Hi, my names Neil, I was directed here by some mebers from a facebook group saying this was the best site for Amiga info. I found an a3000 at a bootsale this week, it came complete with keyboard and 2 boxes that the seller said were genlocks. What are genlocks and what do they do? The ones I have look home made, also have tested the unit and it powers up to workbench so seems to be working ok, whats a rough value on a working a3000 and the genlocks? Thanks

A genlock was used for video capture and your machine may have been used for video editing and titling in the past. What software has been installed on the hard drive (I asume that it has a hard drive as it boots to Workbench)?

As for price, we don't offer guidance on that subject here as it's considered to be what we call 'price driving'. You need to turn detective to search on here and other sites to get an idea of a price. Basically, the price ends up being what you are prepared to accept and that a buyer is prepared to pay.

Great thanks. I don't really know my way around amigas, how would I check what else is installed on the hd?

I think it would be a good idea to make some pictures in daylight and remove the four screws (two on each side) and slide off the top cover and make some shots on the inside and the motherboard.. we can't comment on prices here.. something with side rules and stuff.. but I am sure someone would trade his new in a box PlayStation 4 for it..

First thing, pop the cover and check the battery. If the original NiCd battery is still in place you want to get removed de-soldered or cut off carefully ASAP. Check the guides around the net. If there is any leakage from the battery you want to get it neutralised and cleaned as soon as possible as well.

So many A3000s are damaged by these leaking on-board NiCd batteries it would be a shame to see another one go!

Then you can think about keeping or reselling it :)

I'll second the idea to check the battery. More good A3000s have been killed by leaking batteries than any other model.
I this area, an A3000 would never be worth what a PS4 would bring, unless it has significant upgrades, and is in like new condition. Many people are afraid of the 3000, because of the battery issues. Shame, because it's a nice machine.
