Internet connecting help required.

Well this is something that has been on my mind a while now. Since i'm surfing the net reliably without wires, I thought of putting the router's ethernet ports to good use too. However the router is in another room and trailing a bright colour'd thick ethernet cable is a bit unsightly so I was wondering... Would it be possible to connect through my PeeCee rather then directly since my PeeCee is wireless too? If not, I have thought of another option that im sure it's probably possible but may not be a cheap solution.

Either way I have drawn some rather crude illistrations on what my ideas are using an Acorn as an example of an old computer to connect up. The main idea is that this would be a constant internet connection (as if it was connected directly to the router). Thus avoiding too much software and configuring work (I hope!).

Any help and support from anyone would go a long way.

Basically, it sounds like you just want your PC to route. You'll probably also want the PC to perform NAT on the wired side, so it shows up to your router as your PCs IP.

If your PC is running Linux, it's easy.. Just set up routing and masquerading for NAT on the wired ethernet side...

I think you can do the same with Windows (Internet Connection Sharing or ???) but I haven't done that in Windows..

If the Amiga applications you needed supported proxies, you could just set up a Proxy server on the PC and not worry about the routing and NAT, but I'm not sure if what you want to do supports proxying. If so, you don't need your PC to route even.

So long as you don't mind having you PC on all the time whenever you want to use the net on the Acorn then yes you could do what you are thinking of.

Otherwise you could get a second wireless router with ethernet ports and set it up as an access point, ie. it talks wirelessly to your first router and then you can plug things into its (the 2nd router) ethernet ports. A bit more expensive than using the PC but less power usage.

yes, Windows Internet Connection Sharing will do what you want, you merely need a cheap second wired ethernet card in the PC

connect to the router via wireless, turn internet connection sharing on and share it through the second ethernet card, second computer will connect to the PC as though it was simply a router.

(a lot of people who have multi computers sharing files through a router do not know you can also put multiple ethernet cards in the computers and 'bridge' the connections to double the speed throughput to the computers (ie. 2 computers sharing a 4 port 100mbps router, can bridge 2 connection each to the router for a 200mbps connection across the 2 computers))

Rule of thumb is not to run Ethernet cable parallel with Mains cables as you get a Magnetic Induction on the Data cable which can corrupt data. ....Then, this method of connecting is released. :roll:

I'm not a wireless fan in the slightest, but if needs must, Hard Wire your Gateway to the internet (Router/Switch/Modem) & then use a wireless network into that Gateway via a hard wired cable. If you run an encrypted Wireless Router, it will save your neighbours having access to your Network.

Ps: wireless network bridge it is called in admin terms.

Ps2: it can be done with old recycled wireless routers as well if you hack linux on it, it can provide wireless -> 4 ethernet connectors.

You lock your car to keep people from easily stealing your stuff.
That's hiding your SSID and WEP.

Now you can go WPA. That's like locking your car and setting the alarm.
Except, in my neighborhood, car alarms go off and no one looks. And if someone really wants something, they will break the window and take it regardless of the car alarm. It's better, but I don't think it's that much better.

You're looking at stopping the person browsing for free internet. If you have WEP and he cracks it, he's no longer browsing... he's actively breaking the law.

Or you could do what I do.. Give away internet.. Yep, open access point..
It's proxied and logged (and bandwidth throttled), but open...
In my neck of the woods, it hasn't been a problem (judging by the logs)...
I did have to add the bandwidth throttling when the iPhones started proliferating.. ;-)

That is of course at home.. At work, WPA with LEAP.. ;-)
WPA by itself isn't safe you know? You can crack WPA/WPA2 now...
How paranoid do you want to be? ;-)

A second flaw exists in the method with which WPA initializes its encryption scheme. Consequently, it's actually easier to crack WPA than it is to crack WEP.

Erm, you could always turn on MAC filtering as well; that way only authorised PC's connect to your wireless... unless your neighbours are so l33t that they can spoof a MAC address as well!!

As for Wireless security, I use WPA2. Pretty secure enough though MAC filtering would be handy if I knew how to do it but apparently it's nearly impossible to have a WPA connection.

Personally, I run my wireless with WEP enabled. I don't feel the need to do anything more than that. It stops me from being the 'low hanging fruit' of easy internet access and it works with all my clients.
