as topic says do you have to have HD video or does standard do you instead ?

I ran into a topic on my facebook page where it seemed to me one of the people has to have HD video or he will not watch it.

Now to me I really dont care about HD in anything be it games or video. As long as I can watch the video and it is of standard quality I am happy with it.

Just wanted to know what your feelings are about it

It depends on your LCDTV. Cheap sets, especially coupled with Freeview the SD looks terrible.

If you have a Plasma then SD tends to look acceptable. Especially if the source is 576i or 288p h264. The scene switch from XVID to h264 has made SD downloads look much better. And if you plan on archiving (keeping) your downloads you need 1/4 the space of 720p

However I've just switched to 720p as a minimum resolution for all my *backups* and acquired a 4th 2TB drive :)

If the same show is on Freeview HD I'll watch the HD version.

I only have CRTs in my home, cause I like the picture they display over any of them modern flat "thinggies" anytime. So I don't care about HD either };-{P

I honestly can't stand SD any more, unless it's a no choice kind of thing. Wether it's 720 or 1080 doesn't bother me much in most cases though.

I go for SD in most cases. I do have lcd monitors that can do HD, but don't see the value unless it is film. and if it is film I'm going to watch it on the TV anyway, which is SD. ;)

I have a feeling i'll jump straight over the HD phase. And onto "superhd", or whatever they'll call 4k

I mean, my sd tv will do for another 2-3 years.

I never watch tv per say, only series or movies - all in HD. I think it's about what you're used to. Can't go back now :)

It depends on the size if your tv. Any set under 32" is not going to be able to do hd any justice, and you really need 40"+ to get the most from it.

I can instantly see the difference, and to me most broadcast sd looks horrible these days due to digital compression and led upscaling, as the image is processed twice.

With the new 4k hd you won't really benefit from the resolution under 50", which a lot of front roms really can't handle properly.

Although I like HD nowadays, the big leap was from VHS to DVD (from analog to digital). After that, not so significant changes (on the eye of course) for daily normal use.

I enjoy watching full hd blu rays on a plasma tv, I don´t like regular SD on it too much...

But then again I also love watching videos on sd2snes and videocds on cd32 with a crt tv. What does that make me, friend of extremes maybe :)

I'll watch whatever is available I really don't care as long as it is good quality. 240p on youtube is boooooo tho!

I can even tell the difference between SD and HD, Discovery was in both as an SD channel and HD channel a year ago, the difference was very visable with Storm Chasers.

Cleary Blu-Ray, which I also have, is really the big difference, I have the Underworld Trilogy on DVD and Blu-Ray, and Kate just looks better :-D

And I watch on my 26" T260 Samsung LCD, I just don't have room for a big screen.

I wouldn't say i care about HD as i'll watch anything as long as its a decent enough picture however saying that if the same program is on an SD and a HD channel i will watch the HD version.

I was like you until I looked at the latest Panasonic Plasma's. Their SD picture quality is comparable with a CRT. 99% of all other sets I looked at. (LED, LCD etc.) all looked HORRIBLE with SD due to the higher resolution and lower colour depth.

we have a 6 yrs old 42" samsung lcd very good blacks and very clear. it was the wife that really noticed,

We have Finding Nemo on DVD for the boy but also recorded it off sky, now sky is only 720p but the Wife said "WOW look at Nemo how much clearer it is" and thats saying something :)

Not really. I'll take it if it's available, but I expect online videos to be crappy quality anyway, so it doesn't matter.

As for movie-watching, I don't give a crap. DVD is good enough, and doesn't require me to buy a new TV. I'd much rather that Blu-Ray have spent all that disc capacity on higher-quality, ideally lossless compression instead of pumping up the resolution with the same old icky MPEG-2, but I guess that wouldn't have sold a bunch of expensive new jumbotrons to people who think it really makes a difference whether they can see the pores on Robert Downey Jr.'s nose.

i use sd/720p on my 720p 37in bedroom tv for my tv shows from america scifi and stuff

but watch 720p/1080p on my tv downstairs on my 37in 1080p tv
mainly blueray from my mediacenter or hd films

I always prefer to watch video in HD these days as everything else just looks (and sometimes even sounds) crap in comparison. I can still watch videos in SD if i have to though (like many of those old classic kung-fu movies that never got released on Blu-ray or even DVD!).

Why settle for anything less than HD (720p or 1080p) if you've shelled out on HD capable equipment?

Most things we watch are SD on my 42" plasma. But it looks absolutely fine to me. I do enjoy gaming and movies in HD though when I get the chance, but TBH it makes no difference to me whatsoever, I won't go out of my way to watch something in HD, plus I'm not paying Sky extra for the same content just at a "better" quality.

I don't care about SD vs HD (well not yet, anyway).
I watch anything put in front of me.

For streaming over the internet, my connection is too expensive and isn't reliable enough for HD video.

My old banger PC (AMD Barton 3000, 1GB ram, GeForce 4 64MB) can't handle high def video anyway.

For me, if there is a deciding factor, I will choose a progressive scan signal over and interlaced one every time. Even if that means watching at a lower resolution.

I have a feeling i'll jump straight over the HD phase. And onto "superhd", or whatever they'll call 4k.

The jump from HD to 4k is as large as the jump between SD and HD. You will see a *huge* difference on large TVs.

The thing about 4K is that it allows fewer cameras to cover a live game. So you can have the entire football field in view on your TV, and yet the 4x increase in resolution will allow you to identify individual player as if you are watching from the stands. For sports 4K will positively kick ass.
