Hi, what tool could I use on my PC to output some audio samples I have in wav format and convert them for the Amiga, for a tracker to use for example, please advise.

On PC you can use clones of Protracker - "Protracker 2 clone" ( 65kb load/save limit per sample) / Fastracker 2 clone to load wav files and then save them in iff format. Both has also sample editors. Both available for win/macos/linux/. Currently easier and faster would be using "clones" on your PC... but not everyone likes easy and fast methods, some still prefer real Amiga ;]

I think I'm going to get into FastTracker 2 Clone, you see I had a lot of samples made into IFF via some windows software called "GoldWave" which I bought, did a great job, anyway I was going to use something called "DSS version 3" on my Amiga (Digital Sound Studio) instead of using something like ProTracker etc but I found I had so many samples that loading them or rather previewing them before making any tune was a bind, very slow process.

I thought OK I should pick and choose the samples I was going to use for a certain track ahead of time on my PC and then find them again on my Amiga, but instead after you have shown me this FastTracker 2 Clone (just tried it seems great, last used it in the late 90s) I'm going to go via the PC route, I have all my samples mirrored on my PC anyway, all I wanted to do was make a tune or two to insert at random and in secret into one of my DJ mixes at some point later on down the road, a simple house/techno track, FastTracker 2 Clone might be just the ticket for a slightly higher quality option.

I was slightly worried about the low-bitrate nature of Amiga sampling etc and how it might sound but I was happy to go with it, but now... well with the ease I can browse and preview samples and with it all being slightly more instant on my PC I can now go to work on bashing out something and then maybe transferring to my Amiga whole at a later date as an *.xm or *.mod or whatever... so, any advice now on FastTracker 2 Clone would be a boon and thanks again for the help, I never would have given FastTracker 2 Clone a thought otherwise, cheers

There's also the Amigo Sampler VST plugin you can use in your DAW for that 8 bit type of sound. I've seen a few you tube videos in my recommended. I'm not affiliated in any way, just thought to mention it.

Adobe Audition (previously CoolEdit) also supports .iff format, but I don't think it can do batch conversion. You do have options to convert to other sample types and rates with dithering types etc, to squeeze out a bit more dynamic range at the cost of a little bit of extra noise.

This works very well! I use Cooledit and Renoise to create sounds and loops. Then shunt them over to the protracker clone and save them back out as a mod or save each sound back out in iff format.
