Whilst I'm obsessed with everything Amiga, I strive to try and remain sensible.

I've decided to limit my collection to machines originally aimed at the home user market - I currently own an A500, A500+ and an A1200 (I also have an A2000 which I'm attempting to save from battery damage and hope to release back into the wild)

Each time I buy an Amiga I feel compelled to purchase add-ons, I have an HD8+, ACARD AEC-7720UW, A570, 1230 MK IV, INDI 1200 MKII, 2 x 4GB CF, SCSI CD ROM, Squirrel, etc, etc....

The point is I'm trying to cover all bases to have the ability to play all OCS, ECS & AGA games without spending more on this passion than I did on my house!

I'm interested to see if anyone can present a valid argument for buying an A600, can it do anything that my other Amigas can't?

Hoping to get my hands on a Zeus68K one day :)

your other amiga's are not as cute as the A600 is. I have a a1200 with some addons, but i was tempted to buy the a600 as well. You can get easy upgrades that are still in stock, like the vampire card or something from individual computers, with indi ecs and a CF card.

i really can't figure out a sensible reason for having the a600 in addition to the ones you already have. but you should. when you have it, you understand ;)

Can you easily throw your other Amiga's in the boot and take it with you on holidays?

Can you spin your other Amigas on your finger like pizza dough?

Do you need a small ECS Amiga that is not wider than a 15inches LCD screen?

If you are looking for a genuine miggy, loaded with WHDLoad games, that can fit in your backpack for the summer vacations at your grandma's cottage, then maybe, you need an A600 :)

If you think about it - your statement really should answer your question as to buying the 600 or not :D

But, a little more seriously - it is in trying work out what is the best combination, that it can all become a bit confusing, expensive, inconclusive, a decision based on what you can actually buy, room to have it all and so many other factors...

I gaurantee every member here with have a different answer to your "problem" - gauran-freakin'-t it! I personally have about 3 different answers to this each week

A600
some pro's

Built in IDE
built in pcmcia
small size
more 3rd party support, usb, accelerator's, indivision etc

cons
usually require caps replaced and can loose video quality and or sound.
no numeric keypad (was issue for me for changing views F18 Interceptor) some games mainly simulation games used keypad
Keyboards not as robust as A500/A1200 and sometimes required repair / replacement
some joysticks would not plug in (port recessed)

I've missed some but thats what i can remember.

Just yes!

Bought my first one last month after only using an A1200, great little must have and lots of goodies to add to it,small and beautifully formed

A600 is my favorite miggy, as it is more compatible than 1200, and more compact than A500 or A1200. You wont get AGA, but since most of the games are OCS and ECS, this is not so much a disadvantage imho.
Whenever i want to play with friends, A600 is the choice to make.:drinkin:

Having A600 there is no reason to have any other ECS machine like A500+, A2k, A3k. With standard upgrades like A604 and Indivision ECS the only missing then is some of the currently available accelerators (Furia, Zeus, ACA). It has IDE, PCMCIA, it is very compact and light. A600 is coolest Amiga ever ;o)

No brainer, get an A600.
Its sort of wife friendly, as she only gets half mad when she stubs her toe on it.

its personal choice really,i dont really like the 600.lack of number pad etc.

but,my wife has one and loves it.with 4 gig cf card as a harddrive 3.1 kickstart 4mb of fastram and 2mb chipram and her own monitor.

its what you want that matters as you will be the one using it.

lack of number pad etc.
I dont remember when I used num pad last time on my A1200 or A4000. I dont consider missing key pad as CONS but as PLUS ;o)

Does you notebook have num pad? Or do you buy models with 17" screen for num keys?

i suppose it depends on what you use the machine for when it comes to the num pad.so yes it would be a personal issue if its not there.:)

and yes,my laptop has a 17" screen and num pad.

given the choice of A600 or A500+ i think i would go for an A600, but if i had a A500+ and one of those HDD adapters, unless i was worried about space id just stick with the 500+

One of the deciding factors on finally selling my 600 was the lack of AGA. Some of my favourite games are AGA, and whilst I loved my 600 to bits for it's portability and reliability, the 1200 was just getting so much more use.
It is a great little machine, and I would definitely chose one over a 500 or derivative, mainly because of it's built in IDE, PCMCIA slot, and now it has a relatively affordable upgrade path with the 8MB expansions, Indi ECS etc compared to the sometimes expensive and bulky 500 expansions.
If you have a 1200, and unless you are planning on taking it out and about with you quite a bit, there no real point in my mind.
If, however, you are looking for a slightly more affordable entry system and don't want a bulky 500 and associated restrictions, then I would say go for it.

I have my original A500+ and recently acquired 600 and 1200.

The 1200 gets the most use because accelerators are easy to get, its got IDE for the Hard drive/CD, PCMCIA for easy file transfer and its got AGA.

The 600 is a nice compact machine but for an all rounder, the 1200 edges it.

My personal advice is unless you need the compactness of the A600, I'd just get an A1200 and be done with.

My long-term goal is to settle on my A1200/030 and my A3000/040. I don't really even need the A3000, but there's too much history for me to part with her now.

I've got a fair few other miggies about the place, I just need to get round to getting rid of them.

Some folks like to have different models, some like the collection aspect and want one of everything. Some just want a single, fully-pimped out tower Amiga.

The best advice I can give you is Zetr0's: "Find meaning for your machines." My A1200 lives under the TV for retro gaming, and my A3000 lives in the mancave where I use it for MOD tracking. Both Amigas have a function that they fulfil for me, so I keep them.

I so wish I could find permantent setup space for my A1200 and C64. Having to pull them out for use just means they don't get much.

Thanks to all for the kind replies :)

I'm trying to talk myself out of spending heaps more money, but the general consensus seems to be just get one!

I can see myself doing this possibly, likely through want rather than need

I did forget to mention, I do have a 4MB Minimig with ARM - not a real Miggy I know, but a great bit of kit nonetheless. That covers the portability aspect....

I guess this doesn't sway anyone's pro 600 argument though? I'm on the wrong forum if I want to be talked out of buying an Amiga :D
