Hi I am hoping to get some help and support for my Crowdfunding campaign.

Basically I have all the tooling and manufacturing in place to have Amiga-style and other retro inspired modern USB PC keyboards and mice made. So far they include Acorn, Amstrad and Sinclair, I also asked Atari but haven't heard back from them so haven't included the design.

Here is the re-post I put on some Amiga forums, but I hope to get community support from any people interested in any platforms :)

The aim is to produce some very affordable (but still good quality) keyboards and mice that can be used mainly for emulation and with modern systems - but they will also still work via adapters with classic Amiga computers and CD32.

I have already had a prototype made and Mike from Amiga Inc. has initially seemed positive about the project. I also have Acorn brand holders on board (as I also wish to make Acorn, Amstrad and Sinclair style versions too). The reason I need a few platforms is mainly just to factory minimum order quantities.

Anyway I am ready to launch my IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign and even have the pre-launch page and a video to show the product ready!!

BUT I am stuck now in a licensing limbo :(

I've not had final approval from Amiga Inc. despite Mike's positive comments and I am left not knowing if I am actually allowed to start the campaign (I am happy to pay a royalty or use Amiga licensing terms if needed).
Acorn have generously already given me the go ahead, but Sky UK (who own the Amstrad and Sinclair brands) have me also stuck in limbo. They will not say what I can or can't launch with... Their lawyers tend to play it safe with generic legal email replies and that aren't very specific in regard to what is "passing-off" or not allowed.

I wanted to reach out to the community and hopefully get some support from you guys.

I feel this would be a great product - just to give another option for Amiga fans at a good price (retro computing is already an expensive hobby!) and these mice and keyboards would work on new systems for NextGen Amigas, yet also save wear on tear on collectable retro Amigas via using adapters. They'd even be a good option if an original keyboard or mouse is not available, or if it is already too expensive. You may have a broken or faulty one on your A1000-A4000 for example...

I realise A1200.net and other projects are already filling the need for replacement keycaps or cases, mechanical keys etc etc and I love all of this and I've even pledged myself - so with that in mind I wanted to go a different route and not tread on anyone's toes.

I also wish to donate to well-known vintage computing charities too, so it will be for a good cause.

If anyone knows anyone at Amiga Inc. or Sky UK, or has friends or colleagues that may know anyone that could give me some help or an inroad to get the project started in regard to licensing it would be a great help. Please PM me. I really appreciate any support.

I've put a lot of money and time already into setting up the manufacturing and tooling/mold, as well as colour matching, design, having the prototype made, making the video and even meeting with an IP lawyer etc.

I just now need some help and support with the final push.

If anyone wants to see the project and video here is the pre-launch page:

https://www.simulant.uk/input/

Also I am on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/Simulant_Retro

Please sign up on that page to the newsletter and hopefully when I finally do get fully approved I can let you know that the campaign has begun!

I am trying to be very respectful and not start the project without the correct permission.

Thanks very much indeed and I realise this may not be for everyone, but I am just trying to do something which I think is cool and offer another input option for those who can't afford more expensive options, as well as help the community and charities too :)

NOTE ON KEYBOARD & MOUSE DESIGN:
I wanted to note on the keyboard and mouse as I know purists may not like the style of the keycaps or non-tank mouse etc. There are good reasons I've gone this way though.
For one the same mold has to be used for all the computer platforms I want to use (again due to MOQ). So to save production costs and hopefully also give a bit more wrist-strain relief and modern comfort I have gone with "half-height keycaps" rather than full profile ones. These are not completely flat or chiclet laptop style, they still have some shape and profile to them in order to not look completely out of place with classic hardware BUT they do allow for easier manufacturing and a little lower final retail price. The same reasons with not choosing and Amiga-looking or "tank" mouse style really as above, these are a modern and high DPI mouse with micro-switch buttons and really nice and light to use. Again they are neutral in style across the other platforms too such as Acorn/Amstrad etc. The result means that I hope to have both mouse and keyboard available for under £60/$75 and bearing in mind that includes licensing and donating to charity. I can only estimate this at this stage of course but I will give the best feasible price!

