As long as the machine boots OK after that you're fine. Dunno what machine you're talking about but if that's something like a stock A1200 with a hard drive installed, it's normal, the same happens here sometimes. After powering it up I need to reboot and then it detects the HD and boots from it.
never seen that happen... it usually just goes to the purple boot screen if the drive spins up too slowly..On a stock A1200 with a hard drive installed that's the cheap IDE interface at works (hard drive too fast/slow spinning up for the Amiga hardware), as soon as the hard drive is up to speed there should be no crashes anymore

no its not normal.
when you say software failure do you get a red or yellow box like below ?

if so then there is a fault of some sort,
If it comes and goes, it's usually just a bad connection between the KS ROMs and the cheap-ass sockets that Amiga used. Reseating usually fixes it. My A600 used to do it on occassions until I got fed up and installed proper sockets.
