Don't let Timtheloon hear you say that, his ego is big enough already lol

I would like to just enlighten Sardine because of his embittered campaign to continue belittling me. Yes Amibay was hosted on a server that was a part of my server hosting account, so yes access could not be given because it would have provided access to my other commercial servers. This hosting was in piece for nearly 10 years, hence why the server was getting very slow.

Sardine mentions ssl. The old server didn't have a certificate included within its hosting package and the host didn't allow external certificates to be used. It was more than a 10 minute job because the older version of vBulletin 4 needed script edits and settings changed and tested or else the whole site would break if not set correctly. After so many directed attacks at me over this and my lack of site development (because I didn't have any time to devote unpaid free time to Amibay), I managed to at least shut them up and get an ssl certificated added to the site by buying one myself from the host.

Now what he isn't telling you is that years ago I said I didn't want to work on Amibay any longer and had asked the other staff to find an alternative hosting solution, and I was willing to migrate the site to the new host they provided. I have too much to do to devote the time I used to on Amibay. Years ago I would devote 2+ hours per day to the site and over the years paided over £1600 in hosting costs personally in the early days to keep the site hosted and running before I eventually forced the other staff to accept donations.

And even with my requests to find alternative hosting no other staff member bothered. I just didn't have the time to do it or work on the site due to work (I have 2 jobs), plus 2 deaths in the family, and having to sort wills and estates, clear property and sell houses. Only last year because of the pandemic did I have time to decide to not abandon Amibay but use this free time to get this done myself because lockdowns meant I ran out of freelance work for a bit. I found a new server for Amibay, and working with our Treasurer, who I must mention has contributed a lot of his free time to keeping Amibay moderation going, we secured the new server. I used over 3 weeks of my free time to migrate the site over to the new server, test the new version and then migrate the real site to it.

But what we didn't encounter in testing, but wuickly did once the site was migrated is that we all now know vBulletin 5 is basically crap. It's developers have broken everything that was great in vbulletin 4 and made it hard to use.

I haven't hornet abandoned Amibay and will be writing with a couple of new devs that are coming on board to move the site again to Xenforo. This will make it possible to install a new feedback system and have a forum software that restores features we lost before. I can't give timescales, but as soon as I have a day free I will be starting the process.

and what Harrison is not telling you ( are we doing this ?? )

SSL you TOLD us it was 10 minutes work. its in one of your posts in the admin area. you told us you would do it in the next 2 weeks which took you 2 years,. i kid you not.

to "shut us up" lol, 3 admins have quit because of your week on week excuses one i respect and wish was back here "Bas" if he was back full time and merlin could spend more time here Amibay would be a totally different beast and things would get sorted,.,
it took 4 months of "badgering" asking you to set merlin back as Admin ( as at this time only myself and Davideo was doing ANY moderation at all the 2 of us were basically running Amibay for almost 2 yrs without help ),
in the end we got so frustrated we asked an old retired Admin to come back and help ( he had root access ) and with in 1 day yes "1 DAY" Merlin was admin, no matter the bugs ( a few permission fixes ) or whatever it was done and he could help.

lets get this right when you announced Amibay was to find its own server ( because you got fed-up of us demanding access/keys to OUR server you don't own Amibay it was handed over to the members LONG ago pal many years even before I joined back in 2012 Amibay wasn't yours ),,
you gave us a 6 month deadline, well us i mean me and Davideo what do we know about hosting, we tried our best contacting other staff asking who was still able to help , but without your input we were stuck in limbo trying to find an affordable host that could be managed with little experience.
we were VERY BOTHERED and created a facebook group to discuss server options etc and who we could approach as new mods.

the problem with Amibay is who can you trust as a dev,, Harrison I would trust with my details without hesitation just not your commitment to any actual target. Amibay is mostly a trading site and handing the "keys" over to an "unknown" is risky this is what mostly got us stuck as we tried to find an option that would allow the same functionality as old Amibay and able to manage it ourselves with limited experience without dependance on a new unknown dev.

and to set the record straight.. I was DEAD against VB5, I asked you not to upgrade to VB5 but to transfer VB4 as it was to a faster server, I know you said most hosts wont support VB4 anymore but the likes of EAB are still on VB3 and they have no issues with security, i don't see your old website ( still on VB4 ) getting hacked.

what alarms me in a way is you was all up for VB5, being your day job wouldn't you know already that VB5 was "crap" ?? its your day job to know this stuff right ??

you said after xmas you would move amibay to Xenforo, ( even a nice chap here said he would pay for it all ), its now March ( 3 months past deadline sort of ) and we have had NO new member signups for 6 months, Amibay is bleeding to death no one new can join and i see tunble weed passing each day and we might be lucky to keep it alive if we don't see Xenforo before July ?

