I bought a not really very cheap 500W unit off Ebay and thought it must be good enough. Turns out it wasn't. The +5V line is so bad the machine just doesn't boot :( I can say avoid all the Cit M-500U mATX PSU's on Ebay right now, but what i'd like to know is can anyone recommend a good mATX PSU for my fully loaded PPC A1200? It draws around 6.2 Amps on the +5V rail and I think the main problem with the Cit was the Voltage amount. It measured 5.01V with no load which I think is too low (My wonderful but getting very toastie, APower is 5.23V without load). So I need one that has good Voltage too. I'm about to order this one here: -

As my general research leads me to believe Seasonic make the best mATX PSU's or at least are one of the best manufacturers. But before I lay down the equivalent of £58 on that PSU and find its just as bad as the Cit (doubtful, but you never know) I'd like to hear of anyone who has sucessfully converted an mATX PSU to use with a PPC A1200 system and in particular with a BVision installed, if you have, what PSU did you use?

Cheers! :)

While I have no experience with PPC Amiga's, I know Seasonic makes some very, very good power supplies. Extremely efficient and typically very quiet as well. You defiantly get your moneys worth from them.

With that said, that seems a bit overkill and a more importantly a bit too much money for that PSU. Anywhere you can source it from for cheaper?

There is also the SeaSonic SS-300SFD, which as far as I can tell is pretty much the exact same psu. Its still 80 plus rated and delivers far, far more juice than you would need to power your setup. Might be able to find it cheaper as it seems there are stores that still sell them.

Yeah its expensive, i'm trying to find one locally to balance up on postage though. Usually I end up having to pay alot in postage from another country even if the PSU was cheap, With that one I pay more for the PSU but barely anything for the postage. I will check out that model too that you talk of and I think try and find some more Seasonic mATX PSU's locally. Its really hard sourcing them in DK though. Thanks for the advice :)

We can get them fairly cheap here in the States, but shipping is still going to hose you.

Thanks Ed, I'll check out their range too :)

yeah thgill, thats the problem, i've seen some nice PSU's in the States but the shipping cancels out any saving.

A simple advice: ATX PSU only regulates themselves when about 15~20% of +5V rail is loaded (some ordinary PSU regulates from the +12V, which is plainly featherbrained!).

That's may the cause of the 500W PSU failed. That and the fact the PC world changed for 3.3V rails long ago. For make the Amiga consume 10A on the rail may be a hard quest. Stupid economic machine! Modern world demands you to waste energy as an electric boiler!

Sticking with "underpowered" PSU bricks may be a good measure for wedge Amigas.

Also notice that even excellent quality PSU can have minor variations on the supplied voltages.

Thanks for the advice rkauer :) What you say makes sense because I tested the supply on a regular PC before I cut the wires (and voided the warranty) and it was fine there. Never really thought about higher Wattage being a burden!

Well, I ended up reading about the Be Quiet SFX Power 350 like Ed has, and now i've plumped for one of these, I managed to find one locally too, it was still 500Kr (everything is so bloody expensive here) but its a VERY efficient PSU at 86%. It sounds really nice on paper, so lets hope it works! Should be here in the next few days :)

Oh gawd! I hope it's ok after recommending it. :)

I was really impressed with the one I bought and so quiet.

Here's what I have connected:

A1200 + Blizzard IV 030/50 (well 46MHz).
Mediator TX
Radeon 9250 256Mb
Subway USB
USB Card reader
USB Mouse and keyboard
Fast ATA 1200 MkIII
DVDROM
2 HDD's
A couple of cooling fans

I've yet to add SCSI, Network and Sound cards and a Mk 2 Indivision AGA when they're available.

Yeah Ed mate, i'm gonna blame you totally if it doesn't work! :D HAHA! No just kidding of course! :D

Your system is mighty enough to justify me trying it on mine I think, and the reviews i've read on it convinced me that this one is a really nice supply. :)
