I've been buying electronics parts from China for years via Ebay, AliExpress or even direct. Usually if one looks carefully at the seller, and the listing, (and maybe send a few questions before buying) the risky purchases can be filtered out quite well. However recently I see bunch of new(ish) sellers on Ebay (with a few thousand ratings, maybe max 2-3 years old accounts) with relatively OK ratings, listing the same parts for almost the same price (using the same pictures and descriptions). I suspect they either copy each other's listings or/and they are the same seller with split accounts.

Recently I've bought a relatively expensive (by Chinese standards anyway) part from two of these different sellers - one from each -, and both turned out to be counterfeit re-labelled parts. What is interesting that both parts were identical, packed EXACTLY the same way (same foam, same tape, same box) but came from different addresses, so I'm assuming they are dropship sellers with no stock, they don't know what they are selling, and dropshipping from the same supplier.

So I just sent an Ebay message first - trying to resolve the issue, then I started a case, as they really didn't have ANY idea how to deal with the problem, sending angry and aggressive, garbage mails from the start, instead of trying to sort it. So in the end (after a month dragging though) I've got my refund via a PayPal claim (executed by PayPal not the seller) and gave them negative feedback to warn others. Now, being a seller too I do not dole out negative feedback lightly but I really thought in these cases it had to be done. The sad (on their end) part is, it's possible that they did not know they are selling counterfeit parts as they were dropshipping, but if they have communicated properly, (instead of sending insults and accusations from the start) sent an orderly return info, orderly refund, I might have believed them.

Just to illustrate the level of communication. This is just the last one - I had like 5-10 of these none of them really any useful. But it's good to know that his "friends will pull the black me" so I can mentally prepare :D

Me: I'm sorry, but I don't have time for this nonsense anymore. You have sold me a counterfeit product, it's a fact. The PayPal claim is closed, you can check it for status, photos, tracking etc. The rest I don't care.

Seller: Are you crazy? We did not receive your refund to the items before you do not receive our goods, you say our goods are fake, you're a liar, we have told our friends ask them to pull the black you, no one is willing to cooperate with you, your approach is very bad, no one likes you, to be honest, to seek truth from facts, before the delivery, we have told you this item as our ebay pictures, and you agreed to accept this item, why do we say that our items are fake, what are your proof? Believe even God will punish you , our goods as our ebay pictures, you know the malicious bad comments to us, how much impact do? Now you have your money back, why give us negative feedback, so your approach is very bad, also the loss of the expensive shipping costs, and you have maliciously given negative feedback, do you think your approach is right? You take someone else's picture that we have a problem with the goods, you are a big liar, no one will be willing to cooperate with you, because you do not do business, and your approach is very malicious, please correct the bad comments, immediately!

Lesson is to really look even CLOSER when buying parts from China..

"you are a liar, and nobody likes you, and god will punish you...........now, please retract your negative feedback..."

Actually I can't even if I wanted to (and I don't) . EBay doesn't allow changing feedback. Plus what if his friends already "pulled the black me"? Pointless :D

just out of interest if you get a fake do they actually do anything?? or are they just paperweights

It varies a lot, sometimes they could be completely DOA, or having a completely different logic inside. But more common is package surface manipulation, i.e. reprinted markings where the component inside is a cheaper/slower/smaller variant of the type that is printed on it - happens with programmable logic chips, memory chips, micro controllers, CPUs etc.. Typically risky are parts out of production but having a high(ish) retail price threshold like over 10USD per part, and sold in quantity, obviously making the counterfeiting process commercially viable.

Good to know, thanks for the heads up, as I'm looking at possibly ordering some C64 chips myself, once I get my third rig tested.
Just starts with black screen after about 6 weeks of use, using the same power supplies etc as the working ones are running off with no apparent issues, so I'm going to see what a dead test cartridge can come up with. SID is also OK since it performs in the other machines, I am guessing PLA or VIC for now but we will see.

I just hope you will avoid the Wrath of God tbtorro, for the sin of giving correct feedback. :D

The worst are the ones that say they are in the UK, and you can only tell they are in China by the VAT information.

Ordered a Bunch of AM27C400 from a local Swedish page, it came from china, just in a plain plastic ziplock bag...

none of them erazed properly, turns out they where all AM27C4096's so now I need to design a reverse of the adapter you use on an tl866+ :p

Just about all logic chips you buy on eBay from China are fakes.

If you order 74LS logic chips what you'll get is really 74HC that have been rebranded and the logic threshold is different. This will cause massive problems if you use them in VIC-20 or C64/C128 computers.

The logic threshold for real 74LS chips is 1.5V but it is 2.5V for 74HC.

eBay's feedback system is corrupt. All the seller has to do is make a complaint and it will be removed. I have seen this happen many times.
