I´m impressed of your build, it is amasing what you can puzzel in a A1200 case :-)

Nice work C. It will be interesting how the HXC turns out

Okay... So the hole for the DVDROM was just too wide, I must've gotten carried away with the file at some point lol

Anyways - I've found a product that claims to be workable, and dries (eventually) with similar properties to plastic:

image.jpg

I've filed the hole on the left side (as you look at the front of the drive) to move it 0.5mm as the drive wasn't sitting quite straight, and then used the filler to build up the other side and put a thin layer on the scuffs. I've filed down the opposite side, and now the hole is exactly the right size - that's just the drive front in there balanced, no drive attached to it.

image.jpg

I've applied some more to the scuffs so that I can work on those once the putty has gone off, and I've ordered some vinyl dye to spray the whole case, and the drive front (as this is a spare). Hopefully, it'll leave me with a pristene (spare) case; albeit with a DVDROM hole in it :)

The HxC holes are preformed in the new case when it comes, although I think I might have to be inventive with how to mount the board for it!

Thanks :) Hopefully by documenting everything, it might help someone else that has either made the same mistakes, or help them not to make them in the first place lol
Hi,
this is a great works !

I sanded off the scuffs this evening, and removed the case badge with copious amounts of label remover

image.jpg

The area below the DVDROM hole is now perfectly flat :) I'll take it to work tomorrow to check that the positioning is correct, then I'll bring it home to clean up ready for spraying with the vinyl dye that turned up today (perfect colour too!)

Yup - the fit is now perfect

image.jpg

So as soon as I get some time, I'll spray the whole case and the spare DVDROM front with the vinyl dye - most likely next week as my family is off to stay at my father-in-law's (half term) and I'll be staying at home to keep an eye on the bathroom fitters :)

Edit: Case all stripped down, and dishwashered ready for spraying when I've time ;) (The small parts were cleaned with IPA instead)

A quick spot of modification today soon as I had the machine in pieces... That bit of the RF shield was going to get in the way later

I found some time to spray the case today, and I'm somewhat impressed by the result... Here's everything before I started:

image.jpg

I went with light coats, here's the first:

image.jpg

After a couple of minutes, it's dry to the touch, then you can apply another coat - this is after a couple more:

image.jpg

And a couple more coats later, it looks amazing:

image.jpg

Here's the DVDROM hole that I've filled - the dye has also completely covered the filler to the point that it is almost invisible; so the fillers claims that it behaves just like plastic when dry appear valid:

image.jpg

Here's a shot with the inside of the trap door to show the difference in colour; it's somewhat lighter than even the non-yellowed plastic, so it's more like an Escom white than a Commodore white now:

image.jpg

And maybe the most impressive picture follows; the DVDROM doesn't look like it was ever black now that I've reassembled it - and it completely matches the rest of the parts:

image.jpg

I'll get the machine back together again tomorrow and take another couple of shots - there is no yellow at all on this machine now, and because it's been dyed, it won't go yellow ever again either :)

Sweet! Great work.

Very nice... And you also have outdoor tiles now painted with nice Amiga colour ! ??

I am assuming that the whole outside of the house is already done that way? How cool would that be....

lol - figured it didn't matter as I've been charged with the quest of decking over the patio next year by my wife ;) One of the prices to pay for my hobby - Hopefully I'll get away with just that and not the fencing panels too!

Anyways, I'm bored of waiting for my new case to come, and I've looked at the schematic for the area of motherboard that I was thinking to remove to allow a Ratte switch to be mounted in place of the old RF adapter (which is here - like you didn't know already):

IMG_7541.jpg

And it's far too much work to reconnect the lines that I'd chop by cutting that section away (for my skillset anyway) as there are several layers underneath with connections; so I came up with this solution:

image.jpg

Which leaves the area nicely insulated... And I've enlarged the holes for the ears to allow a shortened Ratte switch to be fitted like so:

image.jpg

The Ratte switch had quite a lot of tail on the legs underneath when it came, which I've filed off as low as I dare without causing it to stop working - it might not look much, but it makes it sit a good 1.5mm closer to the motherboard:

Ratte.jpg

When the new case comes, I'll just have to modify it to allow the connector to fit if needs be. The location of the HxC fittings on the design currently look like they'll foul the FDD too, but having looked at the drive today, it might still fit with the lid of the FDD removed... Will have to see when it comes, as that would be a better solution than having to make another mount. To add insult to injury, they've also altered the location that the HxC buttons are to be extended to; I'm not sure that I like the new location, but it would be simpler to cable.

Molds for the new cases should be nearly finished now (give another week or so for quality inspection) so hopefully not much more waiting!

lol! That's almost eactly what mine will look like - think I'll have put more effort into my Amiga than the decking once either is done though :)

Hi Cozzer79,
thank You for this very intresting topic, it's amazing how Your Amiga looks like.. But... Why did You painted Your housing white instread of black?
Regards,

Cook

It certainly would have saved some hassle wouldn't it? lol :)

I'd bought a Black case already on the Kickstarter, which I was going to put a Pi in, and then decided that original hardware would be more fun. That case will have a number of the modifications I want to make already applied to it (albeit, I'll need to open them up with a sharp knife) - but a fair amount less hassle than cutting them myself from scratch; with the exception of cutting a hole for the DVD-ROM drive again which I'm not particularly looking forward to.

Rather than spray an original case Black, I thought it'd be nice to put it back to how it was - despite having altered it a little. So long story short, it seemed like a good idea at the time :) It'll eventually be a completely Black machine - the HxC screen I have is White writing on Black, so should look quite nice with it!

As the cases are finally being manufactured (never thought it'd take this long!) - I did a spot of Amiga shopping over the weekend, and managed to buy AmigaOS 3.9 :) The keys Kickstarter begins today at 2pm GMT, and although I wasn't going to replace the keycaps (again), there was something that really caught my eye on the advertising for the project, so that might happen lol Hopefully, there will be something more interesting here soon!

Edit: Just backed the project for a set of Lukhash Black SE key caps, because they're very pretty.

I've done a little power mod this evening... (Edit: badly, Keir corrected this abomination for me later lol)

To go with these...

And then in a short while I'm going to start the hunt for a bigger accelerator :)

I decided to trim the lower RF shield to the absolute minimum so that it won't get in the way of any future upgrades:

IMG_0656.jpg

And did a little fire-up test now that I'm comfortable that the power mod was done correctly - first time I've fired it up with the Ratte in place too (which was attacked with a file for quite some time):

IMG_0657.jpg

Now I really can't do anymore until my case turns up lol
