OK, I've stepped in to tidy up this thread. Can I please remind folks to keep it civil! Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but ad hominem attacks against fellow members won't be tolerated.

I am android user and have used various Android devices since the very first. My biggest gripe is the utter crap that manufacturers and networks force into their Android installs. Xperia Play on T-Mobile for example. 5 different apps, just for buying more apps! We only need one, goddammit!

Samsung seems better and there was not too much junk on my Tab2 7 and the Note 8 is OK too, but by far the loveliest is my Nexus 4 with its clean vanilla Android. A joy to use! Those who complain of slow and unstable Android devices should try a Nexus branded one before they give up in despair.

I can't comment on iOS, but having experienced iTunes I'd be pretty unhappy being forced to use it to manage my device.

The best mobile device is one that doesn't p155 you off personally, so it doesn't really matter what other people think. If Android fills you with the rage and iOS doesn't then the correct device for you is an Apple. So long as we're all agreed that Windows Phone is terrible :p

It's much like a car. People find the device and os they like and enjoy using the most and stick with it. Many like iOS, and many others like Android.

I'm firmly in the Android camp and love Android 4.4 on my Nexus 7, and also on the Nexus 4. The untouched vanilla Android from Google is brilliant.

In contact I hate what some third party manufacturers do to Android. The worst for me is Samsung. My wife had the original Galaxy S and that was annoying because of Samsung's changes to the OS. And she currently has a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" tablet and I also dislike their customisation to the OS. In comparison I've always liked the more subtle and conservative changes Sony make to their version.

For those that have bad experiences of Android, I bet it was an older version. Up to Android 2.3 the OS was definitely still playing catchup with iOS to some degree and some parts of the OS made it a bit annoying. Also the older hardware was never powerful enough to make for a really smooth experience or good stability. This would have put many people off from buying another Android device. That all changed with Android 4.1 onwards. The OS matured into something really nice. Gone are the annoying bits from 2.3 and it works really nicely now. I would also say Android finally superseded iOS and is far more versatile and ahead now. It makes iOS look and feel quite dated.

And before you ask, yes I've used iOS. Friends have owned iPhones since the beginning so I get to play around with them, and my wife's school uses iPads and I have to regularly use them to look for new apps to aid her class teaching. And it just feels so clunky and dated these days. Something I especially hate is the keyboard. No Swype typing is horrible and it's so slow to type. And I hate the fact all of the app icons are on the main home screens. Much prefer Android's approach of having then in an applications directory, and being able to pick and arrange ones I want on my homescreens, alongside widgets.

I agree to disagree with that. :p

I honestly don't get all the dissing the WP platform is getting. The UI is fresh and pretty straightforward. Sure a few settings may require an adjustment in the way of thinking after Symbian but it gets the job done. The application portfolio may be smaller than others but maybe I can settle for one or two versions of the same app instead of umpteen. It's also pretty simple to make applications for it.

I've got an Android pad so I'm familiar with it and I've had tastes of iOS and I'm perfectly ok with those too. ATM I'm a WP8 user and quite happy with that.

my 2c.....i have a few devices....my main phone is an SGS3...previous to that i had an SGS2 and before that an SGS1. i previous to that had a iPhone 3GS, and, have and iPad1 64GB 3G and a Asus Transformer Prime.

...so what do i think. says me writing this on a mac...not overly a fan of the iPhone, not so much from a functionality perspective as apps are good and the iOS (although iOS7 is terrible on my wifes iPhone4S) but the closed ecosystem is what does not work for me (via my wife) and the iTunes lock in is bloody awful. PS iTunes works far better on a Mac than it does on Windows FYI.

i like my SGS3 but i find the OS rather kludgy - the HTC seems to make alot more sense (remember mine is the Samsung port vs the HTC port) but from a phone and text perspective it does the job rather well.

as far as tablets so I have both Ipad1 my daughter has an iPad5 for school and i have the Asus TF Prime. i would not buy a tablet ever again - as an IT guy they serve nothing but to aggravate me when I am looking for putty or a CMD prompt.

i have jailbroken my ipad and been down the cydia route. yes thats nice and gives you a bit more freedom outside of the apple ecosystem, similarly i've rooted my android for little to no benefit.....

all that said i think my next phone will be a windows8 phone. they all do a similar thing with a good end user experience, but, being a windows user having the same experience on a phone would be kinda handy.

My experience....

I would never even consider buying an iPhone (mainly because they are way overpriced and locked to iTunes, oh and the screen is too small).

Android's far from perfect though. My first Android phone was an HTC One S, great hardware but with HTC's little enhancements to the OS it was buggy and a bit of a pain to use. I've now brought a 16GB Nexus 4 outright for $300 (AU), very nicely put-together phone running stock Android and a steal at this price. Unfortunately I've found that even stock Android has some annoying/missing features, still better than HTC's effort though.

I couldn't stand to use that horrible looking Metro UI so I guess I'll just have to stick with my Android for now.

I guess the real beauty of Android is that if you don't like the standard OS you can customize the crap out of it, even installing new ROM's if you want to take it that far.

ironically, my wife tried to sync daughters iPad via iTunes *running on windows OS - to her SSD - which is full. so after pointing it to my NAS to backup to ; will only backup applications, but not photos.

one agonisingly **** thing about this - iTunes is a piece of **** which does not run on windows to save its life.

now i will no doubt try to debug the piece of **** until the end of night so i will be dead at work tomorrow.

and why is this, because the ipad has to go back to school to be updated for some sort of MDM over the school holidays (when the kids could use it for other purposes, of course)
