I know I've been away from Amigas for quite some time but I've never seen a software failure on the screen as soon as a machine is switched on. Could this be a bad KS Rom?

As long as the machine boots OK after that you're fine. Dunno what machine you're talking about but if that's something like a stock A1200 with a hard drive installed, it's normal, the same happens here sometimes. After powering it up I need to reboot and then it detects the HD and boots from it.

Thank you. It is an A1200. There is no HDD though and it never had one. If this is normal I'll simply ignore it.

no its not normal.

when you say software failure do you get a red or yellow box like below ?

amiga1guru.png

if so then there is a fault of some sort,

On a stock A1200 with a hard drive installed that's the cheap IDE interface at works (hard drive too fast/slow spinning up for the Amiga hardware), as soon as the hard drive is up to speed there should be no crashes anymore. On a bare A1200 though, a crash is abnormal. The number you get in the failure report may indicate what's wrong.

never seen that happen... it usually just goes to the purple boot screen if the drive spins up too slowly..

agreed.

If you get a guru after turning on the machine, it is either a bad ROM or some hardware problem. A slow HDD should not create a guru.

Have you tried re-seating the KS ROMs? Has the machine been re-capped?

Bryce.

I've re-seated the ROMs and installed a CF card adapter. This hasn't happened again since I reassembled the machine. With luck it will never occur again.

Thanks for the advice. It's good to have this community to rely on.

I have seen this happen on occasion! But it went away. Does this happen often????

If it comes and goes, it's usually just a bad connection between the KS ROMs and the cheap-ass sockets that Amiga used. Reseating usually fixes it. My A600 used to do it on occassions until I got fed up and installed proper sockets.

This is what I'm hoping caused the issue. The machine works well now.
