A few millennia ago I had quite a bit of good fun with Medal of Honor and Allied Assault (and I still did last year when I played them again for a bit), but I haven't looked all that much into FPS games the last years. I tried Crysis once a few years ago but I very quickly got irritated by all the in-game functions (invisibility shields and whatnot) so I tossed it aside after an hour or so.

There's so many games on the market these days that I have no idea what I should try so I was hoping someone could give me some tips on a nice single player FPS (from the last 2-3 years):

- not too much in-game options, just some guns and grenades to choose from (like abovementioned MOH games)
- preferably a realistic setting, like WWII or a more modern conflict like Afghanistan or so
- no aliens, zombies or Naali Warcows
- I'm don't really care about multiplayer
- not TOO difficult (again, MOH and MOHAA were perfect for me), I'm no hardcore gamer, just in it for some fun every now and then

Specs:
Core2Duo E8400 3GHz
2GB RAM
Radeon 6850

Spec Ops: The Line is a very simple FPS with a great story

Then you have your Modern Warfares, which are really simple fast and fun in short bursts.

Many to choose from

Call of duty 2, 3 or world at war (ww2 setting)
Call of duty 4 , black ops. ( modern fighting )
Black ops 2 is verging on sci if a little.

Battlefield is great. , 1942 or 1943 ( tanks and planes )
Battlefield bad company 1&2 are excellent single player games and funny too (vehicle based too )
Battlefield 2 & 3 are good too but are vehicle based as well as fps

Medal of Honor survives now and there is a new one, Tom Clancy also had the ghost recon games and don't forget far cry 1 - excellent game and clever AI too but has monsters ( for its day ) far cry 2 was less impressive.

For simple fps stay away from fallout 3 - more RPGs anyway but superb in my opinion , RAGE is also vehicle and fps based too.

Of course we have borderlands , red faction , and a host of sci fi monster , alien stuff.

But I would recommend call of duty single player and battlefield ( any one ) ( but they have vehicles ). Call of duty is doom with soldiers , no vehicles as such just shoot your dead and move on..

There are loads of great FPS to try..

Red Orchestra 2 (and the Darkest Hour mod)
Day of Defeat: Source
Spec Ops: The Line
Homefront
Metro 2033
PAYDAY: The Heist
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Max Payne 3
Farcry 1-3
Dishonored

Battlefield Games:
Battlefield Bad Company
Battlefield Bad Company 2

Call of Duty Games:
Call of Duty 1-3 -- set in WWII era
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1-3 -- set in modern era
Call of Duty Black Ops: World at War, 1 and 11

Medal of Honor Games:
Medal of Honor: Airborne
Medal of Honor (2007 game with just the series name)
Medal of Honor: Warfighter

You said no zombies, sci-fi etc so I've missed loads out purely because of that. But some true AA classics should be played like Half-Life 2, and someone else mentioned RAGE.

Obviously Crysis, if you can get past the hype it received, it's a pretty decent game to run through.

Then there's the obvious ones, Half-life Half-life 2, Bioshock, halo series etc, All the AAA titles have decent story making theme worth at least trying.

Deus Ex is worth checking out and I think there's a deal on over on Steam righ now.

If you're willing to venture out of the mould a bit too, I'd recommend Mirrors Edge, first person platforming, quite unique.

Dishnoured looks great...

As for older games,

StarWars: Jedi Knight series were all awesome.
System Shock 2 shouldn't be overlooked.
Soldier of Fortune
Swat 4... More multiplayer emphasised but has a decent campaign. Very much like Rainbow Six before it.

Will post more if I can remember them...

Did you guys not read the 'no aliens', 'no zombies' etc at all?

I used to be same in the DOS era... I loved doom but got bored of monsters / aliens , rise of the triad had real baddies but the game was so so..

Half life changed me tho ... But I liked the soldiers attacking best.

I'm more of real world gamers but I still like fallout and halflife stuff . Ohh blue shift was good and halfile 2 too but again monsters..

There were so many ww2 games in the 90s and 2000s but I've forgot most of them.

What was the voxel fps soldier thing in the pyramids of Egypt?

Anyway

As Harrison says

Red orchestra
Home front
Road to hell
Road to hill 30
Hells highway
Call of Juarez
Gun
Contract jack
Counter strike
Redneck revenge
Day of defeat
Delta force
Black hawk down
Front lines fuel of war
Hidden & dangerous
Project igi
No one lives forever
Soldier of fortune
Strife
Thief

And triple that list for sci fi or quake type games , crysis and doom3 etc...

Never cared much for the authentic WW2 shooters myself, but a good game is still a good game, regardless of setting ;)

Rofl sorry! I did admittedly overlook that!

I find that the only FPS that are based on real world tend to have a multiplayer focus though. I really don't know of many FPS that are newer than medal of honour and are purely human v human in story.

Only ones that come to mind are Bad Company, Far Cry and maybe dishonoured, which is set in the middle ages type times.

Download some demos and put aside a weekend .... Time will fly by

Www.downloads.com has tons of PC demos I'm sure there are lots of others ...

I did, which is why I didn't even bother to reply...all these dusty, desaturated, more-"realistic"-than-thou war shooters bore the pants off me. I miss the days when shooters involved rocket-jumping, physics abuses, techno-Lovecraft, and Mecha Hitler.

I will skip over that bit too and suggest that Duke Nukem 3d is a game that is worth revisiting.

Google eduke32 for an updated version that runs on modern platforms.
There are also updated rendering engines and the high-res pack to play with.

Playing this game on hardware more powerful than the 486 I had back in the day has been a real blast lately.
Playing with a decent frame rate and zero frame skip gives me a brand new appreciation for this great classic.

It costs nothing. Try it out, you will be satisfied.

swat 4
medal of honour "the one set in the Pacific"
and i used to really like deltaforce 2.

Hm, why didn't I think of that myself? :picard

After some googling/youtubing, I think I like Modern Warfare and Medal of Honor best. Battlefield 3's looks are awesome, but there's indeed a bit too much going on with the vehicles. I basically just want to walk around and shoot everything that moves (and maybe have a bit of nice story besides it).

A long time ago I spent thousands of hours playing Unreal Tournament (both online and offline), and since then I kind of got fed up with sci-fi themes, alien weirdos and online multiplayer (the latter because almost everyone is better than me, mostly resulting in me getting killed just seconds after respawning :().

I've played MOHAA online a few times as well, but 99% of the time all other players are far better than me. The only time I've encountered worse players than me was a few years ago when we used to play MOHAA at work during lunchtime :)

Postal 2 (if you don't mind a bit of sick & dark humour, definitely one of my favourite FPS for stress relief )

F.E.A.R & F.E.A.R 2 (F.E.A.R 3 Sucks)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R

S.W.A.T 3

S.W.A.T 4

Counter Strike

Rainbow 6

Battlefield 1942

Crysis

Have you tried "Metro 2033"?
Looks great, well told story, fantastic atmosphere, though a bit linear at times but wth.
Sequel is coming out in early 2013 hopefully.

I also enjoyed Bulletstorm and Hard Reset, though they fall into the more fantastic/Sci-Fi category. ;)

i personally enjoyed

the original Farcry (Farcey 3 is out on the 30th and looks awesome)
F.E.A.R the first one
Crysis 1 & 2
Half life 1 & 2
any console FPS is better on the PC
Unreal
AVP with direct 11 add on
Stalker
Bioshock
Deus Ex
Serious Sam (just fun running very fast and shooting everything
