The example referenced in post #54 had obvious Red Flags in the For Sale thread:

1) New user
2) Zero feedback
3) High value item

The other (missing) red flag was Paypal Gift or Bank transfer only payment, but 3 out of 4 red flags should be enough to wake up and smell the coffee. ;)

Just had this exact situation and the seller is now becoming a bit irate. I offered to pay the extra fees and this was refused.

Trust is earned over time, don't let anyone guilt you into doing something you shouldn't do.

Exactly - If you're not happy with any deal just walk away.

That "Paypal-Gift"-thing must be stopped. A lot of misunderstandings took place in the past because of that. Are you selling something mister? Then the buyer must be pay for goods, and you're free to add that paypal fee to your final asking price, if the problem is for that pointless 4%.

@J.T.Kirk

You seem to have forgotten that Paypal purchase has been used by buyers to scam sellers. Many buyers don't want to pay for tracking + insurance on low cost items. The cost of safe shipping is often more than the cost of the items.

Now, what happens a buyer convinces a seller to use unsafe (but economical) shipping methods and then sends the seller a Paypal purchase payment? The buyer simply files a non-delivery claim with Paypal and gets a full refund. So sellers have to look out for "Red Flags" too.

I get your point, and you're right. Although the truth is somewhere in-between. Honestly, I always send my parcels (even low cost) with registered shipping, just to avoid that scam-thing you mentioned. I prefer to pay that little extra for registered shipping (even if the buyer paid for regular one), just for peace of mind. Ultimately, all comes down to trust and reliability from both parties.

I get your point but... The cost of tracked shipping is low when I ship local and for international buyers it's very expensive (e.g. about 1 USD local and 14 USD international). Insurance is also higher for international buyers because I have to use Priority mail.

Indeed. The prices are not identical of course regarding tracking postage. In other countries the difference between regular shipping and register one is very cheap compared to yours for example. I don't know if a proof-of-postage really counts.

The basic rule we have always gone by on Amibay is if you can't afford to lose the money you pay extra for tracked and insured shipping. Otherwise you always risk losing both the item and your money. And yes, that applies to both buyers and sellers.

Buyers
‐----------
Purchase an expensive item, always insist on it being shipped by a fully tracked and insured shipping method.

And always use full PayPal payment with fees so that you are buyer protected.

Purchase a cheap item, if you are not to worried about losing the money, then cheap untracked shipping won't be such a risk.

Equally if an item is under £10 then Paypal gift payments won't be such a risk either. But remember if you pay by gift it's like handing the seller cash. No refunds or complains resolutions.

Sellers
-----------
Where possible always sent an item by at least recorded post so a logged delivery can be seen to prove you shipped the item and it was delivered. Failure to be able to show a paper trail will always mean Paypal rules in favour of the buyer and they will refund them.

Never insist on gift payments. A buyer has a right to protect their purchase in case something goes wrong. You can only state gift payment on very low value sales, such as free items where only postage is required. Any item over £10 should always use full Paypal with fees. You can however state a buyer pays the fees in your listing if you wish.

Exception
----------------
If you know the buyer/seller well then you have more trust in the transaction. So you might agree privately via PM to pay via gift or to ship cheaply. But then you both take the risk of shipping going wrong or payments not returnable. Such an agreement can't be arbitrated by Amibay moderators in case of a dispute, but we would still mediate the communication between involved members to help.

At the end of the day all trades are agreed between the buyer and seller. Amibay is only the facilitator and we don't have any actual involvement in the trade other than hosting the listing and filtering dishonest members from the site. It is a member's responsibility to be sensible and use correct payment and shipping methods to protect both sides of a trade.

Another Xmas bump

keep safe peeps...

Time for another bump with the influx of new members with high value items,.

please beware the "ONLY Paypal friends or IBAN" ONLY sales.

keep safe.

Might also be an idea if it's a new member to see who's behind the account, I mean most members are in reach of each other.
I for one would be happy to check out a new member here in the Netherlands selling a high value item, we know most of the Amiga users here.
But that goes for all countries, I can imagine large countries like the US are a bit thin because of the distance their, but hey, if you are in the neighborhood, why not ?

For me, high value items have always been sent maximum insured and maximum protected.
For instance I use the Post NL boxes to comply with their sizes and then I pack the item in an Ikea Salma box, the item ofcourse in an ESD bag!
The whole box is taped shut even on the inside and paper towels inside to deal with moisture and temperature.
With a high value item I usually didn't charge for postage, unless it was ridiculously high.

On selling within the Netherlands I even went to deliver it personally.

I have also learned my lesson with Paypal and Ebay, both accounts were closed 2 months ago after years of inactivity anyway, but it was with none computer products and low value back in the days.
I for one have had it with scammers and also on the Dutch version marktplaats.nl which was bought by Ebay a few years ago.

So if a new member sells a high value item in the Netherlands or even Belgium for that matter or near the border on Germany I'm willing to check it out and verify the thing, that would at least give the buyer and seller some confidence ;-)

very usefull and informative thread. Thanks for the advices. I personally did not know about the gift option in paypal.
