Solid State Drive?

I think 128 would be ok for me but I would prefer 256 but the prices start getting crazy

Indeed. As soon as 256GB SSDs come down to realistic levels I will definitely be getting one.

It would be better if they developed a proper bootable port for SSD - such that it could use a proper 16/32bit memory mode - thus eliminating the CHD's translation of the adapter board.

This would make the devices MUCH faster

I just feel at the moment the SSD on IDE/SATA or even RAID is kinda Hybrid tech to me..... it should be named SSS (S3) Solid State Storage - and given a proper port on the motherboard to connect to - that takes advantage of its near instant seek time and bandwidth.

Well the (limited, but still) testing I've done at work tells me 3Gbps interface is enough for a single SSD, and write speeds on better generation 2/3 SSDs at least are on par with mechanical drives.

Have only used them in Vista/Win7 but supposedly drive alignment needs to be adjusted manually for XP installs, and TRIM also works best with for example Win7 (less wear on the SSD supposedly).

Access times and burst read speed are good, that's for sure.

When I upgraderd from a WD 320GB to my 60GB OCZ Vertex2 the computer felt like new again... Everything feels A LOT snappier..
Read speeds are truly insane compared to mechanical HDDs, programs etc starts almost instantly on the SSD while it could take 10-15 seconds on normal HDD.

60GB is more than enough for my workstation, but then again I'm running Linux where programs are much smaller than on windows...
Larger files etc is stored on the 6TB fileserver...

SSD makes no sense at all as storage drives and should really only be used as system drives..
My laptop is soon getting a SSD too.. and so is my fileservers bootdisk and some of my Amigas.
And in a laptop it makes even more sense with an SSD as 5400rpm HDDs are insanely slow.

i dont know if id want to limit a ssd to usb speeds, but i guess usb 3.0 is pretty fast. "possibly faster than most sata" but a usb 2.0 would not really be that great. and 1.0 dosent bear thinking about.

I've got a OCZ Vertex2 SSD in my Win7 Desktop PC. It's really fast. The best buy ever. But only with Windows7 the SSD was installed correct. When you are using XP or something you have to Set the SSD manually.
