Here's a great interview with Robert Bernardo about the FE3. :)

And here's a video by mjnurney of AmiBay that goes into more detail on the device.

Thanks for the wonderful videos guys!

After a lenghty stay in customs I finally received the package and although I have not assembled it yet, the kit looks great. The timing is also good since I just brought my VIC20 back to life and now it needs a companion. :)

FB incoming.

Feedback left for you as well. I'm glad they finally released it!

I still have kits and fully assembled devices available.

Got it assembled (was an easy and nice build) and it just worked immediately:

Did a quick test of most of the features and it looks like a great little expansion for this little machine. :)

This VIC-20 was just brought back to life but since I plan on doing the s-video mod on it, it will stay case-less for a little while longer..

Looks great! I'm glad you enjoyed the build. It's always nice seeing a VIC resurrected as well!

Black Friday/Cyber Monday pricing through November 27. $10 off fully assembled units.

I have stock of both fully assembled devices and kits available for immediate shipment!

I've also worked with COREi64 to get some of his wonderful cases to sell along with the Final Expansion 3! Now you can order the device or kit along with a case instead of ordering them from two locations. I have a limited supply of cases and colors so please contact me to find out which I have.

I have one black case available that was printed in standard resolution print quality for $25.

All the other cases I have are high resolution print quality and cost $35.

For now, I'm only selling these cases when you order a FE3. Let me know if you want just a case and I'll see if I can work something out with COREi64.

Thanks!

I'm interested.

Is it possible to se the Vic 20 screen with 512Kb (blocks free) available and visible?

Another question:
Has the cartridge some software built inside? (example as the Penultimate Cartridge)

Thanks
A.

The VIC-20 has to use paging to access all 512K of RAM in the Final Expansion 3. As such, it will never show all the memory. You can pick the memory configuration from the menu when you turn on the VIC-20. The highest standard memory configuration shows 28159 Bytes Free. You should check out the memory sections of the User Manual:

http://jvaltane.kapsi.fi/vic20/fe/VIC-20 Final Expansion User Manual.pdf

I ship the cartridge with a bunch of programs by Jeff Daniels, who runs the Denial VIC-20 web site, programmed on the cartridge. I can send you one without anything pre-programmed on the ROM so you can add your own programs. There's a collection of most of the games available on the Zimmers site that is already configured to use in the FE3's SD2IEC. Once you have them on the SD card, you can put it into the FE3 then flash the games you want to the FE3's ROM. After that, you don't need a SD card to run any of the games you flashed.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I'm so glad the kit arrived safely! Be sure to let me know if you have any questions. Sorry about the issue with the images on the assembly page going away. They should be back now. I'll be going through important old posts to fix them as well.

After first testing out the cart I had some issues with it but didn't have much time to dig into it, but this morning I took another go at it and can not figure out how it is supposed to work. It doesn't seem to do what I expect, so the question is whether I am doing something wrong?

I get the FE3 menu when I start the machine but if I try to open the disk loader menu, I see a very quick message saying 'NOT FOUND,0,0' and then it jumps back to the main menu. I have a 4GB SD card inserted with a single partition containing a single D64 file.
If I type LOAD"$",8 it loads the index and it shows the .d64 file that I put on it. So how come the disk loader menu doesn't work?

Another weird issue - if I select BASIC with FE3 wedge, the @, $ etc. commands do nothing (no error is returned either). If I choose the normal BASIC, they do work. I have installed an S-JiffyDOS ROM, so perhaps there is a conflict here since that ROM also uses those wedge commands? But that shouldn't be any different from the normal JiffyDOS which is supposed to work as far as I gather.

Anyone who got around to using it can provide some tips?

The VIC-20 has many different memory configurations for software and those memory locations can change based amount of memory selected. Some programs also require an exact memory configuration to work properly. Because of this, the Disk Loader is not just a file browser. Instead, it uses LOADER files that you create that contain the file you want to run, the memory configuration, and the start command for the program. You can create these files manually but the better way to create them is using a software application called MKLoader.

http://sleepingelephant.com/ipw-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=7324

MKLoader will scan your SD card and create what it thinks is the proper configuration for all of the programs on your card. Even if it doesn't work with every program, it will do most of the hard work then you can edit the file to make any changes needed for it to work properly. Without a LOADER file on your SD card, the Disk Loader does what you are experiencing. Full documentation for the LOADER files is in the user guide.

As for the FE3 Wedge, are you pressing F7 from the main menu? Press F7 from the main menu after you first turn on your VIC-20. Type @ then press Enter and you should see the current version of the SD2IEC firmware. Usually if you press @, $, etc. and nothing happens, that means that it's not communicating with the SD2IEC. Make sure the disk drive cable between the VIC-20 and the FE3 is good then try again.

Let me know how it goes.
