I like the extension cable so I don't have to screw around in the back of the computer. My 500 is on a desk with a keyboard shelf, Pull the shelf out to have access to the 500
Right now, I set my Amiga up on my small dining table but then again I rarely eat at it anyway. Mostly it stays put away in a rubbermade tote (keeps it cleaner from dust) except for the monitor. This is how it's sitting out right now.
I may end up not having much use for the plipbox until/unless I get an accelerator for my A500, or at least a 3.1 ROM. I have it nicely set up so I can easily softkick it to 2.0 or 3.1, but it has a physical 1.3 ROM. However, softkicking to 3.1 is considerably slower, even with the large RAM expansion in the GVP unit. Since I have to keep WB 1.3 installed, but softkicking to 3.1 gives features half way installed on the HDD from when it had WB 2.0 and WB 3.1 in the past. Plus the 3.1 ROM features. It's strange and hard to explain.
I need to keep an eye out for a ROM switcher I guess.
I received mine yesterday. After much fighting with AmiTCP and finding various needed libraries and things, it's working fine. (Albeit slow, it's an A500 68000 7MHz after all! Plus I'm soft-kicking to KS 3.1 and running WB 3.1 on an extra partition separate from WB 1.3 on dh0: - a very hacky setup but it works)
It actually fits on my A500 without an extension cable, just barely. The USB port touches the case, but it plugs in far enough to work.
If anyone here is interested, I wrote up a guide on how to set up the Plipbox and AmiTCP 3 step by step. It could be useful for people buying DMackey's version as well. (I'm not trying to sell my version here, just thought this config information could help anyone who gets a plipbox in general): http://1drv.ms/1LW6fPt
