well finaly rebuilt my pc with the mobo I swaped for the ST but I am finding that the 2 GeForce 8600 GTs in sli mode are not really up to what I want/need

I`m sorta thinking of getting a second hand 9800 as my buget is £30 to £40. So any one got any suggestions plz

merlin is selling a nice gtx260 it'll do your system proud :-)

9800's are basically the same as 8800's iirc with support from a newer revision of directx, a gtx260/280 would be a nice increase.

+1 to the 260 i upgraded to these when i had 8800 in sli

Yeah I'm running a gtx260 in my rig , it's good for crysis 3, etc...
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.5; en-gb; HTC_DesireHD Build/GRJ90) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1

A Geforce GTX 260 or a Radeon 4870 for that price (possibly even a Radeon 4890)... Both have similar performance and both support DirectX 10 (or 10.1 for the Radeon). What PSU are you using? Some of the older cards can be a bit power hungry!

I would second a 4870. I had one for a long time and it performed really well. Upgraded to a 6950 more recently though.

But most cards from that generation (nvidia or ATI) run fairly hot and need quite a bit of power (190-300W under load), whereas the current generation run much cooler, need less power, and are faster. But you pay for the privilege.

I would recommend you have at least a 500W PSU with 80% efficiency and is about to deliver at least 300W to the 12V rail.

Don't think about GeForce 9600/9800. If You think about playing on games, those cards make no sense today. Go into GTX 260/280 or something better + 500W PSU (at least).

I'm using a corsair 430w psu with my 260 which has been folding for over 2 years solid @100% load with no problems

An overloaded PSU can work fine for quite some time, but then suddenly go pop. A better quality one I would expect about 2 years.

I would personally be concerned running a setup these days with a PSU that small and under constant load. The smallest PSU I would use is 500W with an 80% rating, and then that would only be if it were a setup with a CPU drawing under 100W, a single graphics card and one HDD. For anything more I like to know the PSU has some headroom so it isn't constantly under its maximum load, so generally go for 700W.

Something people don't realise puts a big load on a PSU are multiple HDDs.

It's also worth remembering that older CPUs and GPUs tend to draw more than the current generation.

hi harrison

the system is just for gpu folding using a e5200 and 1 40gb ide hd and 1gb ddr2 ram nothing more
it has a corsair 430w hx psu

my other folders have i5 750 with 2 x 460s and corsair 750tx and a i5 750 with a single 460gtx with corsair 520hx psu

and my main system has i5 2500k with a ssd 4 hds a 660gtx using corsair 520hx psu

they all fold on gpus fine

If you are folding using the GPU version, then whist the CPU won't be under full load, it does run the GPU at 100% though, so the PSU will be under strain. Just don't be surprised if it suddenly does expire.

Ahh, similar concept to seti@home, thanks dude

Np john all most all interesting threads go OT at some point

the question still stands

I ended up getting a GTX650 for round the 90 squids mark, mainly cos it came with some world of tanks codes, fee gold n stuff for a game I play almost every day, wich reminds me I still got an invite code if any one wants try world o tanks out or even world of planes, dought u get any planes but u be able use the gold not that thers much of it

usually my budget for buying new pc stuff is around the 100 squid mark so if theres anything which is at least 50% better than the 650 plz let me know

John your a monster folder how long u been doing it now also how many septate cpu/gpu `s u got doing it ?

tempted by the 580 but 244W at Maximum GPU Power is a lot of juice especilay if it doing that on and off all day, obviously that max draw at peak times. So I guess that gives me a base start from. For my needs ie world of tanks i might even get way with not running it at full tilt but just underclock it a bit

so do points mean prizes just like they do in just a minute :)

folding @ home is just fun for bragging rights stuff for us people.
but it does some great calculations for the scientific world, Still yet to hear about any huge breakthrough that came because of folding at home.

But the principal is sound.
If every one with a computer helps out with the calculations a lot more can be figured out and cures for things can come from that.
I find it a bit dissapointing that only a few hundred thousand have joined in the scheme though.

When the 8x nvidia cards 1st appeard it seemed like every one that bought one started folding at home just to show off the physx power..
I guess they now stopped.

I still have a ram shackle old pentium D folding away at the old house.
Sure its not gonna rack up any huge points but thats all it does lol 24/7.
