What if the board was done in an ITX format with PS2 connection for a keyboard?

Could have an internal expansion connector where the TC could be installed and leave the regular slot open for other cartridges. The only problem here is how to handle the VGA and other ports inside the case.

What does this hypothetical question tries to prove?

What this hypothetical questions try to proves is that it is better that it does exists than to have never been exist.

@Roy Not necesarilly, especially in the case of my example where the widow/widower is sick to the high teeth with bits of stupid computer left about the house. It's a relief to be rid!

(drama intended for laughs)

Next week, Children, Nick will show us how to nail jelly to the ceiling, followed by explaining how Schroedinger's Cat can be in the box, not in the box and have never existed, all at the same time!

Given a sufficiently high value of h (Planck's constant) a cat would behave in a quantum way and as such would be be distributed all over as a wave until a detection (interaction) event happened, same goes for the box, so the cat would indeed be both in the box and not in the box. Also, as the notion/concept of existence by definition assumes a suitable observer, and observation by definition assumes interaction, and there's a certain probability the cat would not interact with any other object in any finite timeframe, the cat may have for all practical purposes never existed.
Fairly simple and straightforward

Nailing jelly to the ceiling though - that's a puzzler :p

That's true of many things in the world. By creating this board, people can choose to either buy it or not. An additional option exists for C-64 users that didn't before. But the judgement call isn't on the value of this item in isolation. It's also the opportunity cost of something better that Jens could have designed instead.

Perhaps an interesting way to look at this would be from the inverse -

Say we have a target price of €No-price-driving-please... our product is a fully compatible C64 motherboard - what other features would we include ?

Starting with a 1:1 direct replacement and go from there - what features would you include ?

Some features I would include would be:
I'd sell it as a complete unit in a custom case that's designed to resemble, but not clone the old machines (not forgetting C64GS)

  • HDMi socket
  • Reset button
  • Some games
  • Box with cheap yet nice cover-art (giving some poor art student his/her first big break)

...and the best bit. A wiimote interface + free wiimote! Yes! Use your wiimote on your C64!

Here's one thing I meant to say earlier in this thread, Can all posters remember this please?
"Opinions are like bum holes; everyone's got one and you maybe don't want to be rubbing yours in someone else's face!"

I think that covers what I needed to say nicely. :)

I've got another one:
If a bear farts in the woods, but Merlin isn't there to smell it...

(ok I think I've gone enough off topic for a while)

@ Retrograde

What is an occasional table, the rest of the time, when it's not a table?
How is it that all taxi drivers know where "Home.." is when you're blind drunk?
What came first, the chicken or the egg?

We demand answers, dammit!

Okay peeps.... lets try and get this back on topic ;)

For some this product is a god send and an answer for their Retro 64 problems.
For some this product is a very expensive abhorrent idea dressed up as possible solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
For others its just an expensive C64 power supply.

For the same target price I am imagining what I could reasonably buy in the C64 / C128 scene, sadly the C64 Reloaded doesn't fair all that well with what is available in today's market for its suggested RRP.

So for the fellow Retro head whom is getting into the Commodore 8bit scene, my advice would be this, have a look locally at what is on offer and don't forget eBay and other local auctions as well.

Agreed Keith - For the price of C64 Reloaded you could on a good day get a C128, 1541 II OR SD2IEC with an Easy Flash Cartridge :) (My main set-up by the way ;-) ) but we should not knock anybody who is trying to bring new products not only to the 64 scene but all retro scene machines, we should be encouraging them :-)

This is exactly the type of thing I would waste my hard earned money on. I have plenty of donor boards to take the required components from (rest assured the original board would be still kept and cherished). The bug fix doesn't bother me either way, however moving to a newer power supply does. I live in the constant (well documented) fear that eventually my original PSU will kill my c64. Also, as weak as the advantage sounds about carrying a lighter supply, I am sold on a much smaller lightweight PSU. The fact I am using REAL commodore IC's makes me feel much better, I hate the thought of FPGA devices like the Chameleon.

Howeverrrrrrrrrr

I think I must own every possible peripheral both new and old, will they work as expected? Have they all been thoroughly tested by individual computers? Can I expect support from IC to get these working?, will the manufacturers of my peripherals (those that still exist) support their products on the new boards? Hmmmmmmmm. Not saying they won't, but surely he's changed something's around on his board that MAY cause issues.

mad props to Jens for doing it though, great idea for a hobby project but commercially I think it will be a support nightmare for him.

What would we REALLY like to have seen in place of this product?
for me it would be a new, SAFE, power supply to replace the lump of plastic we all use today.
