I would like to just enlighten Sardine because of his embittered campaign to continue belittling me. Yes Amibay was hosted on a server that was a part of my server hosting account, so yes access could not be given because it would have provided access to my other commercial servers. This hosting was in piece for nearly 10 years, hence why the server was getting very slow.
Sardine mentions ssl. The old server didn't have a certificate included within its hosting package and the host didn't allow external certificates to be used. It was more than a 10 minute job because the older version of vBulletin 4 needed script edits and settings changed and tested or else the whole site would break if not set correctly. After so many directed attacks at me over this and my lack of site development (because I didn't have any time to devote unpaid free time to Amibay), I managed to at least shut them up and get an ssl certificated added to the site by buying one myself from the host.
Now what he isn't telling you is that years ago I said I didn't want to work on Amibay any longer and had asked the other staff to find an alternative hosting solution, and I was willing to migrate the site to the new host they provided. I have too much to do to devote the time I used to on Amibay. Years ago I would devote 2+ hours per day to the site and over the years paided over £1600 in hosting costs personally in the early days to keep the site hosted and running before I eventually forced the other staff to accept donations.
And even with my requests to find alternative hosting no other staff member bothered. I just didn't have the time to do it or work on the site due to work (I have 2 jobs), plus 2 deaths in the family, and having to sort wills and estates, clear property and sell houses. Only last year because of the pandemic did I have time to decide to not abandon Amibay but use this free time to get this done myself because lockdowns meant I ran out of freelance work for a bit. I found a new server for Amibay, and working with our Treasurer, who I must mention has contributed a lot of his free time to keeping Amibay moderation going, we secured the new server. I used over 3 weeks of my free time to migrate the site over to the new server, test the new version and then migrate the real site to it.
But what we didn't encounter in testing, but wuickly did once the site was migrated is that we all now know vBulletin 5 is basically crap. It's developers have broken everything that was great in vbulletin 4 and made it hard to use.
I haven't hornet abandoned Amibay and will be writing with a couple of new devs that are coming on board to move the site again to Xenforo. This will make it possible to install a new feedback system and have a forum software that restores features we lost before. I can't give timescales, but as soon as I have a day free I will be starting the process.
