Hiya,

Just a quick post to introduce myself, my name is Dean and I'm a retro gaming fan. I've been playing games for most of my life and have recently started collecting. I'm a games programmer by trade, working mostly with social and mobile games.

At the moment I'm shopping around for my first ever Amiga (I was a PC and console player back in the day) and looking forward to getting into collecting for it. I also wanted to try my hand at programming for them :)

Hello! and Welcome.

This is just the right place to start your amiga adventure.......Its easy to rush in and get something and then realise you actually wanted something else though......

Thanks :)

Just sort of dipping my toe in at the moment. Thinking of starting with an A1200, picking up a couple of old classic games and seeing where I go from there :)

Yep, that's the way forwards. Usual things are an a1200, cf hard drive for whdload and all the games, and some extra memory/accelerator so as to be able to run the whdload games.

The cf hard drive stuff looks cool, I'm really amazed by modern hardware being mixed with retro hardware, and just how moddable these are, it's great.

For the games I prefer to get the originals rather than download them, I like getting them slower over time, keeps it fresh and interesting. I don't emulate much for that reason too :)

Fair enough ?. I just got fed up with unreliable floppies and odd incompatibilities. But I see the attraction.

I've not collected any floppy based games before, so hadn't really thought about how unreliable they are. I'll prob download them as I get them then and run them off the hard drive like you say :)

Have you been collecting long? What's the setup of a seasoned Amiga guy such as yourself look like?

I am hardly seasoned my friend. To my mind the question is what do you want to get out of it or use the Amiga for? I recently got an a500 to put out in the summerhouse as a purely games machine, but got fed up with floppy related issues etc and so replaced it with basically the setup I recommended for you. Whdload just works normally, and I wanted a few specific games from my youth. When friends are over its nice to have igame and be able to quickly search for any they remember from their youth as well. Most of my ups and downs, including mistakes etc are on my amibay blog.

Sounds like a good setup :) I'll check out your blog!

I struggled to get an a1200 for the price I was hoping for, might just be an eBay anomaly but they seemed to be selling for more than I'd noticed a couple months back (wonder if its a Christmas thing?).

So instead I bought an a500 to play with while I save (just had a new baby, 3rd one, so could be a while, lol). Trouble is the Mrs. has took it off me until Christmas. The meanie :p

Terribly mean! Price discussions are not really allowed on amibay as they are classed as price driving. But I know what you mean. it's why I thought I would go down the a500 route for the summerhouse, but in the end I should have done what I did in the end and gone straight for the a1200, but thats just me. Loads of people get on well with a500s and prefer the floppy disk based option. Or install a gotek but that didn't work for me for the specific games I wanted.

Oops sorry, didn't realise I was breaking the rules. I'll keep things price-free from now on :)

That gotek is interesting, hadn't considered that as an option. Did you have mixed results though when you tried it?

I made my first purchase from a gent on Amibay today for Monkey Island and Theme Park, two of my fave PC games. Looking forward to seeing how they fare on the Amiga :)

Just read through your blogs, you mention your gotek troubles in there :) the summerhouse man cave sounds sweet.

Yeah, I was only really using it for a couple of games and for so.e reason just couldn't get supercars 2 to work despite forum help. Adfs that worked for others just wouldn't for me. Must have been something about my setup. Really annoying and as I said, I got fed up and reverted to an a1200 as I had bought an aca1221 anyway. Congrats on the new arrival by the way (and I didn't mean the Amiga ?. )
