Modern Alternatives to Old Games?

I'm curious if anyone has found any newer games that satisfy the need to play a specific older game.

Some games, like The Settlers, have obvious modern alternatives since they have had many new incarnations. Something like Turrican has similar games like Hurrican. Legend of Grimrock can cover for things like Eye of the Beholder/Dungeon Master. Telltale Games have been giving us a slew of point and click adventure alternatives.

What about games like:
Armour Geddon (1 and 2)
Stunt Car Racer
Hired guns (Note: Hired Guns 2, while not finished, was floating around a few years back)

I'm sure I'll think of more as time goes by...

Flight Sims seem to be disappearing...

Thoughts?

List of Suggestions so far:
Castles/Castles II: Stronghold Series
Dungeon Keeper: Dungeon, Orcs Must Die(?), Evil Genius, War for the Overworld
Elite: Oolite, Galaxias, Frontier: Dangerous
Great Giana Sisters: Giana_Sisters: Twisted_Dreams
Frontier: Elite II: Pioneer, Genesia, Frontier: Dangerous
Frontier First Encounters: GL FFE, FFE3D, MacJJFE, Frontier: Dangerous
Lost Vikings: Trine Series
Racing Destruction Set: RPM Racing (SNES)
Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri: Civ IV Mod
Skate or Die: Tony Hawk Series, Skate Series
Stunt Car Racer: Trackmania Series, Burnout 3 Takedown, GTA3 (and up), SCR Remake
Test Drive: Need for Speed Series, Test Drive Series
Turrican: Hurrican, Gunlord

Flight Sims: Digital Combat Simulator Series

Some of these are very obvious suggestions, and some are far fetched, but I'm putting them all in regardless.

Ok, not strictly amiga, but certainly made by a reputable developer in such circles, there's but One game I would really like a modern replacement for is Dungeon keeper for the PC. I loved this game so much.. Nothing similar has come out since to my knowledge.

Stunt Car Racer - Check out the Trackmania series of games ;-)

For some great flight sims have a look a the DCS series. Black Shark 2 and A10 Warthog are most excellent :D

@TerrorTrooper

Is Dungeon Keeper one where you design the dungeon? I may have something similar called "Dungeons" but I have yet to play it beyond part of the intro levels. It seems to be a spinoff of the recent Overlord games.

Perhaps also in a similar yet more tower defense-like vein would be Orcs Must Die? Only vaguely recall watching a video of it so I could be way off.

@Gouldin

Trackmania looks excellent.. a little bit Stunts (/4d Sports Driving?), Hard Drivin', S.T.U.N. Runner, and Wipeout mashed together?

I love being able to make my own tracks. I have the newer Modnation Racers for Vita but haven't even tried it. Used to spend hours on Racing Destruction Set on C64. That's another I wouldn't mind a remake/modern version.

@Geraldine

I'm a backer for Frontier: Dangerous! I'ma have to check some of those that you'd mentioned out. Though I never did put any real time into Frontier (or Elite for that matter). The combat was always a bit of a turn-off. I mostly ran the game to watch the intro as a sort of test to see how well my Amiga performed. :D

@Bastich

I'll check those out when I get a chance. Do any of them involve multi-vehicle combat in a large area? I think that's what I miss the most from Armour Geddon. It was a flight sim and then some. Halo and some other games *sort of* do the same thing, but the environments are so tiny.

I used to love playing F A/18 Interceptor. I'd fly as high as I could, burn out my fuel, then try to land without crashing. Also I found out you could land the plan upside-down. :blink:

Birds of Prey was another I spent quite some time in, just screwing around though. ;)

Evil Genius was pretty close, though it's getting long in the tooth now, too.

Check out Ghiana Sisters on Steam for a good little modern-retro platformer. :D

I was really impressed by that one. There's a free demo too.

:Doh: TerrorTrooper said Dungeon Keeper not Dungeon Master. I really must get new glasses :blink:
Anyways apologies, and yes there is a modern re-make, its called War For The Overworld :)

And Frederic_Freakazoid? Yes Frontier had a cool intro, so cool in fact that someone decided to do a re-make of it. :cool:

One I would like to see is a re-make of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, a Civ IV mod would do too.

Edit: Found a mod! Linky

Stunts (/4d Sports Driving?)

Amiga = 4D Sports Driving
PC DOS = Stunts

I loved that game! Spent hours and hours creating tracks and had so much fun playing them afterwards :) Maybe the graphics were a little dull and the controls could have been better and that goes for the collision detection too, but back then I didn't mind, and I still play it once in a while. It also had the cool option for Replay at so many different angles, and the option to save them. You could really make your car do some f*cked up stuff :D

Also Stunt Car Racer was bad GREAT! :D

Never heard about Trackmania, but then again I don't do much modern gaming... Will go look for the game in GameStop asap :D
Thanks for the recommendation Gouldin! :thumbsup:

Trackmania Nations is free on steam btw ;)

I was ranked No:10 in the world on Trackmania Sunrise Extreme at one point :cool: :D (Would have been higher, but some people have way too much time on there hands, I didn't)

Trackmania 2 is kind of out, though they're releasing it in small doses rather than one complete game, so I'm holding out on the sequal despite me owning it :P

Awesome! Downloading... Can barely keep my eyes open and was just on my way to bed, but now I have to try this out first... :popcorn:

I was looking up info on Racing Destruction Set and found out it was ported to the SNES as RPM Racing (with some of the original code intact o.O), and *then* the sequel became Rock N Roll Racing. Now I want to hunt down a copy of RPM Racing as it is essentially Racing Destruction Set without load times.

Still haven't tried Trackmania. I'm wondering if the Wii version is worthwhile or if I should stick with PC stuff...

Hurrican is a pc rewrite of Amiga Turrican. Freeware!

Someone (JOTD?) made a 1:1 conversion of Amiga Gods to pc and it is the same in feeling and playability.

Come on then!!!

Did you like it ?

Were you up all night ??

Have you enough time to get into the world top 10 ? :D

Enquiring minds ;-)

Love it! Stayed up for 2 hours and have played it many times since, inbetween the amiga games of course :)

Some of the levels are just too difficult to get the gold medal in.. I'm up for a race if you add me on steam: amigabozz

Add me too ;-)

My steam I'd is Gouldin :-P

Ah, I don't have it installed anywhere (and no space to do so at the moment!) :-(

It was just you seemed so pleased to have found a replacement for SCR :-D Must admit - loved that game - always used to try for a massive leap off any ramp - then listened for the <crunch> as I landed and the suspension bottomed out and took damage ;-)

Martin...

Haha okay :) Yes SCR is for many of us an all time favourite :) I never managed to complete it, but still had great fun :) You should try TM as soon as posible :)
