Hey guys, I've realised that giving up my consoles altogether wasn't the best idea as I'm missing a few games that I used to enjoy as a way to relax.

Besides that though, I'm seeing owning a 360 as a possible incentive to develop myself as a programmer, with XNA and its indie dev support. However, I know that XNA is dead, but will it not be alive so long as the 360 is?

Another thing swaying my decision here is that Yakuza, is an awesome series I'd really like, and is only available on PS3. Does the PS3 have anything like XNA whatsoever? Most other games I'd like are multi-platform, but not PC still.

Given next year will be focused on Apple development, and AI with Prolog, I may just be giving myself extra work for nothing trying to do something with XNA on top of things. Perhaps I should just see the consoles purely as a way to unwind...

Input please?

Hope that help

As far as I know....Yabasic was on PS 2 but why didnt sony release Yabasic 2 on PS 3 is because they didnt want pay extra as class as computer like ps 2 was:roll:

Xbox 360 with XNA are easy to make :)

You better off coding Mobile where deploy once then it go on any plaform(tablets, phone, computer and so on!)

P.S. Coding on PS 3 for first time can be pure hell because it isnt easy to make whatever you want to make. You have learn Cell coding before you go advance I think!

Ah YaBasic... I remember that... Net Yaroze PS1... Brings back memories.

Yeah I think you may be right AF. I'll get a console for leisure and focus on mobile development for the next year. Maybe PS4 will come up with some indie dev support for after I graduate :D

Nice to talk about this stuff though! I live every day with nobody but myself to speak to about techie things, which is why I spend so much time on here. It fills a hole. :D

PS 4 is easy to devolp :)

I wish sony put Yabasic 4 in as it would get some new kids on block coding somethings never seen before

Today, Most people I know are using Unity 3D(As far as I know as it can create on PS 4) and I try Unity 3D but it not my cup of tea. You could easily make anythings with it :)

Computer of today dont Have Basic build in which is a shame....

But still...You got

Raspberry PI
Fignion (it only £20 and you can code em even thought it only 16KB Ram!)

I would like to see more PI Clones coming along with Basic build in:thumbsup:

Closest thing we have today on most machines is VisualBASIC which I personally think is

As my tutor said, it makes a good prototyping language but it's not very practical. Our uni has too much focus on drag and drop elements, and we don't really get to appreciate the underlying code as much as I feel we should. Because of this I've been pretty much the only one to not use that aspect of the IDE's. I'm teh only one who can say all my code has been hand done, even if my UI doesn't look as good as some peoples.

BASIC itself, like C= BASIC, I don't think is powerful enough for most modern day usage. I suppose you could always install a C64 emulator or something though if you wanted it on a modern machine.

Most modern languages are object oriented and very high level in comparison. I was speaking to Sardine when he came to pick up the C64, who mentioned a lot of C=BASIC stuff and is mostly completely alien to me. Modern languages are more structured and too far away from the machine. Once I'm done with the degree I'm going to make it a point to learn something like BASIC or HASKELL so I can develop a better understanding of how these languages developed.

Closest thing Sony has to XNA is PSMobile for PS Vita. It uses C# and so does XNA. You can't publish C# apps on PS3 PSN. The fact they renamed it from PS Suite to PS Mobile makes it seem like it will stay mobile only but maybe they'll rename it again for PS4.

Real console devs use C++ and the indie dev requirements are getting easier. Not as cheap and easy as XNA but much more portable and potential for profit.

Personally I think if you want to get into console game development don't bother with any of the mainstream consoles as there are always costs involved. Instead go open source and stick with Android based consoles or tablets. That way you are free to do exactly what you want, and if you create something you like then it's fairly easy to release it and maybe even make a bit of pocket money from it. There is also a huge scene to help you.

Sounds like a plan. I've always believed C++ is the way to go, but with the final year of the degree to go and that focusing on Objective-C, I think C++ may be a couple of years off for me yet. I'm only just comfortable with the basics of C# and Java, having learned one per year so far instead of continuing with Java in the second year like the other colleges did... We have the advantage that we know C# to a degree, but they all have an extra year of experience with Java.

On the other hand, Objective-C, from what I've heard, isn't too far removed from C++? Maybe it will be a good stepping stone year. I also get free IOS Dev status for the year too.

Sony really need to support small devs more. It's their only real weakness so far for me. I much prefer them over MS otherwise. Only XBOX exclusive game series I enjoy is Halo which I've played to heck.

If you want to play games just use pc emulators if you dont care for owning the hardware (assuming you are talking retro games).
