Hi all,

What file is responsible for the OS version number on the boot screen with the disk being inserted? I have all the latest OS 3.9 files and modules, and it boots as OS 3.9 yet the boot screen still shows 3.1  It used to say 3.9 when I only had Boing Bag 2 installed.

The purple "begging" screen? That's the Kickstart revision. 3.1 for 16-bit Amigas will be 40.063 and 3.1 for 32-bit Amigas is 40.068*.

If you have a custom 3.9 ROM, you may find a higher number printed there.

*Except the A4000T, which is 40.070. The Amiga 3000 is definitely 40.068, not 40.063. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Isn't that the Kickstart Version number?

Or am I misunderstanding your question...

(Beat me to it............. :D )

AndyLandy is spot on with what I'm meaning. Mine shows up as OS 3.1 even though I have OS 3.9 installed with all the updates from Boing Bag 1-4 installed in the Deneb flash rom.

I don't know much about the Deneb's flash ROM. Does it actually allow you to replace Kickstart entirely, or is it just a fast place to store .device files and similar? You may have to do something specific to set it up as a Kickstart 3.9.

You can dump everything in there like a big 4mb ROM. No need for OS 3.9 reboots or LoadModule etc.

I figured it out. It's all about what exec.library you are using that displays the kickstart version. I was using Cosmos' exec.library 45.25 and it shows up as a 3.1 ROM while if I used the Boing Bag exec.library 45.20 it shows up as a 3.9 ROM

Storm is right.

Exec.library is responsible for what is displayed in the Kickstart boot screen.
You can hex edit it easily and burn it to a custom ROM :)

I tried to hex edit exec.library 44.25, but everything refers to 3.9 ROM even though it still says 3.1 ROM. Weird!

The only version I know 44.x is Piru's exec.
Cosmos has version 45.25 which is certainly based on 3.9 ROM (if you check the hex info you'll see it's 3.9.1 and nowhere in the file it's related to 3.1

Yeah I know, I only found the 3.9.1 reference too but when used the boot screen shows 3.1 ROM version 40.057 which I find strange. That was a typo with regards to 44.25, it should have read 45.25.

How do you load Cosmos exec?
Burned into real Eprom? Loaded via Deneb? Another version of loading this module?

That's why it shows the 3.1 :)
Probably because the actual ROM is 3.1 itself and only the kickstart version changes

Hmmm okay. It's just when I use 45.20 exec it shows up correctly as 3.9 ROM using the Deneb. Very interesting.

LOL Amiga is full of surprises! Nice observation though haha
