Question for a1200 users

well, i'm thinking to sell my 500. because I really use my a1200 all the time, because of aga games etc.

question is: all older games can be played on a1200? with some kind of emmulator? I found a disk that was converting a1200 to 1.2rom, but got some bad sector on it and it wont load anymore.

Well not all games can be played smoothly on an A1200 or A4000. There are some minor differences that can cause problems. WHDLoad helps to mitigate some of these, but not all. Due to the fact that a vast majority of Older Amiga games appear to have been written with the 68000 specifically in mind, when you go to a faster processor like the '020, or '030, you can have some issues. And for some reason on an 040 or an 060 you can have major trouble trying to get some software to run. Some will run super fast, others won't start up at all. Please note that this is just the experience that I have had with trying to run older games on my A4000D. Your success may be better than mine. I do stand by WHDLoad as it works quite well, I've only had a couple games not want to function for me.

with the expeception of some VERY old A500 games, (and when I say some, I mean less than a handful) WHDLoad roxx... while there are some compatability issues with 040's (mainly down to MMU and cache: these can be turned off)

Where on the other hand the 060 seems more compatible that than the 040, against a very select few of old games have issues but this can be alleviated by turning off the cache and MMU features of the CPU while running the game (this is down by changing the icon tool types... very easy =))

In a lot of ways, WHDLoad - like every other tool/program; You only get out of it what you put in it...

I have found it tricky to find a games that don't run via WHDLoad and IGame on an 060@60MHz

I vote for you keeping both your A1200 and your A500. You need at least a few Amiga systems to be taken seriously on a forum such as this one anyway. I'm in the double digits, which is ridiculous.

My advice is to keep at least one of each model, too. You never know if one go bad and you need another physical unit to do the rescue (specially if you need a copy of a booting floppy).

I reckon the perfect retro Amiga rig is a 56Mhz 030 1200 with a 4GB CF full of WHDLOAD games and demos hooked up to a new 18.5" LCD monitor powered by and Indivision AGA via HDMI....what more could you need

Ok, there are a few later demos that you won't be able to run (060 only) and also a handful of the last games that will be too slow but most of these are PC ports anyway (eg Quake) so it's not really such a big deal to the average user. An 030 is also the most compatible CPU and less of a hassle to get working in the standard desktop case than an 040/060.

There's also some RTG only productivity software that you won't be able to run using AGA and you can forget about ray-tracing which again is not such a big deal to most people.


And don't even get me started on PPC


So sell that old 500 and go and give your 1200 a big hug

i say keep the 500 for playing all those annoying games on like pinball dreams ,

then when you are on for your record score and something that seems unfair happens and you accidentally in a fit of rage throw your amiga at the wall,

you wont feel so bad as the 1200 is still ok

I say keep your A500. Every Amigan should have one in their collection no matter what other Amiga they are spending more time on. You will also get more wow factor when you show friends all the cool music demos, ect that came out on just 1 or 2 floppy disks.

In my opinion, WHDLoad is the best.

In anyway, I have one A600 1.2, 1.3 to play these very old (ancient ) games from floppy...... very happy with this solution...
