Is anyone playing Guild Wars 2?

I had originally intended playing this on release, as I had been a huge fan of the original, playing it for hundreds of hours across all of its expansions, but have had so much else to do that I only started playing it this week. And so far I'm really liking it.

It's definitely less restrictive than the original, with a more true to MMO persistent open world, rather than the original's instanced world with multiplayer hubs. It does however feel like the pacing is much slower as I'm still within the starting area after over an hour and still have much to do, although even this area isn't small, and zooming out of the world map it looks like it will take far longer then the original to transverse and explore most parts.

As the game is set further into the future, compared to the original, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the locations I remember, to see how the wars have changed them.

It's also cool that you can now play as a Charr this time.

However I've initially opted for a new race called the Sylvari that are plant based and entwined with magic, so I've created an Elementalist as my first character, just as I did with the original... and it was my most enjoyable character. I've never been into tank combat character, but the huge Norns do look interesting to create a Warrior or Guardian later. Although the next will probably be a Necromancer as I do love raising the dead!

Got a friend who plays this. He loves it. Might be joining at some point if I can find the funds next year.

It seem to me that it look like RPG game

Big turn off me!

I was going get STARCRAFT 2 but was put off by register battle.net crap and 1 hours installing crap!

@AmiNeo. Don't forget that the game is subscription free, so once you own the game you can play forever without the need to pay any more.

I managed to grab the game for £19.99 from http://www.simplycdkeys.com/guild-wars-2/guild-wars-2, half the price Arena.net are currently asking.

@Amiga Forever. Yes, it's a MMO RPG. Definitely need to be into RPGs to enjoy this. It's always been my favourite genre.

Ive been wanting to try this for a long time,

I loved the 1st one and still login now and then, but based on the fact none of my frineds play this and im still after all this time lvl 16 elem, monk im guessing guild wars 2 would take longer to lvl up. Being a busy family man I cannot invest the hours required.

I have a few lvl 60, 70 and an 80 on world of warcraft
Played eve online for a year or two.
Played knights online a lot, full gear lvl 70 malasia, and 80 usa.
Played conan to lvl 70 priest
Played lord of the rings
Tried all kinds of games but they all require your attention.

Wow for example, I put it down for just 1yr and all my friends have gear that gives them 30k+ hp and what I thought was good gear gets me 14k.

I just cant keep up with what little time I have.

That's why I loved guildwars, play with computer players and put it down when I want. If guildwars 2 let you do the same and just play when you want then ill get it for the questing, pvp I cant keep up anymore to collect the gear required.

Played it from release through february or so.
Was good fun to level and do instances, but PVP was quirky and laggy, and open world PVP was the reason was why I started playing.

Game had some kind of hard cap on chars it rendered, so if it was filled up with your closest allies, then 40 enemies hit you, you didn't see crap until they were right ontop of you and their attacks went off. Not so fun at times.

Maybe they made the design smarter by now, dunno.

Ah yes I forgot about the subscription-less paradigm. Big plus!

@AF It's a bit like Skyrim MMO style, with a little of World of Warcraft (Which I don't like) mixed in.

Exactly the same for me. I hate MMOs that require constant dedication and grinding just to keep up with allies and the most powerful players in the game. I also originally played the first GW for this exact reason as it felt like a standard offline single player RPG, but with multiplayer collaboration.

I've never been into PvP. I played a few guild battles in the original, plus some of the arena matches, but I really didn't enjoy it that much. Much prefer to stick to PvE. And I hate games like WoW that involve general PvP during normal play, because it always ends up with more powerful players picking on the newer ones.

And yes, GW2 is very much the same in this regard. You can just play it at your own pace and not be too bother by the power other players have gained. The biggest difference is that they have scrapped the multiplayer town hubs and instanced world, and gone for a more traditional persistent world where everything is going on together and you see other players as you explore. With instances events. I definitely prefer this approach, because in the original you could feel really isolated at times trying to complete an instanced area with no possibility of help unless you abandoned the current area to attempt to assemble a party to try again.

These were also the reasons I play Star Wars: The Old Republic, as it has a very similar gameplay style, allowing you to quest solo or in groups and just enjoy it as an RPG. No need to play PvP.

I'm the same, I prefer working with players to kick ass vs NPCs. Enjoyed TOR myself for the same reason.

I think ill give it a go then.

so is there no issues like in WOW a higher lvl just pounding on you while you pve ??

Nah the PVE zones are totally separate from each server's PVP areas, don't worry.
Unless there are pure PVP servers - I haven't looked into that.

PS. You could level in the frontiers too of course - there are plenty of mobs, and mass PVP can net good XP if you're on the winning side. ;)

On PVE no one can hurt you. Only mobs of course. You can join other people to play quests together, dungeons, even your personal story. If you go to PVP or to WvW(World versus World, which means Server vs Server) then someone from another server can attack you. I am a big fan of GW2 (but i am only play PvE), now i'm trying to lvl up my second char to buy cool armor and play dungeons! If you want any other info, feel free to ask!
Oh, and the coolest race is Norn :P

There is no monthly subscription, you only pay the game price.

World vs World? I bet that's network heavy

And not only network!
You need a pc with great CPU and GPU power... Imagine 200 human characters on a plain fighting each other!

Totally awesome!!!

Yeah EvE online used to get that way in low sec during raids, but that was all on one huge server cluster.

CPUs on that cluster must have been monsters!

well my spec should be ok (although slower than a desktop)

i7 3630QM
16gb ram
256gb Msata + 750gb Hybrid HDD
Nvidia 680m 4gb
1920x1080 screen.

This Laptop is great, only the sound lets it down no bass that I can hear.

Well my laptop got overheating with GW2, so be careful!

I have a Phenom X3, 4 GB RAM, and 1 GB stand alone GPU (i don't remember chipset). It's above game specs but everytime i launched GW2, it switched off from overheating. Finally i got a laptop base with fans and now it's ok!

hopefully mine will be ok, It's a standard "Clevo" Base but has 2 large fans and I've only ever heard them once or twice while playing Tombraider on max setting and encoding a video. seems to stay very cool.

my sons Dell 1520 , Intel core2duo , 4gb ram, 160gb hdd , 8600GT gets DAMN hot.
I think I need to strip it and apply new paste even though the temps are within saftety its almost too hot underneath to hold your hand on it while my i7 laptop still feels cold.

technology I guess and things move along.

That's one heck of a laptop! What model?

EDIT: Nevermind missed the last post. Very nice spec! Won't need to upgrade that for a while.

I bought the best I could afford, planning on 3-5 yrs out of it before its too slow for whatever gets released in 2018+.
