Hi all, received a Sega Nomad today. This was purchased and forwarded to me by Skydivingirl. Thank you Heather :)

So i was excited to receive this and have waited for the post man every day since i was told it had been posted. It arrived this morning and first thing i did was fire it up with a Megadrive II PSU. After a few minutes the power went off and i found i had to wiggle the cable to make it work again. Knowing the cable is fine i opened up the nomad. There was very little solder around the DC jack. Resoldered and power was restored.

I will be replacing the LCD in this machine with a new modern replacement as detailed in a lot of guides around the web but until that arrives from China i thought i'd perform the rest of the mods available for this machine.

Enabling Master System Mode.

This requires you to solder a wire from pin 45 of the Asic chip to B30 of the cartridge slot. The connection points of the Asic are very small but this wasn't too difficult.

Enabling the Mode Button to switch between English/Japanese

This requires you to cut the connection between JP1 and then solder a wire from the inner pad of JP2 to the middle of the mode button PCB. Booting the nomad as normal will start the machine in USA. Hold the Mode Button while booting will switch the region to Japanese.

Once the new screen arrives from China i will update this thread with picture of the replacment.

Thanks for looking

Very nice!
I assume the new screen is million times better than the old one?

yep, a tremendous improvement on the screen... this will be a killer nomad , pimped and with Mega-ED! :)

Update time

New screen arrived this morning. Despite ordering the same screen as shown in the article (see third post) i did in fact receive a different model :(

It works and is installed but doesn't seem to like PAL/50hz. When switched to 50hz all i get is messed up colours and rolling screen

Anyway since i'm impatient and the likelyhood of getting a sucessful resolution by complaining being low i decided to just get on with the install.

All installed and working fine and looing a lot brighter and more vivid than the original. The only issue as you may be able to see is i didn't quite line it up properly (see Sonic left edge). I lined it up square and the case is on a slight angle :picard I may open it and try and reposition but for now its working and I'm happy with how good it looks.

Since it doesn't like 50Hz i removed the mods done so it looks stock again and since i will be using it with the Mega Everdrive it shouldn't actually be a problem for me.

Pics side by side with the original and then installed and put back together.

Wow! Very nice. I should try a replacement screen for one of my GameGear units. It would be much nicer than just an LED light mod.

Glad to see it's working out well for you!

Heather

Hi Heather, it does look good and i am enjoying the Nomad.

As for the GameGear i don't think anyone has worked out a way to replace the screen yet since it has no tv output to piggyback from. I do believe there is an Australian chap who makes tv out addon boards for GG so i suppose if you fitted that then you could probably replace the screen.

@Justin, thanks mate.

Nice work!

Is there a way to tap straight into the RGB input of these replacement LCDs?

Hi protek, i'm not sure my friend, i just followed most of the guides i found around the net which show taking the signal from the composite video of the AV out connector on the Nomad board.

That is a brilliant screen mate, this would sit very proudly on any Sega fans collection shelf. next time we hit retro revival are you planning to sit that that on the coach! HAHA. brilliant.

Awesome! I'm waiting for my Nomad to arrive from America and I would love to do that mod. But alas i'm crap at soldering and i'd make a mess and ruin it.

Scrappy did it take long to do ? Would you do the screen mod & master system mod ? For a fee of course :)

hi there. I have done this mod but it doesn't seem to work with my master mega converter. please can anyone help. thanks
