It seems very quiet (dead) now as compared to 2 years ago? What is going on? It seems a real shame and a massive loss! Or.. Is it just my imagination?

Sometime last year the forum started to absolutely crawl, to the point where it became unusable for weeks on end. then it was 'upgraded' to whatever version of vbulletin its on now and it became a chore to use. there doesnt appear to be a way to determine how many threads are seen, there doesnt seem to be a way to show today's posts easily.

The other big issue is amibay no longer seems to be a place to get good value retro items, it's a place where people list stuff wanting maximum return. This isnt Amibay's faults as that's the way retro in general is going, but amibay now seems to be little more than an outlet for what seems to be the profiteering and scalping hole this hobby is rapidly descending down. For me both these factors mean i only occasionally come here whereas a few years ago it was a daily go-to resource.

Hi trixster. Thank you very much for informing me of the current situation. The last time I was here, everything appeared to be good. I come back less that two years later and the site is on a new server and everything appears to? Well like you said "crawl". Damn it!!. As they say "All good things come to an end etc". A real shame. Thanks again fella, and wishing you the best.

AmiBay is being upgraded again shortly and will hopefully be a lot quicker and more friendly place to visit

I disagree a bit with trixster

yes the site was slow and the recent upgrade didnt quite go to plan, hopefully the new update will fix alot of problems

I dont see profiteering happening on amibay and members can report this to admin if they beleive it is happening, yeah prices aren't what they were a few years ago but this hardware has become ever increasingly hard to find and the values will keep rising until we all loose interest again

Also due to the upgrade not going to plan new registations are currently on hold until the new upgrade, this may be what you are noticing but if I'm honest the amount of emals I get from new posts is alot per day so I think it is still quite active and an odd bargian comes along now and again.

Facebook is another good place to buy old tech but selling is another matter because people will rip you advert to shreads if they dont agree with what you have posted

ebay is ok but I never seem to win lol

EAB has a marketplace to but its not used has much has I would of expected

I think they all have thier ups and downs even amibay but I feel we are still quite active and hopefully the pending upgrade will lease new life in to the forum

I used to use Amibay a lot, and even have a blog on here, but when it all slowed down and with the "upgrade" I couldnt be bothered with the slowdown and the fact it seemed to subscribe me to every thread going....and so only check in now and then.
I am hopeful that once the migration (again) happens, and it all runs properly I shall return more frequently.

Another serious problem is total lack of feedback feature since the upgrade - previous addon used to work fine, but new version of vBulletin doesn't support it.

all the above reasons is why i quit as admin.. I fought for 2 years coming to blows with the dev MANY times, i just couldn't be bothered with all the ( rightly so ) complaints and apologising all the time, I have better things to do than worry about Amibay..

So,, if / when its fixed ( I won't hold my breath it took me 18 months to get HTTPS enabled ), if invited I will help again.

as it as right now in my eyes its unusable, very hard to see what new posts are available , one example is the left side user info is WAY to large causing a handful of posts per/page and just down right difficult to read .

fingers crossed it gets fixed....

Just want to point your eyes to the new topics tab  every new post can be found there.

I think having a pop at the "devs" is a bit unfair we all have lives and this is a hobby at the end of the day and it will sadly end up on the bottom of anyone's priority list

sorry pal you cant compare until you've wore the same boots I have,. I give you 2 yrs then we can talk about devs and real life.

real life or not 2 yrs for a 10 minute fix says it all. ( ill get to it next month ) wil be the common default message to fob you off.

If its was just a 10 minute job why didn't you ask for the permissions to do it (I'll be honest I wouldn't know where to start so it would definitely take me longer than 10 minutes)

Just so you know its my day to pick on Sardine

Wow... also it's surprising that AmiBay is using Digicert SSL cert instead of one from letsencrypt.org which is as valid as any paid cert, is free and can be painlessly generated and installed in minutes if not seconds.

Very interesting, maybe put this suggestion in the link I commented on your previous post, maybe this is something they can look into.

The forum right now is inoperable. It doesn't suffer from some issues from the upgrade, it's not a bit messy, it's completely inoperable, let's not lie to ourselves.
So for me the decline is completely justified and expected.

I'm certain though that after switching to xenforo everything will be back to normal.

The issue with the 10 minute job was because Amibay was on the devs account which meant giving me access to play and poss break Amibay would also give me access to the devs other business websites hence why 1 person had the keys to amibay and metaphorically meant holding us to ransom without any root access. So we had to wait. And wait. And complain and wait some more and wait a bit longer all the time playing nice as he did threaten to switch Amibay off so i quit rather than ruin it for everyone because i’d simply had enough of the excuses passed deadline or whatever.

Our SSL certificate is included as part of the standard server hosting cost, so is no extra cost.

I would like to just enlighten Sardine because of his embittered campaign to continue belittling me. Yes Amibay was hosted on a server that was a part of my server hosting account, so yes access could not be given because it would have provided access to my other commercial servers. This hosting was in piece for nearly 10 years, hence why the server was getting very slow.

Sardine mentions ssl. The old server didn't have a certificate included within its hosting package and the host didn't allow external certificates to be used. It was more than a 10 minute job because the older version of vBulletin 4 needed script edits and settings changed and tested or else the whole site would break if not set correctly. After so many directed attacks at me over this and my lack of site development (because I didn't have any time to devote unpaid free time to Amibay), I managed to at least shut them up and get an ssl certificated added to the site by buying one myself from the host.

Now what he isn't telling you is that years ago I said I didn't want to work on Amibay any longer and had asked the other staff to find an alternative hosting solution, and I was willing to migrate the site to the new host they provided. I have too much to do to devote the time I used to on Amibay. Years ago I would devote 2+ hours per day to the site and over the years paided over £1600 in hosting costs personally in the early days to keep the site hosted and running before I eventually forced the other staff to accept donations.

And even with my requests to find alternative hosting no other staff member bothered. I just didn't have the time to do it or work on the site due to work (I have 2 jobs), plus 2 deaths in the family, and having to sort wills and estates, clear property and sell houses. Only last year because of the pandemic did I have time to decide to not abandon Amibay but use this free time to get this done myself because lockdowns meant I ran out of freelance work for a bit. I found a new server for Amibay, and working with our Treasurer, who I must mention has contributed a lot of his free time to keeping Amibay moderation going, we secured the new server. I used over 3 weeks of my free time to migrate the site over to the new server, test the new version and then migrate the real site to it.

But what we didn't encounter in testing, but wuickly did once the site was migrated is that we all now know vBulletin 5 is basically crap. It's developers have broken everything that was great in vbulletin 4 and made it hard to use.

I haven't hornet abandoned Amibay and will be writing with a couple of new devs that are coming on board to move the site again to Xenforo. This will make it possible to install a new feedback system and have a forum software that restores features we lost before. I can't give timescales, but as soon as I have a day free I will be starting the process.

profiteering? Have a look in one of the commercial seller’s forum, just yesterday…. Timtheloon

We're all doing our bit including the new Mods whose help has been really appreciated :)
