If it ribbits like a frog its a frog
if it jumps like a frog its a frog
if it humps in a pond like a frog its a frog

er what was the question again ??

Would it be wrong for me to buy one of these Commodore USA 'Amiga' case jobbies and mod an actual Amiga into there?

Yes. But if you bought the actual base case from the very not-CUSA retailer that they're buying them from and did that, it'd be A-okay ;)

There's been a lot of debate about the nature of FPGA reimplementation and whether it's emulation or not.

I don't want to start that argument right now but I will say this, those of us who have:

- Space constraints
- Limited cash
- Wives

.. think about what it meant in the day to be part of the Amiga spirit. The Amiga spirit doesn't need to be cycle exact ;) - it was a concept, about doing what we do, but with:

- Limited resources
- Creativity
- Community input/brainstorming (FPGA certainly covers this)
- Fun

That's all I wanted to say.

I think most of us that have voted only for the classics can appreciate and respect that. But when it boils down to it, theyre still not technically Amigas anymore than a RetroDuo is a Super Nintendo or a Sega Megadrive.
The spirit is there and they get massive kudos points for that, but its still a recreation with non original parts.
My personal opinion only but thats how I see it. At the end of the day if it suits you better than the originals then theres nothing wrong with that atall. Some of us just need to go the extra mile and don't have the same (understandable) limitations in our lives making it as unfeasable. IMO however, it aint real unless its REAL.

I certainly couldnt plonk one of those on my desk and invite my friends around to tinker with 'my Amiga'. It would always have to be called something else when I talk about it. :D

Off the back of this thread, I found myself wondering: "What do people think of as 'Amiga'?" so I thought I'd knock up this poll and find out!

I haven't used more than classic Amigas, of the hardware options in the poll, so I don't feel I can give a full vote yet.

But two things I can say for sure. I count classic Amiga as Amiga, and I don't count Commodore USA's PCs labeled "Amiga" as Amiga.

Havent posted here in a while and I wanna so...

Emulation to me isnt Amiga, its telling your PC how to act like one.
Does anyone think of their PC as a Megadrive / Genesis when they run Fusion or KEGA? And then a SNES when they run Snes9X?

Minimig and the like may be closer, but to me theyre still just a specially engineered PCs made specifically for the purpose of acting like an Amiga.

I think Doomy said it best when he said...
Only Amiga makes it possible.
Only Amiga makes it happen ;)

Only Amiga is an Amiga.

Emulation is definitely that 'grey area' for me. For sure, it's not the real thing, but it really is a nice concept.

One thing I really do find satisfying is full-screen-ing my Spectrum emulator on my laptop and giving the sensation of a Speccy laptop.

If only the Mac version of UAE wasn't so shonky :(

Maybe is not the future, but .......

If computers from 80-90 era still in the market now, with thousands of users, modders, engineers, designers ....... supporting them. I think these are great "machines".

The fact that the 80 and 90s games are all being SOLD and BOUGHT still via Steam, and various consoles online services proves how awesome they are, too. And the only way to play them genuinely is on original hardware, lets face it...

Can anyone imagine wanting to play most modern games 15 - 20 years from now? Let alone them still selling!? I'd be willing to bet there arent as many people that would. Granted there are a few gems that deserve cllassic status, but nowhere near as many.
