Ubuntu 14.04

Has anyone switched to the new Ubuntu 14.04 yet ?

I have to admit although i have tried making the switch way before this time I always had some problems and went back to Windows 7. Ubuntu 14.04 on the other hand has worked right from the start and has not given me any problems. Even running games with full 3D like Left 4 Dead 2 has worked without me even installing any drivers.

Its quick, smooth and I have to admit that its the best version of Ubuntu in years. I know there are other buntu distro's, but I think I will keep this one.

No more Windows for me at long long last.

I've been installing Mint 16 like mad over the last couple of weeks. It's now running on my Mother in Laws, my fathers, my wife's and my laptop. It's been a doddle to install every time, taking much less than an hour including updates. My last windows install took over 24 hours!
Everything just works out of the box, streaming, mp3 playback, 3d drivers, wireless the lot. Even wireless printers! I feel like Linux has finally turned a corner, and with XP being unsupported and my family and friends worried about the security implications it's been a no brainer.
The Cinammon desktop is simple, fast and clean and is familiar enough for even my dad to get to grips with it quickly. All the software that they are used to is available as I have been converting them onto Open source software for years, so the transition is relatively painless.

One of the biggest plus points has been the lack of maintenance required. The windows installs required regular Virus and Spyware scans, system clearouts, de-fragmenting and periodic pruning of the startup programs to get rid of all the gumph that would invariably be installed alongside other software to bloat out the system.

Linux is definitely the way forward from now on as far as I am concerned.

I've just finished a dist-upgrade for my Lubuntu.
The process could not be completed, I rebooted and everythng was ok. I went back to "System upgrader" and it detects an incomplete situation:



When I trigger the "partial upgrade" it says there's nothing to updates.

Usual Ubuntu woes .... tomorrow I'll start googling...

I'll be updating my Xubuntu installs (it's my go-to distro on my two x86 boxes) later. Never had any issues to date, and don't expect any now.

That said, I need to run a backup of my stuff first, though - going into an upgrade without doing so, regardless of my confidence in it, would be monumentally stupid.

I have bought my first PC in 1997 without OS, and I have installed Linux Debian. Since this time all my computers (except Amigas!) run under Linux. I have 2 mediacenters which run under Ubuntu with XBMC Standalone, and all other PCs run under Linux Mint 13 and 15 with XFCE.

I don't understand people who lose their time with Windows...
"I have installed Norton, blablabla...", "Me, I prefer Avast, blablabla", etc, etc, etc...

Me I have make the choice to let the power of my computers for the softwares I use. Everybody at home is happy to use Linux. The last laptop I bought was for the birthday of my wife. My son has said me. "Dad, let the computer starting under Windows8 to see how it's sucks!". And it was... Thirty minutes after, the laptop was under Mint with all needed softwares and runs perfectly since.

My son (13 years old) has his own PC. Onto, he has Linux and... Windows 7 for some games. But since Valve has ported Steam under Linux, he uses really less Windows and prefer to play under Linux. He waits for the release of SteamOS to kill definitively Windows.

I've used both sets of OS's each have their uses windows is a well polished well hacked OS which has seen vast changes over the last 25 years, The same can be said of Linux I had my first Distro working on an Old 386 with 4MB ram but until it supports the games I want without wasting hours and hours trying to get a windows environment to first work then run the games without Lag, it for me is still just a toy to play with from time to time.
Windows 8 made some big strides but also some massive mistakes, its just following in the strides of all Microsoft development we have had Windows 95, Windows ME, Windows Vista and now Windows 8 they all sucked and had major problems but what came after people still love and use Windows 98SE, Windows XP Windows 7 Ive bought them all and until Linux becomes the developers platform of choice will continue to.

Linux is a fantastic platform but its not seen outside of the server platform as cutting edge or the norm which is why we keep seeing new titles only on windows, It needs steam to find a way to emulate windows within its software running on Linux then you might finally see the end of Microsoft but waiting forever for a game I want to play to be ported is a nightmare.

I wonder how many serious Linux programers or support staff use Amibay would be interesting to see!

Steam is making some serious inroads onto Linux, and when SteamOS launches proper, I imagine we will see a surge in support from developers.
I still dual boot Linux/ Win7 but usually only use Win7 for games. Everything else is on Linux, and if Steam supports the games I have on the platform I prefer, then I will stick with Linux.

It was the same for me.
A pure Debian distro is the best choise for a stable system.

Running ubuntu, debian testing and unstable for the last 10 years, I can say: debian unstable is much more stable and bug-free than ubuntu stable (release). Lubuntu 13.04 is cool as a rescue USB pendrive.

Turns out, I just needed to trigger an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade to find out there were some leftovers.
Running a apt-get autoremove solved the issue.

Man, the command line is never a letdown...

Got this MacBook Air and so does the misses which is a bliss.. Moved away from Windows in 2005 and do not regret.

got this SSD based Low Spec PC with 4GB and AMD ATI card.. Windows 7 worked but as always.. Two weeks later it got slower and slower and albeit protection, it got infected and issues stacked up.. So I went Ubuntu 13.10.. Saucy Salamander or whatever.. Buggy as hell.. Hated it but left it for what it was.. Hated it then so much I ordered an iMac to replace the machine. Did upgrade to 14.04 but still kernel panics and thus total freezes.. I am done with Ubuntu as it is too much hassle.

i heard about Mint being the better solution.. But since I like to have Photoshop and some other apps which are windows/Mac only without the need to use an emulator, I ain't going to try that now.. No point.

I always use command line.
It is a good habit to kill X server before dist-upgrade.

Normal... Ubuntu and other derived-distro take Debian (and to have newer packages versions, not the stable version), add their touch (with their bugs)...
A Stable version of Debian is released only when every has been corrected. The other distributions want to be the most used... This is the racing to be the first... but not the best.


And YES...Shell is my friend... since CLI!

ubuntu is a mix of debian unstable and experimental(!)
the packages are frozen just few weeks before the release.
how can you thoroughly test (experimental) distro in couple of weeks???

MINT is gaining momentu against Ubuntu.

After years of Slackware I've decided to switch to a distro to just have "the job done". It's not fun anymore compiling all the time, I have other things to do (e.g. work) with my PC.
However I still can't get used to heavy footprint desktop managers (KDE, Gnome, Unity) so I like Lubuntu because it's sleek and responsive (see my sys stats while I'm writing):



Can I configure Mint having this philosophy too? Can I have a APT-based Linux distro with a small footprint on my hardware?

The last Linux I installed was redhat many years ago after reading this I will try debian to see how things have moved on.
