Laptop PSU conversion forAmiga

Unfortunately, my A1200 fitted with a Blizzard 030 MkIV + SCSI kit + 256mb + 4GB CF card crashes after about 2 hours use.

I think it must be too expanded for a heavy A500 PSU, because using another Amiga PSU (a lighter one) it crashes sooner. The crashes also appear linked to the PSU i.e. switching PSU gets the Amiga working again.

Now, PSUs for laptops are easy to come by. Unlike a desktop PSU they don't have those noisy fans attached, are a nice compact size and nicely presented.

What would I need to do to go about making an adapter to plug one of these to an A1200?

The output to the laptop PSU I have here is 19V, whereas the Amiga PSU outputs 12V. Is this a substantial improvement?

Any help would be appreciated.

At the risk of being ninja'd in this thread by someone else's reply, your issue is that you need more current, not more voltage. A laptop PSU lacks the multiple voltages that the Amiga needs. You would be better off adapting a more modern ATX power supply into the A500 PSU's case, so that the PSU looks like the original, but provides a lot more oomph compared to the original.

Are you sure? Even with all that extra hardware? I would think that a laptop PSU would struggle to keep his setup going.

Laptop PSUs come in many different shapes and sizes. The one I'm using with the laptop I am currently sitting at is rated for 170W@20V so could in theory run quite a few heavily expanded Amigas. I think PicoPSUs requires 12V though as it is not regulating the 12V rail and just passing it through to the output.

What I did was just to buy a ready made modified PSU from AmigaKit that has the right lead wired in, I have just looked there and cannot see it now, but I'm sure you could find one somewhere. I then replaced the fan with this one and it really is very quite indeed. I have had no problems what so ever powering my A1200 with Blizzard 030/SCSI kit and DSS8+ sampler.

PICOPSU 80W or 120W (depending on hardware) and a suitable 12v external power supply depending on what you choose.
A nice 120W combo is here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120W-Pico...-/190400958529?pt=PCA_UPS&hash=item2c54c81041 , this can provide enough juice for everything you might need in an A1200.

Generally speaking you want a 6.6A 12v psu for the 80W model and a 10A for the 120W pico.
