This has triggered a question in my head; how many females (apart from SdG ) do you know, that are actively involved in the retro scene?

no, they are mostly into NDS and the Sims, but my ex once remembered that she had a Gameboy when she was little, but thats about it.

and does it really matter if we have tons of girls or not? i thought retro was the focus point here, not genus.

LOFL, yea i recall that one.

I'm not a huge fan of the green stuff myself but yea,

Heather is the only one I've seen active.

Sorry heather didnt mean to imply you're the only one active on the green stuff incase thats how anyone read it . I was going back on topic to imply that you're the only female retro gamer i've seen active on the site hehe. Except bebek ofcourse, but yea...

And no it doesnt matter Luz, but it is the point of this particular thread :p, well the scene in general anyways...

Sociological Point Of View

Hi Folks
Just discovered this thread and have been busy reading it until I reached, well, here. :coffee:

Yes it's very true that computing in general and retro computing in particular is almost nearly a male thing. As to why this is, the only explanation I can come up with is that women like to see what their computer can do rather than be interested in how it actually works.

This is important because looking back to my own experience, I was not too interested in what CPU was inside a computer, or what add-ons you could buy for it. All I was interested in was drawing, and as you all know, most Amigas came bundled with Deluxe Paint. It was only because of that I opened up a present in 1989 and found a nice new A500 inside.

This is were it started, later on, bit by bit I started to learn more of what was actually going on under that keyboard and again when 3D modelling started to appear this gave me the final push to really find out how an Amiga could be improved to do the things I wanted it to do. Oh and the games of course! I was lucky I guess.

Back in the early 90s, I knew quite a few girls who regularly used their brother's Amigas. Girls just didn't tend to be given computers at Christmas by their parents because it was seen as "too technical" and so would be a waste of money for an underused expensive "toy", but arnt all toys a waste of money if you think about it in those terms?

My point is girls were not really given any incentives to get into computers outside of possible work based training and if you don't get someone interested when they are young and show them it can be fun, there is very little chance of them ever being interested later on, because the conditioning (determined by what society sees are appropriate gender roles) has set in by then.

This is why (for example) my niece, when she was visiting me had her laptop with her to do her homework on. She took a break and decided to try out Deluxe Galaga AGA on my old 1200, she loved it! At the end of the day Amiga Forever was installed and now when she comes round, it's "Auntie have you got any more rp9 images for me to install"?

Of course today it's very different, lots and lots of women have PeeCees, because of social networking (women love to chat!), email and of course the big one, clothes shopping! :p

Just my thoughts folks! :)

^^^^ +1

Everything Geraldine said is spot on! I really enjoyed electronic stuff before I even saw my first real computer. Even after I expressed interest, I still ended up having to buy one myself. :)

From a general technology standpoint, I've worked in all the spectrums.
From there being no female techs to my last job where, at one point, our team was 3 women and me.
My current job, the tech group is about 30 people with 4 women.
I was just on an interview panel and we interviewed 8 people, no women.
(I don't know if any applied, we only get the "filtered thru personel" applicants.)

As for retro tho, until I came here and saw SDG, I can't think of anyone I've intereacted with who was into retro computers/technology really. None of the tech women I've known/worked with expressed an interest in retro technology.

OK, was I the only one who thought "Novell Directory Services?" ;-)

Erm, no, as per my other thread where I talk about Novell script hacking...

What about Jeri Ellsworth? She has to be on the female retro enthusiast list!!

As for Jeri, I thought about her, but even tho she's probably only an hour away from here (I think), I've never met her or run into her online.

Definately retro tho!!

Well I have seen a few woman on club days back in the 90's, but these were few to 1.
But so far here in the Netherlands I haven't seen much online.

Are you married, Desiv? (I guess not, but that's just a guess)

There's no woman alive that wouldn't associate 'retro' with 'old'; it's like telling her that her 'bum does look big in that dress', you get to live for just 5 nanoseconds.......

I usually plead the 5th Amendment to those questions, as they are classic no-win ones....here's an example.

Her: Does my bum look big in this?
Him: No....
Her: You're just saying that to shut me up!!

Checkmate in two moves....your dinner is in the dog/bin (delete as applicable)

Her: Does my bum look big in this?
Him: Yes....
Her: You're saying I'm fat!!

Deaf and dumb tea, followed by death by multiple blows from a blunt object (rolling pin)....your dinner is still in the dog/bin (delete as applicable)

See what I mean?

Actually, yes I am and very happily. Have been for a while...

There's no woman alive that wouldn't associate 'retro' with 'old';

Really? I know several who understand what "retro" is although they aren't into retro tech themselves.
I wouldn't say that to a non-techie, but we're talking techie women here.

I have a lot of respect for Jeri and would assume she knows what retro means... After all, she's not just into C64's but also Pinball big time.

Desiv, I think you may have had a catastrophic sense of humour failure. :)

It's been known to happen..
Generally on days ending in the letter Y...

Or when I'm busy working on documentation....

Man I hate that...

Mea Culpa!

Not to worry chap, it happens to the best of us.

I too am suffering from a massive sense of humour failure at this exact moment.

AmiCDFS, it's not funny in the slightest. :censored:

I feel like weeping. :p
