IDE68k - How to install?

Hi!

I got an IDE68k for my A500+ and also have an A5000 020/4mb expansion I want to use. I'm obviously not sure the two will be compatible but I'm guessing I should fit the Turbo Board to the CPU socket, the IDE68k to the Turbo Board and the 68000 on top of the IDE68k?

This page says about two wires to solder but does not give anymore info and I can't find any documented installation instructions :help:

Any help would be appreciated! I hope to use a CF-IDE adapter to run some basic WHDload games and CWB 68k on this setup

I will do a project page once I've started the build, I understand the A5000 is pretty rare so will be nice to show some pics of that

Are you planning to put the keyboard and lid back on?

I had trouble getting just the IDE68K to fit under the keyboard as it took contact to the 68000 sitting on the IDE68K. Looking at the A5000, it seems to move the CPU socket further back. I'd say the only way to get them physically fit inside the case would be that the A5000 is put on the original CPU socket, the IDE68K on A5000's socket and the 68000 on IDE68K. Still it may be a tight fit.

About the wires, there are through holes next to the expansion card edge contacts. Mika used to have a picture of where the wires should be soldered but can't seem to find it now. Can't remember which holes were the correct ones but I should have a picture of my installation somewhere. Need to do some digging.

EDIT: Here's a pic of my IDE68K installation showing the wires. Not the best of angles, I admit. The wires come from a jumper header in IDE68K.

I would imagine that if you wanted it to work you might have to have it below the accelerator?? Otherwise would it work when the 020 was activated?

That's exactly what I was thinking! I am looking for an accelerator for my A500+ that has an IDE68K. So far I think a Derringer would be the best shot.

Thanks for the info guys, is there anything which shows clearer where I need to solder?

To be honest if I'd known this needs hacking to the motherboard to work I probably wouldn't have gone with the IDE68k, I thought it was just plug and play

I might wait till the Amibay event before messing with it too much as I'm a little worried about that...

Of course I have to test it first without the accelerator and then with it.

Hi, not at all! I should do more research before getting excited and making impulse buys

I wanted an internal IDE to go with my A5000 board so I guess this would be the best option and I'm in no rush to get it up and running

As Antti pointed out, http://www.students.tut.fi/~leinone3/ide/i68k.html has better pictures of soldering the two wires. Not that bad actually and some have even soldered a jumper header for better versatility.

You don't have to solder. You can use IC clip-on flying leads. But the solder points are so huge and you can add pins so that it is easy to remove.

Did you try this on a plain A500 the plus might have a few fixs that a
500 does not..
