Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a new tv which will be used mainly for wii u gaming. To date I only have experience playing games on plasma sets and have no experience with led. I've been in to a national tv and audio store and the advice was to go for led due to screen burn on the plasma. I have seen minor screen burn othe current tv but as the game play has been very minimal it has not been an issue. Wit the new tv my play time will be increased. I've seen the Samsung Ue40eh5000 in store and the picture is great but not sure how it would fare to gaming. I have heard mixed reports which some saying its excellent once the settings are tweaked and at £350 the price is acceptable.

What are people's thoughts and opinions on the subject? The tv must be 1080p.

Thanks,

Robert

Disclaimer: Am tired, so below wording may not be very structured :D

It really depends on how sensitive you are to input lag and if the tv is for gaming I'd personally put that as top priority. It's been a few months since I've been in the flatscreen loop, but not much has been released in the meantime - to my knowledge. I tried a lot of different screens at home and my conclusions: Go for a mid range - cheap screen, because those usually inject less processing. If I were on the lookout today, I'd go for the Panny TX-L32C5E (LCD) or the Panny GT Plasma range. Sharp also have some good screens with minimal processing delay. Whatever you do do not get a set with an LG or Philips screen for gaming.
Plasma burn in is mostly an issue of the past, so I wouldn't worry about it. I personally wouldn't get a Sammy either as most are too slow, though not as bad as LG and Philips.

Any specific reason why it has to be 1080p? It won't matter for gaming unless you hook up a powerful pc and sit really close or have a really big screen - just saying. Wii U games aren't in 1080p - except for Rayman Legends, which may be.

i would reccomend the hd projector i bought a little while back BNIB buyit now on ebay.
but i think the guy put the wrong price in..
it has 20k hours lamp life aposed to the normal 8k
Really good picture.

and it was really inexpensive..

now the reason i cant reccomend it, and the reason i think he put the wrong price in.
is that he sold 6 of them then stopped selling the things.

generaly these projectors wont last long enough to be viable for me.
And a new lamp for the things is hundreds of pounds.
But with the price of the one i got i had no problems buying it and even it it only had 8k hrs lamp life i could just buy a new one when it went pop..

as for a tv..
i like crt. and im not fussed about HD.
Sorry for the useless post,

We just bought a Samsung 40" LED Smart TV for £449 from John Lewis. So it has their 5 year warranty. Really pleased with the image quality, the audio is really good for a thin TV (although it's connected to a home cinema receiver so that will provide the audio most of the time), the features are good, and the smart features are cool too. We were not fused about 3D so didn't bother with the next models up.

Only thing to note is it has wired lan but not WiFi built in. But easy fix for that with a £24 dongle from Amazon.

Works perfectly with the original Wii and a component cable, and I'm happy with it using PS3 AND 360.

It's had great reviews online by customers. A few people online have said it has a slow refresh, but I'm not noticing any. It's 100Hz refresh isn't as slow as the older 50Hz models, and only slightly slower than 3D models that run at 120Hz in 2D mode. If you want faster refresh then a plasma is better as they are generally 600Hz or higher, but I don't like the softer image as much, and although they have built in pixel shifting to prevent burn in, it's still a possibility. Although for films they are good when over 50". Personally for film and gaming I would pick LCD/LED every time over plasma.

Still got my now aging Samsung Series 5 LCD hooked up. Looks, sounds and runs amazingly in everything, both retro and modern

Wont be upgrading for a while, still very happy with this one :D

IMO, unless you're after what I consider the novelty stuff like 3D, some may be better than others but you can't go wrong with any good name LCD or LED TV these days. Tech has advanced to the point where what you'll get is going to be either great or better.

Refresh rates really have nothing to do with input lag. For gaming you want the less processing possible. For example displaying 60fps in 100hz just interpolates frames and is really really bad for gaming - not to mention looking awful (in my opinion :)). Higher refresh rates are good for active 3d because they shift the picture faster. The rest is mostly marketing shenanigans.

@Harrison: The softer image you mention is not a plasma specific thing, it's a setup issue. If anything plasma's can appear sharper because they have better black levels and higher contrast.

I disagree. Because of the way plasma screens work they will always have a softer image compared to a good LCD display. It also depends on panel size and other factors though, such as type of backlighting.

BTW, the Samsung I just got scored really well in black level tests.

Lets agree to disagree then :D

Thanks for the replies. I'm not too bothered with 3d, smart tv or such things, just a tv that is good for gaming without lag or ghosting. I've maybe made the mistake by looking into it too much as some say to avoid led altogether while other say the opposite. The same goes for the refresh rates.

Anyone play cod on Xbox or ps3 on their set? If so, have you seen any motin blur?

Cheers.

The two I recommended do not exhibit any noticeable motion blur. I have an older Bravia W4000 in the living room and an E4000 in the gaming room (same screens, different design) and that series - even though it's 4 years old - is really a gamers dream. It's a 1080p LCD with excellent black levels for an lcd and has 8ms input lag (half a frame) - which has not been beaten yet. The Sammy's today usually have 30-45ms (2-3 frames) - somewhat noticeably - and LG and Philips are 80-120ms - very noticeable :)
The Panny's I recommended have 1-2 frames, but the plasma obviously has the best black levels.

How sensitive you are to it also depends on the game. It'll be more noticeable in COD (being a 50-60fps game), than say Halo (30 fps).

As I said - a tv for gaming should have low input lag as first priority :)
