Ok, someone who you did not knew, a large amount of money, a shady location at best, come on... It only logical.

I don't know about you but I do not know anyone on ebay or amibay personally that I buy things from, the location was hardly shady it's a 10 minute drive from my door (at least when it all started out). The whole point of the tale is to emphasise the importance of not paying with gift or bank transfer.

Sounds to me you did the right thing. I've always found PayPal are sympathetic when dealing with them, especially via phone. They aren't all bad, and that's why we pay fees for that level of protection.

As as if anyone with half a brain would send thousands as a gift in a business transaction, but I'm sure it Happens!

Unfortunately all too often,,, we get quite a few "I sent funds and not heard anything since and not responding to my PM's can you help!!"

the 1st thing we ask is did you pay ask gift ?? which usually replies with either yes or BAC's

Ok just bumping this thread as a number of sales have been hi lighted / reported to us again have fell foul of the gift / bacs then all gone quiet no goods arrive or pms responded too


PLEASE always if you can pay via a protected payment method like paypal as goods.

Same goes for trades. Work some sort of saftey net if possible if one side decides not to post.

Check the members feedback as a guide not proof and if continuously active. Not just a Long time member who suddenly came back after a year or so and listing several high value items.


Please protect yourselves we are just a forum and can only do so much to help.

If this still continues we will be forced to implement an additional rule "as goods only or no support from amibay" your risk

Let me just make this point CRYSTAL CLEAR.

If you pay someone with Paypal Friends & Family/BACS/Wire transfer etc etc there is NO comeback if the seller/trader rips you off. NO PROTECTION AGAINST FRAUD. NOTHING. Your money is gone.

Is it really worth the risk to save 4%?

Also a quick thing to add.

Always insist items are posted with full recorded tracking. This is essential in case of a dispute.
If you can show the tracking details to paypal as a seller you can prove you sent the item and it arrived. Equally as a buyer you can use the tracking to prove you never received it.

In addition insured shipping is highly recommended for more expensive items. If the item goes missing or arrives damaged you are both covered.

Our pretty widely known rule about discussing *any* prices, pretty much means not to discuss *any* prices - even if you think they're crazy.

We never link to ebay auctions or discuss prices of ebay BINs either. Come on now

What always worries me is time limits. There are some built in with eBay / PayPal. Better to raise a CLAIM early (and potentially have to apologise) than later (and find out you can't because a time limit has passed).

e.g. You have 180 days to open a dispute but only 20 days having opened your dispute to raise a claim!

New guys posting expensive stuff = Ignore.

Why can't they sell it at a reasonable price? Anyone can be a ass and sell for a crazy price but it wouldnt hurt to sell at a fair price.

Thats one thing about Retro stuff i've hated.

come chaps don't send large amounts of money to what is basically a complete stranger halfway around the world without any protection in place.

i recently had a guy buying a phone off other bay, he came back two weeks later saying it was`nt him that sent the offer. (change of mind and all that considered)
be carfull.

PAYPAL have a limited amount of days before you can with draw the payment /Funds. on reciept of tracking number. without it its down to Paypal insurance. as people can WITHDRAW payment on GIFTED, once its dispatched YOUR SCREWED. it was a £500 phone in my case.

So even though we are careful about new signups and carry out some basic security checks some scroats still get in and rob our members.

Thank goodness it wasn't IBAN etc.

Please be very careful when sending money to a total stranger.

The example referenced in post #54 had obvious Red Flags in the For Sale thread:

1) New user
2) Zero feedback
3) High value item

The other (missing) red flag was Paypal Gift or Bank transfer only payment, but 3 out of 4 red flags should be enough to wake up and smell the coffee.

I could be wrong but, as I remember it, if you gift using existing balance then no fees, but if you gift using credit card then there is a fee.
Never paid via bank account so don't know what might apply there.
