In an effort to stop correcting people in threads (I'm sorry this red mist comes down and I LOSE It)

The top word of this list being my most hated mistake, Hopefully this will be informative as well as amusing.

Respect goes to the foreign English speakers who do a quite remarkable job of writing our language better than most English people.

That looks perfectly legible to me.

Damn the lot of you for mocking my rant!! :tantrum: :soapbox:

One of the most common mistakes is the usage of the words there, they're and their - and that's from those who claim to be able to speak English!

With dyslexia it can be very hard to spot spelling errors and misspellings, even when taking the time to re-read what you just typed. I can tell you it is very annoying and frustrating. Even more so when I know the word I wish to type but can't for the life of me work out how it is spelt. Sometimes I even have to reword a sentence to use a different word to avoid it! And before you say "Google it" or "use a dictionary" that often doesn't work either as sometimes my "version" of a word is so far removed from the real spelling that spell checkers and Google have no idea what I'm trying to find.

One slightly unrelated thing that I do often is type the wrong word when speed/touch typing. The most common one being Think and Thing. Anyone know what the reason/cause of that is? As soon as I read back what I've written I always spot it.

I also sometimes type completely wrong, but correctly spelt words, if I'm typing fast and not looking at what I'm typing or the keyboard. Must be related to the other problem. Does that have a name, and a reason?

In regard to things like there, they're and their, I notice a lot of native English speakers get those and other examples wrong, and all that indicates is that they need a better education, or their schooling system failed them!

A lot of people also seem to have no idea how to use contractions, or for that matter what one is. Did you know that recent recommendations for teaching English was to remove the need for apostrophes from English? How would that improve anything.

The worst for me though is when people post in forums using txt speech. I want to throttle them! And if I get emails with txt speech I don't even bother to reply as the IQ level at the other end can't be too high.

Language is a slow evolving art-form, while we have precepts, concepts and precedents, each generation develops its own idiom. From this spelling and grammar rules of old are generally ignored or abused.

after all, theres lots of fun with

"I Can Haz Cheezburger!"

There is no point getting upset with someone's spelling on a forum... if one does I would suggest taking time and explore some relaxation techniques, in the worse case perhaps talk with their GP for some anti-anxiety tablets.

@Z. That is the best spelling I've seen in one of your posts for a very long time.

;)

I totally agree about txt talk, bad spellings I can handle as I am not great.

BUT who ever invented txt talk should be shot, my niece always sends me messages in txt talk and I really struggle to work out what is being said.

I love the spell check ability on my mac. But making words go in the right order is not one of my string points. If I read it back and it makes sense to me it ll do :D

I think we should be enforcing correct use of apostrophes and issuing infraction points for those that use them incorrectly; that being said, there is probably a lot more room for correct usage of punctuation in general, such as commas, semi-colons and so on....

I was born on a deprived council estate in Manchester, yet I can converse in spoken and written English to a more-than-fair standard; if I can achieve this, surely there's little excuse for poor grammar from others.

I have always tried hard to use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, as I feel that it is both polite and sets an example to others. The quality of English language, grammar and punctuation has declined rapidly in recent years, and I do wonder how long it will be before mobile phone text speak will be acceptable, as a means of replying to examination questions...

I think it's truly shocking, that a lot English people cannot use correct written and spoken English, to the same standard as other European countries.. :(

I think your spell-checker needs a spell-checker.....

and can people PLEASE stop saying 'basically' in every day life, in every bloody conversation!

God it does my head in! I don't want 'basically' I want expansion and DETAILS! No 'basically' stuff!! Gah!

I'm firing up the Delorean and going back to Shakesperean times with my A500.

I don't claim to be perfect myself, It's when I see words that for the life of me I can't understand how people keep misspelling! The whole lose, loose thing has been slowly building over time to the point where it is seen so much I think everyone just assumes thats how it is spelt