I'd love a bunch of these to go with a MiSTer, to complement machines I used at friend's houses back in the day but didn't actually own.

Simulant, I know you only have the Amiga prototype, but adding pictures of the other variants may help this thread, I believe this project can be a great asset to the retro scene :)

Hi thanks for the kind words and support. So far my planned campaign has been a bit like Marmite, with some loving the idea and some hating it!! It's nice to get all the positive feedback from those who do like it, thanks so much :)

I do have 3D renders planned of all the designs, but until I get more firm licensing approval I didn't want to post these as I don't want to upset any of the IP holders or trademark owners etc with photos of products that look more real. But I'm happy to post the original design mockups below if it helps:

Awesome project. I just signed up for info.

Do you plan on having different language layouts as a choice for the first run(s) already? I ask because I'd take several of these, if German layout is available...

Hi thanks for the reply - I've updated the image in the last post too, as I posted an older one and the current designs are improved (see above).

Yes different language layouts are planned if there is enough demand, I would probably need to use stretch goals or different pledge ordering options to achieve this but the languages/regions with the most backers would certainly be given their own layouts if possible.

Wow thank you! We will try for AZERTY hopefully if we can, it will depend on what the factory can do for us within the budget etc. Thanks very much for your support and let's hope it can keep gaining interest :)

Backed

Backed

As I'm looking for a CD32 sytle keyboard and mouse I gladly backed this project. and shared on my FB and such.

But Alas I suspect the chances of making that 190K are slim... sorry bud, I really hope you make it!

Hi thanks so much for your support! Yes it is a lofty amount of money to raise and uptake is a bit too slow currently, but we'll keep trying as we have nothing to lose and it is a risk free bet for backers as they won't get charged if we don't make it :)

I'll let you know about Plan B if we don't get there ;) But for now I'm just trying to keep positive and keep trying. Thanks once again for the support, it is really appreciated!

I have tried to bring your project to a French FB page and the feedback I received was awful — being French myself I felt extremely embarrassed and sorry...
They basically say your keyboards are just $25 keyboards from amazon repainted and enhanced with stickers... well, you understand why I feel sorry...
Anyway, I find them cool. :)
You just created the cream colour one and I’m now puzzled as I can only pick 2... out of 3!
I might have to back another one, haha.

Hi thanks so much for your help, I am sorry also for any negative feedback. People get very angry and some users can be very elite or purist about wanting replicas and authentic copies - the problem is there aren't any copies otherwise I would buy them myself! At least we are trying to make a nice solution. They're obviously not from Amazon, they're being made for us in a factory too - so these are just silly comments from people that haven't done the research and don't know how difficult it is to actually have products made and injection moulded. No stickers are being used either! And nothing is repainted, the plastic is the correct colour-matched plastic and made in the factory that way.

The problem is they don't always realise just how much it does cost to make such products. We are asking for £38K per design, but with all five designs together this makes a very big funding goal.

I think some Amiga users in particular don't always want to admit Commodore actually went bankrupt, their old original machines aren't going anywhere - and no new ones are coming either!! ;) Offering a keyboard and mouse that takes inspiration doesn't hurt anybody and is useful to some people like yourself!

I am glad you like them anyway!! Feel free to back as many as you like, we do a "Combo reward" where you can mix and match and add different things in by just doing multiples of the price listed.

Thanks again for trying to help and spread the word. And don't worry about the negativity - they don't have to back the project and that is fine, we won't be offended but non-constructive criticisms do always surprise me as my mother always taught me to not say anything if I don't have anything positive to say! :)

Its Still Alive!

Its Still Alive!

Just stumbled on this great project. Shame the kickstarter didn't reach the goal, but its great to see the project is still alive with Simulant taking registrations for preorders. I've registered and fingers crossed they pull it off.
