Well the first problem was trying to save a buck and circumventing eBay. Had you completed the transaction through eBay, you would have disputed the case and have your money back by now. Lessons learned.

The OP did say the seller's feedback was good and that's why he trusted him.
Victim blaming isn't a good look mate.
That is why i mentioned it (about good feedback) to avoid replies like this, but still got 3 of them
It doesnt matter if the feedback looked good. You lose ALL protections to save a few bucks.

For some feedback is a reflection of inner self. Heck, there are people that do so much beyond what listing stated.
For some, on the other hand, it is a mask, a facade, an RPG they attained high score in, but they would be happy to add auto-targeting to their arsenal if they can get away with it.

I've been saved in the past from scams that I totally would've fallen for just because someone else went the extra mile to tell me how they got him. So I can't be thankful enough to these people. It takes balls to say to others what happened, so kudos for that.

I have bought a few items that were not as described and returned where the sellers had 100% feedback but, never scammed as in this case. While I agree victim blaming isn't great but qz3fwd's comment is right and intitled to their opinion, liked or not.
This seller scammed and has managed to keep his/her feedback clean on eBay. You shouldn't base trust on eBay feedback though, this is not always a good indicator and can be very deceiving and some sellers are just skating on the edge with their "clean" rating's
Also, something important to bare in mind, eBay will sometimes remove negative feedback if the seller complains, even if the feedback was none offensive and factual.

There was a guy who took money from a well-known collector but never shipped the item. Then, he listed the same item again, and I—completely unaware of the situation—won the auction and paid for it.
The good news is, the item was actually sent to me.
The bad news is, the well-known collector suspected I was part of the scam.

My name is Alex, I’m from Romania, and unfortunately, I’ve become a victim of this person, Mimmo Sarcona.
On August 26th, I ordered two PCs from him (a Voodoo 5 and a Voodoo 2 SLI) and transferred around €1,900.
He kept me updated regularly about the supposed shipping - talking about packing, protection, etc. Everything seemed perfect at first.
However, yesterday evening I realized I was scammed when the shipping info showed the package arriving in a town in Italy. After searching for his username, I found this topic and realized the truth. I was very disappointed in myself for being so naive and not protecting myself better.
I have already emailed him, letting him know I will escalate this to the police. I have proof of the transfer (bank account details, payment confirmation, and his written confirmation that he received the money).
If he does not respond within 7 days, I will file a police report and pursue this further through the proper channels.
My advice:
Stay away from this person!

Im very sorry to hear that.. File right now, dont wait, sorry to say it but that MF won’t reply you 100%. I tried contacting different ways
I have his bank details and proof of payment, so it will be straightforward for the police to identify him. I’m prepared to escalate this through the proper legal channels.

I don't wanna say anything bad, aaronkatrini, but it's pity that you know all the info about this guy and have his hardware which he gives you for repair (as you said) and you just can't help us by SIEZING his hardware till he refunds to victims.
While I understand your frustrations, really I do, but may be @aaronkatrini doesn't want to get involved in such disputes for whatever reason/s, and it's not good to call him out for not doing so.
As i said, i don't want say anything bad about him, he is a good guy, at least he tried to help me out and i do understand him. Just sometimes there is a place for exceptions.
