Hello All

Ive been wanting to play around with designs for cases... and other metal work

Am looking for some suggestions for DXF editor, something I can design plans on, send DXF files off and receive cut out metal sheets.

Ive tried so far:

CAMBAM - have to pay for it, happy to do so but looking for a free alternative
INKSCAPE - Tried it, no idea, its just a mystery what this program is, is it an art program, a cad program

SO am after anyones suggestions on a free DXF editor, its quite important that I can specify the size shape of objects (mm) as when I tried inkscape it just didn't stand out as obvious.

Thanks All

just tried that, it seems a very heavy 3D cad program, am after a 2D top down, also the learning curve just to draw a rectangle took me the best part of an hour.

Yes, you will need to put in some effort...

Have a look at OpenSCAD, it's also free: http://www.openscad.org/

1) command: cube([30,40,20]); -> will draw a cube 30x40x20mm
2) export it as a STL file
3) import it in FreeCAD and export it as an DXF file

I use Fusion 360 - it's free and very intuitive, plus it has a community and Autodesk to support it. It has a sheet metal modeller, plus a direct-to-print 3D printing and CAM (for machining) functions.

I love it. :)
