Those anticipating an Xbox '720' reveal at games industry shindig E3 2012 will be disappointed. Microsoft has insisted it will not discuss next-gen consoles at all this year.

Company spokesman David Dennis quashed widespread speculation that the world was preparing for a major console unveiling this summer.

“There will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon,” said Dennis before insisting: “For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360.”

Following the announcement, two unnamed moles said Microsoft is set to squeeze out a least one more year of sales from its current-gen console, Bloomberg reports.

Announcing the next model so soon could hamper such sales, and with Xbox 360s still flying off the shelves, there is little incentive to turn to the future just yet.

Old news mate, but still a bit (tiny bit) disappointing:/

Yep I know but people still hope new hardware will appear

Ah well, refuse to buy another xbox after I've had over 4 360's this cycle all of which had RROD.

Sure M$ did repair 3 of them for me, but, it was such a shocking design flaw.

I don't blame M$ for not rushing out the new machine. I'd try and milk the current tech for all it's worth. They definitely killed off the original Xbox too quickly especially when you see how long the PS2 managed to last.

Ms paid billions to develop and produce the 360 before Sony released the ps3 so I don't blame them either. The cost of the project was huge and as a whole it worked well.

If you think for a minute, the Xbox is 2004 technology being sold in 2012. Not bad.

The ps2 had a long run but commodore beat them with the c64 almost ten years wasn't it. Mind you the 2600 lasted an outrageously long time!

Microsoft paid IBM 1$ bollars for the CPU design , which was already designed by IBM & Sony at time - nice one. Not sure how much ati got but I remember Nvidia trying to get out of the deal on the Xbox 1 . This may of hastened up its down fall? Not sure.

Bollars, is that Indian currency?

It makes sense to maximize at least this year, but it wont be MUCH longer I think. Something new ( not nintendont ) is needed.

Trouble is the xbox hardware is now holding games back big time. The graphics look pretty shocking in this day and age. Mind you PC games are getting better treatment because of it :)

You hit the nail on the head of what is wrong with the games today; too caught up in graphics and production :p the hardware is not holding back the games - gamers are.

A redesigned snes with higher resolution capabilities but mainly 2D based hardware would be awesome, we could finally get back to game companies taking risks with new ideas as game development would not run into the tens of millions. 3D ruined game creating for small studios where all the nifty new ideas came from, now they dont exist the likes of EA have nothing to copy so you get the same games over and over with new numbers stuck on the end of the name.

I'm more than happy with my 360 already and I don't really see how they could make one much better.

They havent had the S moel out for that long, it'd be a bit silly to announce a new one and have everyone sell their shiny new S systems in anticipation, theyd sell no games then either.

even if the 720 was out next week you would have loads of them RROD'ing like a christmas tree  ... typical M$

Hopefully they've learned their lessons with that. It does make me feel a bit iffy about buying into new tech early these days. Especially given early buyers have to pay the most.

the thing with the red lights is, it wasn't just Microsoft - its just that microsoft shifted more units than anyone else and so were exposed to the soldering technique problems.

others were hit hard too,

Sony
Dell
Acer
Apple G5
Nvidia
ATi

any company producing mass production lead free ball solder in 2004 / 5 / 6 /7 had big problems.

infact Dell got sued for saying motherboard failures were customers faults.. misusing the hardware or something. A leaked memo said that 8 out of 10 motherboards would fail and the company would not accept responsibility. Some naughty employee leaked it.but this was capacitor failure in that case

mike.

i would hope they have all learnt there lesson , using unproven or dodgy components,

I did hear that, though I think MS still had a higher average for failures due to their hardware design stressing the weak soldering.

sidling along though... If it was purely the solder, wouldn't this still be happening? Or do they now use different kinds of solder to what they did back then?

If we're talking 360 it was released in the latter part of 2005 not 2004. If Xbox (which I doubt but anyway) that came out in 2001.

That aside, the tech has still aged very well.

Yup and 7 years is a decent amount of time before its successor is released. It seems to be getting longer every generation now.

Looks like Sony may be in line for the more powerful console next gen... The big N has announced theirs, MS is being speculated to be announced and Sony as far as I know havent even hinted yet. Maybe thats what MS is really waiting for...

there was talk early on in the ps3s life of the new model already being worked on as sony themselves felt they made the ps3 underpowered (and no that is not what i think)

in my eyes the 360 has always been in beta stage it has never been tested the right way. I mean my zx spectrum still works to this day yet i have gone through 4 xbox 360's until i gave up the console for good.

I even had a slim and that even gave me the red light.

Funny really when you think the first xbox was built like a tank and i never had any problems with it at all.
