Computers you would like to shoot.

That's my problem though, I come into these companies that claim the setup has never worked properly since it was installed.

Stand alone xp boxes on engineering sites I approve of though. stable as hell.

Just once they're on a domain and had about 20-30 different users logon at different times in its life they grind to a halt as xp doesn't clear away the old profiles unless you add stupid script on logoff. Then you get the problem of having to do roaming profiles, which never works properly on xp, then that adds to another problem, all in the name of trying to get a logon speed that doesn't require the user to phone a friend to switch the pc on for them before they get to work :D

The main reason for not upgrading, is they once had an IT budget. The company never thought 7-8 years down the oad that their staffs needs would change, which they have drastically changed in the 10 years I've been supporting the setups.

Any box with the word Dell on it needs to be shot and buried! Crap proprietary components, crippled bios, and shoddy build quality.

Yes to their desktop/workstation boxes. Their PowerEdge servers are actually pretty damn reliable, I'm certainly a big fan.

The Power Mac 8100, the 8500 and 9500.. Those cases well were hand cutting nightmares.. iMac G3's with the brittle plastic, failing PAV boards.. and well if you tore one apart and one screw dropped down into the screen area, you spent the better part of a day tearing it apart to get the screw out..

Spindler Era macs, look at them funny and they crack.

I'm past the strong feelings I had against PC's and Macs at the time.

So instead I'm going to tell you this true story from a short time back:
Manager: Enough is enough, that unstable server must be dealt with
Tech guy: I know, but I think drastic measures are needed in this case.
Manager: I give you carte blanche. What ever you neeed to get the situation sorted. Go out at buy it!
Tech guy: Thanks, I'm on it!

An hour or so passes, and the tech guy returns to the server room...

:butcher
...with an axe, et Voila; the troublesome server was no more.

The tech guy went on and had a brilliant career, it's the stuff legends are made of.

which goes to my current point. Atm, it's more stupid software or what stupid people have done with machines which can get me worked up.

I wish I was that tech guy with an axe some days, if I was him I'd frame that axe in a glass door cabinet and hang it over my desk; as a trophy and warning to future generations - You better not screw up our servers! :)

Speaking of that...
Wow.. I just remembered the early Dell (desktops) we set up at the School District (this goes back a bit), and I was getting the worst cuts from those cases!! Grrrrr....

I did love the Dell Poweredge servers tho..
'cept for those early PERC cards.. Had several RAID failures (or the occasional "the storage is missing" instances, but those would just take a reboot) from some of the early BIOS versions..

I remember a funny (from some perspectives) event when one of our techs was upgrading the Netware on one of the poweredge servers. We had done about 3 already, but this tech hadn't, so he had the guy who had done the others help him. All looked good.
We rebooted....
No BOOTABLE volumes found.
I remember the tech who had done this before said, calm as ever, "Hmmm... Haven't seen that message before." ;-)

Call into Dell, "yeah, we've seen that and there should be a BIOS fix out soon. It almost never does that.." :-)

One rebuild and restore later and we were good..

I'll second or third Atari 16-bit comps(!)

Imo they had nothing or did nothing better than their Amiga counterpart (sure they had MIDI built-in but I don't create music so don't care). From what I recall they were a mess of incompatability between models too, not that other home computers of the era didn't have that problem but Ataris seemed to take it a step furter.

Custom, distributed system with specialized chips = smart, cool
Systems without or just half-assed = not so much

Really? I used some new machines (well it was in 2007/8) and they where pretty excellent. Pre 2004 ones I would agree.

When it compes to PC manufacures it has to be e-Machines. My god the fail ratio on them was beyond funny. So far beyond it's almost funny.

I've changed my mind my A2000 has been given its last supper..

or rather the GVP scsi card and scsi drive..

they will be shot at dawn!

Well, my Acer Travelmate 8006lmi would probably be worth a bullet since it was a POS.

That people want to shoot anything apple is strange. They are known to be one the most reliable brands in the marked. I have never had any trouble with mine. my macbook pro was a great upgrade from the twice as expensive acer.

You can pick any from any era but only one!

Which make / model would you like to see trembling in your gun scope / flame thrower / rpg.

Or your weapon of choice.

My first choice would be... Erm

Any Amiga or pc equiped with a scsi hard drive!!

There I said it!

- right no more posts from me now -

I hope that's only because SCSI is a "fail" for you. ;)
An Amiga isn't an Amiga if it hasn't got SCSI.

The only computer I would love to shoot is any brand of Atari.
Bill Gates qualifies too, but he isn't even human, let alone a computer.

You obviously never used an old Mac with only 1 floppy drive. ;-)

I don't think any computer line/company has been so good that none of their products might inspire rage..

I do generally agree that Apple makes pretty solid/stable products.
But I've seen enough Sad Mac's in my day to know that even they can enrage the little Bruce Banner inside all of us... ;-)

modern imacs are fine but the later G5 ppc range had big issues with poor solder / board warp on the graphic cards (as do xbox /ps3) many, many iMacs & ibooks die because of this, I've seen dozens.

the early macs had the floppy shuffle , constantly asking for a disk change!

its bad enough on the Amiga ..insert disk in to DF0: (why not DF1 or 2 ???)

It depends. Apple generally does provide quality hardware, yes, but they have a tendency to have individual models every now and again that are just utter, complete turds, like the Performa 5200/6200 - a terrible, terrible board design that crippled the entire thing right out of the gate, an ugly case, and some kind of really poor power supply, such that the three that I owned (got 'em free, thankfully) were outlasted by computers older than I am.

When my old speccy used to end a 5 minute load with,

R - Tape loading error

I used to stroll downstairs and get myself a glass of water. Take a sip and stroll back upstairs again. I would then carefully place the glass next to the speccy, and give it a meaningful look.

I would then load the game again, and it always seemed to work from then on.

I beleive the method of choice would be bludgoning...... slow and with a heavy fortified iron mace....

and the device would be.....

anything with the letter "i" in front of its name..... so thats "iMAC", "iPhone" and "iPAD".... infact I may have to spend a little extra time on the last model to ensure its filth and distain on the world had been put to rights.

once the world is rid of these stupidly names "i" devices.... its then onto the Nintendo Wii's..... I wont be taking any prisoners..... there wont be any jury..... no judge..... just instant punishment..... for the mockery of a product that it is!!!

... ahem.....

No bludgoning with heavy blunt objects here, I hope. :D
