Hey Ya'll!

My 40gb PS3 HDD just isn't enough these days, what sort of HDD does it take and is there a special procedure for swapping it out?

I read something about needing to do a full backup/restore or you can get locked out of the system?

My PS3 isn't modded and has the latest Firmware.

Cheers!

Steve.

i was under the impression , you just swapped for another sata drive?

hang on i'll have a look :-)

****The PlayStation 3 is designed to run with 9.5mm high, 2.5-inch SATA hard drives - the exact same models found in most modern laptop computers. As SATA is effectively an open standard, you can pair your PS3 with any device that uses the interface.

Finally, we'll be looking at the causes of long installs and loading times. Ever wondered why Devil May Cry 4 takes 25 minutes to install, when BioShock copies the same amount of data in just 10? In this feature you'll find out why.

If you want to be particularly insane, you can even hook up desktop drives externally and get a full 2TB of storage. The Xbox 360 uses the same standard of drive, but upgrade options are limited as Microsoft has locked down compatibility to very specific HDDs it licenses.

jeez

the xbox is quicker at loading and installing by a long way :-)

Thanks for the info mate, I guess I need to get a 2.5in SATA drive then :roll:

I have every other type of drive here lol, sods law!

@Steve, upgrading the ps3 hard drive is dead easy mate. Takes a standard laptop sata drive.

You just remove the old one, after backing anything up you want to save, and pop in the new one. You will need a copy of your current firmware on a usb stick and it must be in a folder called UPDATE (all in uppercase letters) on the root of the stick.

Then the console will format the drive and set it up for you and then its just a matter of putting your stuff back on.

I did mine about a week ago and went from 120gb to 360gb.

Th PS3 will take any 2.5" SATA hard drive internally unlike its hot running counterpart, it doesnt need to be anything special. Just grab the firmware from the UK playstation website, bung it on a flash drive and have the flash drive in one of the PS3s USB ports when you power on with the new hard drive installed. Theres a folder structure that needs to be perfect on the flash drive for the playstation to see the firmware (don't worry it's something simple like PS3/UPDATE/firmware file sits here) but there's full instructions on the playstation site.

Take note though, if a folder name is in capitals in the instructions it must be IN CAPITALS on the flash drive!

Enjoy your extra space :)

Thanks guys, It was the Firmware bit I was worried about as I'd read you can screw that up and get locked out of the PS3 :o

I'll hit up eBuyer and see what deals they have on 2.5in SATA drives :thumbsup:

Steve.

the firmware bit is easy steve, just download from sony and follow the instructions..

I swapped the 40 GB drive in my PS3 to a 250 GB drive. The drive swapping is pretty much plug an play. You can back up your old drive to an USB drive and then restore it from there.

I think its pretty much impossible to brick a PS3, even if you screw up, it still reads from the USB drives on boot for recovery. I've never heard of anyone bricking one the way some have updating PSPs / routers / PC motherboards etc.

I still have my original 40gb hdd in, then again i dont know if i use the ps3 enough to justify swapping it

@Skellizee

if you get onto Dead Nation, we could take it to the Zombie Hord!

I think trying to save humanity by killing one zombie at a time is always a good thing to do...

especially on Sundays... just after afternoon tea... its more civilized that way =)

Bloody hell, what would you do with 160GB in an Amiga? Is it actually possible to fill it with stuff from so long ago, the average game being 1 or 2 SD floppies large (0.7 - 2MB) lol.

Baring in mind that most Amigas cant do MP3s too well without serious levels of accelleration, or video. Thats a lot of applications and games! :lol:

@Zeeetri

Is that one of the ones that you could have had for free recently? My wife totally got little big planet :s
