I see where @Harrison is coming from but if we now have history to fall back on this should be OK

Always have had thread history since vBulletin 3. Merlin can explain the reasons for you as he has been involved in all the Amibay fraud cases over the years, including UK and US police involvement. We had big issues early on in the life of the site.

I believe that 99.9% of our members are honest (or at least I hope so ;) ) for the other .1% we have full history of each and every Topic/Post available to all Staff.

I think it's time we trusted our members to be civil and honest and those that aren't will be dealt with.

We need to reduce the workload on the Staff and this is one way to do that.
We now only need to Close and Move Topics and don't have to set every Topics Prefix from Wanted, For Sale to Found, Sold, etc.

At the bottom of each Post is a Report link - if there are problems with a Topic/Post this should be used to bring it to the attention of the staff and we can then investigate.

@ Comraider - we've had instances in the past where the seller has changed prices or the number/availability of an item when the sale(s) has/have not been declared complete. Price driving (gouging) is something that we don't like or tolerate.

I seem to remember editing the 1st post when i was a regular here.
recent posts i had to add additional posts because if i edited the 1st one it would get sent in to review purgatory.

i still think the title should be fixed but allow the thread starter to modify the prefix

V5 caused a problem with some members and Staff had to step in and approve the Topic.

I know these two are extreme examples but just think of the work that would be involved for Mods if the OP couldn't edit his first post after an hour?

We've got to start trusting our members to do things right and when they don't we'll drop on them like a ton of bricks.

i thought for sure I replied to this but I guess not :P

My confusion was regarding how changing the thread title would lead to fraud.. I don't see that.
Changing the post could, but we always have the history to look at if something goes wrong. I think it's better to assume that most of our members aren't fraudsters and let them edit. If anyone tries to scam someone, then we take swift action. It's not as if we have a deluge of scammers roaming wild to make us take a draconian approach from the get-go.. just my 2 cents.

True, but I'm still here to patrol the border and take any scammers down. 'Merlock Holmes' posts some of the more high-profile cases from his files, as a deterrent.

Yes, this was a vBulletin 5 bug, not by design. It was randomly only happening for some members. Good Amibay is shot of vBulletin. Their devs destroyed a great forum software when the messed so much with it from version 4 to 5. Sad. But Xenforo Amibay is now running on is made by the same devs who wrote vBulletin 4 before they left that company. That's why this new forum software is so good.

A thought regarding the prevention of scammers and fraud. As is a given there are far less active moderators and admins on Amibay compared to years ago. But something worth considering is forum specific moderators. This is something we tried to explore years ago, but couldn't at the time find volunteers or maybe didn't quite get across what the role was.

The idea is for a few members to just be low level moderators, policing one area such as just sales, or one sub forum inside of sales such as Amiga. All they would be required to do is look at the new posts and report anything that needs looking at. Maybe also able to close and archive sales too. Then full mods would only need to concentrate on reported sales and deal with them. Thus reducing mod load.

But obviously volenteers for such a role would need to be recruited. You also couldn't use commercial sellers or large volume private sellers because of a clash of loyalty.

You have VIP members doing nothing, maybe recruit those who still frequent the forum?

As a VIP they can change topic prefixes as required.
The only thing they can't do at the moment is Move Topics into the Archive.

I'm also going to be contacting all of the Mods that aren't active and see if they're willing to help out now that we've got XenForo.

One of which has already said he'll help out as time allows.

Update:

We've currently got 11 Mods (not including the currently active Mods) that I need to speak to and ask if they're willing to help.

We've also got 41 VIPs that may also offer help.
