valuation for a Dell Server.

Hi all, i'm generally looking for a valuation for a Dell Server.
I have been offered my mates old server for £100 and would like to know if its worth it.
It is a Dell Poweredge SC1430.
2x Xeon 3.0Ghz 64bit dual Core cpu's
4Gb Ram
3x72Gb SAS (serial attached scsi) HDD's
Powervault 100T Dat Tape drive
However no operating system installed or included.
He used it for web hosting but has upgraded to a newer model.
I myself would like to just use it as a basic file storage machine so would like to install XP and network it.
So is it worth it and with drivers for the raid controller slipstreamed into the xp disc will it be worth the £100 and do what i want to do with it?
Also what would it be worth as a second user machine. I know its all down to what i'd be willing to accept but i'm looking for a ball park figure.

Put it this way Mike.... I don't like to part with money except for things I really want/need... for £100 my wallet would not be in my pocket for very long!

Well, if you went on sites like Aria or Micro Direct and priced up 2 x 3Ghz 64-bit processors, 3 x 80Gb hard drives and 4Gb of memory, I don't think you would have change from 100 sobs... sounds like a bit of a bargain if you ask me....

I did a bit of research last night and i came up with,

SC1430 Server Motherboard /snip

Price new from Dell /snip

I found £100 to be a complete bargain so snapped it up this morning lol

That could be construed as blatant price driving, apart from the price being so completely :nuts: that nobody would take it seriously.....or should take it seriously, for that matter....

Glad you heard me.

I just wanted to remind you guys of this thread. Asking what things are worth isn't something we do here?

The idea was/is that if someone posts:

I have been offered $XXX for my PPC, is it good?

. It's establishing a price without a trade taking place. Etc etc.

Sorry for being off topic fftopic: But it's still slightly relevant to this thread.

Please accept my apologies, i never thought about what i was doing. I am not looking to price drive as i am not looking to part out the machine and sell it nor am i looking to sell the machine as a whole.
I was just simply illustrating that i had recieved a very good deal.
I am a very honest person who never makes a profit on anything i offer for sale and 99.9% of the time take very little for most stuff just so i get rid of it and make some cash and the buyer gets a great deal.
I apologise for asking and again for including prices.
It wont happen again.

If I was in one of my more Jobsworth moods, you would be right; however, Scrappy was asking if the item he was offered off-site was a bargain. As the item isn't on offer here and there was no risk of direct price driving, I let it pass and Imnogeek and I thought it was a steal at the price.

Obviously, the likelihood of this type of hardware being offered on a retro site like AmiBay is on a par with the second (or is it third?) coming of Amiga, so the likelihood of price driving on here for this item is very low.

Sometimes, common sense should prevail.....
