. At that time I wasn't building computers I was just buying a pre-built machine. I know there are variances in every generation of product, but I don't have enough information in regards to socket 7 to make certain I get something that works and will continue to work well for at least the foreseeable future. My first built PC was an AMD K6-200 or so in late '97 or '98. Since then I've built probably close to 500 computers for friends, family, and clients. But for some reason getting a hold of an early pentium, say p-70 to p-233MMX system is a little difficult around here, and getting one that was custom built even more so. But I won't discount your offer kixs, yes postage will be much cheaper coming from in the U.S., but I have to have someone who has one they wish to sell or trade for in the U.S. first. :)

Kind Regards,

Nathan

I am guessing 200 or 233 if you have it. I have some good news for me, but bad news for the thread. I fixed the motherboard. :) I am happy to say that Tyan still had the manual for the Tomcat IIID motherboard. So, I scoured the manual and checked every jumper and connector until I found a connector that was supposed to be bridged, but wasn't. Turns out the jumper fell off when I was working with the ISA sound card and was lying in the bottom of the case. Put it back on and Voila!!! It works. However I am still interested in a MMX processor so I shall update the name of the thread if I can to reflect this. The jumper that fell off? It was a jumper specifically set to allow the BIOS to be flashed. Which explains why it would hang after showing the processor installed. Very interesting.

Quite interesting... but great news non-the-less. These socket 7 boards are durable :D

I would be interested in that 200MMX. I need to look in your other thread and see if there is anything else that stands out as interesting that I would like to procure before I finalize anything. :) I will look through the other thread of your classic computer hardware and see what I can see. I wish I had the money for the Roland RAP-10 let me tell you. I would look nice with the SCC-1, LAPC-1, SC-55MKII, CM-64, and MT-32 that I have. :p But as I said earlier. I have too much hardware already!