Miggymad and timtheloon ( who I was demanding he joined as a mod, i even badgered him to hurry up and join :D ) do currently have a nice spring in their step,,,, I give them 1 yr, please prove me wrong maybe 2yrs at most before they quit as same sh1t diff day with anything. I can guarantee if Davideo decides to hang-up his keyboard ( and he nearly did a couple of times ) thats the nail in fior coffin for Amibay.

I was here for 10 years almost 8 of them as a mod and them half/admin mod so I could help with signups and scammers etc.

I dont want to see Amibay die but the ice is already melting and you watching with a drink in your hand from afar.

oh and dont forget the part about "stop badgering me or I will switch Amibay off" threat. ye that right there,,,, shut up or put up... so I quit. have a nice day.

I do hope Amibay gets a new dev the ONLY member of staff I have issues with is yes,, YOU,, your the boy who cried wolf.. I won't believe it until i see it. I beg you just to prove me wrong FIX Amibay.

Harrison Sardine

Have the pair of you finished bickering yet?

I have great respect for you both but it's high time you grew up and started acting your ages! Neither of you are helping any here by continuing to point fingers at each other.

So kindly put a sock in it.

Thank you.

You forget to mention the other new mods currently helping out here
- comraider, StrongARM, 3246251196 and myself.

I am currently giving every second i can spare to Amibay and happy to do so.

Although I didn't mention names I thanked all of you in post #13 lol

Whatever you do guys, please do it quickly. Maybe even leave this incarnation of forum as it is, just put it in read-only/archive mode and start over from scratch. Maybe migration isn't best option time/resource-wise.

It seems very quiet (dead) now as compared to 2 years ago? What is going on? It seems a real shame and a massive loss! Or.. Is it just my imagination?

So new registrations are limited by asking on the FB page with an ID? Perhaps it's a bit too much IMO...

That is the only way I'll create an account through a FB request.

The choice to supply the requested information is up to the applicant.

I'm sure you've put more than a thought to it, but maybe there are people who are reluctant to giving the ID on the internet and thus missing out on many new stuff and we from them. Maybe there is another way to identify someone is legit without asking them for the ID?

When registrations are opened on the forum they'll be able to register as before.

Until then I'm only willing to create accounts once I've seen proof of id - which is deleted as soon as the account is created.

Let's say there's good amount off people that have been kicked out of eBay recently for pure geopolitical reasons, and FB is banned in their country(s). But, whatever ...
Have you considered commercialization of the forum as a trading platform? Maybe this would be best in the long run.
Whatever you do, be transparent. You are turning forum into club. and not everybody knows the rules.

What would be best is for the registration process to be opened again.

But that isn't going to happen for a while and has been closed for approx 3 months if not longer.

I've offered an alternative solution as a temporary measure.

The other elephant in the room not being talked about is while I have had conversations on the phone in the past with pretty much all of the Admins that served on AmiBay, the only one that I have never spoken to on the phone, in a virtual meeting or in person is Harrison. We've exchanged messages on various platforms but every time I've offered to call him to clear the air on something, I was stonewalled because of some sort of disorder that prevents him from talking on the phone. Quite how you manage IT for some clients without being able to talk on the phone or on the likes of Teams is odd, to say the least. We did even have a Admins virtual meeting on OoVoo once, however, I never asked Harrison about if Zoom, Teams, Webex, Oovoo etc. were an option, as I would likely have got the same response. To say that it's made life difficult at times to run the site over the years is massively understating things. This is not meant as a slight against Harrison, it's a statement of facts.
