Hi all. Sorry in advance for such a long post but I would like anyones input.

Recently I'm becoming more and more tempted to buy into the Wii U. I'm not too bothered by most third party games on there, and I must admit I'm a Sega guy originally so I'm not overly enthousiastic about Mario and Zelda, but they do look good on the U. I have the Mario 25th Anniversary collection on the Wii, as well as New Super Mario Brothers, both Mario Galaxys and Wind Waker on the GC and I admit I haven't yet got around to playing any of them. It's not like I bought them brand new, just cheap pickups as and when. I do prefer the look of the 3D Marios as they look great, the original 2D ones are too slippery and frustrating for me. I do want a Wii U, and I will get one some time, but if I wanted to invest now, I would have to sell a few machines first (namely my 2600 collection, Atari 800XL/SIO2SD, Speccy/DivIDE+) and I admit I haven't got around to playing those machines much so far at all & I don't like the idea of selling them, you know how it is.

The thing is, a lot of Wii games went up in price as soon as the Wii was discontinued and you are at the mercy of lucky pickups or ebay. I don't want to be in the same position with the Wii U as god only knows how much ebay monsters will be asking for Wind Waker HD and Smash etc. I'm not sure if the "idea" of owning one is looking more attractive than actually playing the games, since I haven't even played this gens 3D Marios..So should I invest now, or later? I don't want to be caught out if Nintendo suddenly desides to discontinue it if I leave it a couple of years..

Also, this brings me to thinking about Nintendo in general. I know MS won't leave Halo alone, and there's millions of CoD games etc, but I find it frustrating, and a little worrying, that Nintendo keep bringing back Mario in yet more 3D forms, more Mario Kart, charging a fortune for Wind Waker HD, and now Smash Bros, amongst others. What outlook goes Nintendos next console have, as surely they can't last on their own IPs forever? How many times can you reinvent them? (and please don't think I'm a Sega guy dissing Nintendo because I like nintendo as well.)

I got a wii u about a year ago and Im definitely pleased with it, I like using the handheld and I'm happy with how the games look and play ;)

You could just wait until the next Nintendo console comes out and then get a Wii-U when they are half the price, the main Nintendo games will always still be for sale new as long as the console is. For example you can still buy New Super Mario Bros on the DS new and that came out like 8 year ago. I fully intend on buying a Wii-U myself though and won't be waiting that long.

we got a Wii U a few years back, brilliant console, small, quiet, good graphics , easy to use and best of all it plays Wii games unlike the new PS4 / Xbox One.

I dont have an Xbox One for 2 reasons,1st I cant justify the price for 1 or 2 games that I like and my large xbox 360 library of 150 or so games would be useless unless I clutter the shelf under my TV with 2 xbox consoles and 2 sets of controllers etc. bah humbug,

The Wii U replaced the Wii and have enjoyed Wind Waker HD , Pikmin & Mario games, (OH and unlike the PS4 / Xbox One the Wii U works very well with a standard Wii Component cable at 1080p freeing up a much needed HDMI port :D )

Personally, I think they're great. Zelda and Mario can more than hold their own against Sonic. Maybe not the original couple on the Megadrive which were simply mind-blowing, but Mario and Zelda certainly improved as they migrated to 3D.

Also, Mario kart 8 is a must-have title.

Whether to buy one now though as they're getting on a bit: If I were you then I'd get one if I found a great deal. Otherwise, I'd wait for the next Nintendo console and be involved in it from the start.

The problem with nowadays consoles is that once the online features are gone, you're left with a pretty crippled console. I certainly would advise against anyone purchasing an original Wii for this very reason.

Nintendo just kinda dropped it like a hot potato.

It's certainly the most played with console in our house. The games are generally of good quality, but the main selling point for me is the backward compatibility with Wii titles. I appreciate that Nintendo have kept this facility, with GameCube titles playable on Wii, and Wii titles in Wii U. Hopefully they'll keep that up with the next gen. It certainly sets them apart from Sony and MS in that respect.
Although I specifically hunted out a 60GB PS3 just so that I can play PS2 titles on it.
The backward compatibility may also go some way to explain why some Wii titles are priced as they are second hand though, which is unfortunate.

I really enjoy my Wii U. As r0jaws said, the backwards compatibility with the Wii is also great. I've been playing many of the old Wii games on the Wii U because they look quite nice on there.

I've ordered mine today, Nintendo Wii U 32GB New Super Mario Bros and New Super Luigi Bros Premium Pack from Amazon for £219 - good price I thought. Wanted to get the Mario Kart pack but you cannot buy New Super Luigi U for love nor money new anywhere and I want it on disc not a download.

Are the old skool MAME games still avail through the Wii U online store? That's going to be the biggest selling point for me!

Hmm, I'll make it my mission next year to get one then. I should play the games I have from Nintendo first mind. Thanks for the insight people, suppose I could sell the Wii when the time comes.

IF I was Nintendo, I would make next Gen console ready for 2019 to sealed Sony and Mircosoft Thunder as they would release it in 2020 or 2021

The Next Nintendo Spec would be

16 Cores CPU 1.8GHZ each
16GB Ram
Geforce GTX whatever is

That would Blow PS 4 and XBOX One away!

If you happen to have mostly enjoyed the game libraries of Nintendo's wide-audience consoles (e.g., NES, SNES, Game Boy, DS, Wii), but mostly didn't enjoy the libraries of their narrow-audience machines (which not coincidentally are their least-selling ones - the N64, and the GameCube), you probably won't enjoy the Wii U either - it's very much in that vein.

Yes, you can run homebrew on the Wii U (via Wii mode) but you need a specific game from the exploit list (I used Lego Indiana Jones) and have to follow the Wii U homebrew instructions explicitly - or you risk bricking Wii mode. Be careful!
