Nothing more "as a gift"

I been quite happy with all my transactions over the last year, and all but one was as gift.

Amibayers are good people to buy from, and yes, life does most certainly get in the way.

Agreed, I had one problem, it was me that was the problem :). But it was a death in the family so I was away from the site. But the guy sent me an email to my paypal address which I always check and after that it was sorted out ASAP.

IMO nothing wrong with "gift". Just wonder, how people traded before paypal?
Simple rules
1)it's too good to be true
2)blury or stock photos
3)can not answer clear on questions
That's the main warnings.

0 feedback... ummm... everyone started while ago with 0 feedback.
Personally i would not trust "another bay" feedbacks, if it's only buyers feedbacks.
That's all, i think.

I won't do Paypal gift..
There are great people here on Amibay, no doubt...

But it's only a small percentage and I (as the buyer) will generall be paying it.
It's built into the price, or I add enough to cover the percentage.

It's for my own piece of mind.

I've skipped auction that say payment by Paypal gift..
My choice... I'm OK with that.

So, I'm OK with people asking.
I just won't do PayPal gift.

Whenever anyone asks, I suggest they shouldn't, just to be safe.

My first attempts at selling stuff here came with a 'payment by Paypal gift only' but after reading some concerns a while back I changed that to offer the option of buyer pays the fees.

Decided it was the best option as the buyer can then decide if they want that little bit of added protection, removes the 'what if' scenario.

Another thing to watch out for on any Bay is the we don't refund postage. (I hate that).
If the item is not as described or faulty the buyer should never foot the bill for postage i.e. receiving or return postage. Even if it meant I would make a loss I would still cover the postage in these cases.

I feel it does however drive up the costs for buyer.

I'm going to start looking into bank transfers, as am assuming it's similar idea as the old cheque.

From a personal point of view I allow whoever is buying from me to pay in the method they feel most comfortable with.

If I am buying then I always 100% send the money as a Goods payment and pay the exrtra on the fees myself, or if it is a small value or someone I have traded with before then I may pay via BT.

So the buyer pays a few quid or less for the added protection - that's fine with me, and it's buyers choice as much as sellers.

That's like sending cash in the mail except you're sure the seller gets it. You can be damn sure you'll never get it back unless it's extremely big amounts and it's a case of real embezzling. Cross border it's also a lot more expensive!

I had noticed that on assemblergames :)

At least you get the payment amount right. Everyone elses seems to send too little.

Ive never liked bank transfers. It just seems stupid giving your bank details to someone  so I dont go near any listings which only accept bank transfers.

With Paypal, I always say "payment by gift or buyer pays the fees". And by pays the fees I mean they send it as a payment for goods and opt to pay the fees, not a gift payment with 4% or whatever on top.

Well that's one way of looking at it ;)

Lately, I have decided to just "give" an extra 5% to help the seller with the paypal fees and just mark the payment honestly as 'Goods" - This way everyone is happy and if something happens, we are both covered. I look at it as a common curtisy,-even if the seller does not request it.

Thats I nice idea although 4% should cover most Paypal fees. I tried to set an example of offering to split to the Paypal fees 50/50 as I feel the service is equally beneficial to the buyer and seller.

The problem is I don't do enough trading to make a good example. Now, if I could get the legendary "Mr. Fitz" to back me up it would be rocket booster example! ;) I think for the few who had problems with Paypal in Gift it's always a case of "Once burned twice shy".

The same, unless it's very small amounts. I use http://ppcalc.com/ btw and don't think I've ever been off.

Stiff upper lip, and all that

ppcalc seems to provide the correct numbers indeed.

The formula I've deduced for the amount X a buyer is to send for "goods" payment is

X = 100 * (NA + FF) / (100 - PF)

rounded up to two decimal places

where:

NA = the net amount the seller is to receive
FF = the fixed fee
PF = the percentage fee (without the %)

This seems to comply with Paypal's results (and ppcalc's calculations).

The funny part is that, according to this formula, the Fixed Fee becomes part of the Net Amount and is therefore also augmented by the Percentage Fee. So much for a "Fixed Fee"!

Good point!

Wait, so PayPal don't have a button for "let me pay for this and I cover the fee" when I'm a buyer? I'm sure they used to have that.

I've only paid by gift payments with PayPal for my Amibay purchases. One was a payment of £400 for a fancy PC from Gouldin.

I suppose if Gouldin was a cutthroat mercenary type, he could have taken the money and run, but I always do a bit of checking and he had a genuine reason for selling his PC for a low price. I still feel guilty for paying so little, but that's beside the point!

I absolutely despise PayPal's fees. What I really, truly despise is selling something of worth on eBay for a friend of mine, losing a percentage in fees to eBay and then losing another percentage in fees for the privilege of withdrawing the funds from PayPal to give to my friend (who doesn't use PayPal and probably never will).

Ya know I'm getting a little bored of Paypal...

Would anyone like to meet in a disused airfield sometime for a transaction with a brief case? Some bikini wearing women wearing shades and some tough guys with tommy guns on the look out?

I mean, there would be no need for gift, 5% or anything. Just coolness and a bit of retro feel  Don't worry, my guys only load their guns with jellybabies :D

Nothing personal Bad_Ad, just always pay via Goods payment on the off chance that if there is a problem that Paypal *might* and I use that term loosely, might actually be able to help out in some way.

Would rather have a small chance of recourse than none.

If I was one of those guys I'd run out of ammo before anything went down... Omnomnomnomnom...

I think you'll find the fees involved in that kind of transaction far outweighs paypals:p
