I just had a cool idea. If they put near field (inductive) charging technology into a mouse mat that also contained the wireless transmitter (connected via USB), then the wireless mice would be constantly charged, so you could use it indefinitely.

could also use friction and clock springs, or pendulums and kinetic energy.

as for wired vs wireless..
for competative fps tournys you need a lazer wireless imo. with adjustable weights.
pixel perfect aiming is something that is very hard to accomplish with anything els.

I find that at the moment I have only wired mouses. This is not a conscious decision but more like evolution... survival of the fittest.

All the wireless mice have gone missing so only the wired mouses remain. They do not go missing because, well, they´re attached to my pc and to my amiga by a wire!

Nice idea! I'd be a teeny bit wary of having an induction charging plate in anything my hand's going to be resting on for multiple hours per day - but that's just because I don't fully understand how it works yet.

Also worth noting that the mouse that accompanies Wacom pads works in a vaguely similar way - it doesn't charge as such, since there's no battery, but the tablet induces enough power in a receiver within the mouse (or pen for that matter) for it to respond with motion and button information.

optical suck btw..
just thought id mention it lol.
optical eat batteries like there is no tomorrow. struggle to use some mouse mats "most". and generraly are like 400-800. which makes them pretty inaccurate.

if its not ball it has to be laser..

Laser FTW

But Logitech's invisible optics work great too! (And don't eat batteries).

I use a wired laser mouse (a cheap and cheerful Saitek Cyborg V.3 :))... Wireless is not too great for competitve FPS gaming as it usually introduces slight input lag (some people won't notice it though).

dont get me wrong you need to spend ~£300 for a decent wireless laser mouse for tournies

the wire on wired mice can cause you half a second of issue and thats more than long enough to get your self shot lol.

£300 for a gaming mouse? You're joking right ?... I can't even find a mouse that costs that much! A wired connection is always preferable to a wireless connection (the same is also true when it comes to internet and LAN connections)... You don't have to worry about batteries dying, signal interference or input lag issues during an intense match ;).

I'm betting most 'top 10' gaming mice reviews will mostly have wired mice and maybe the odd wireless mouse if it's good enough :).

I use the Razor wired AND wireless one. Forget the name, but brilliant concept.

While I do agree that wired mouses have better accuracy and responsiveness for gaming and applications that require precision, for all-round use I'd always choose a wireless mouse. The "tail" is always stuck or in the way. Battery life in modern mice is long enough and software gives a warning about low battery well ahead.

This is my current mouse, the Roccat Kone +. 6,000 dpi, adjustable weights, onboard memory profiles, press a single button and have access to even more. Wired and perfect.

my laptop has an Asus branded logitech MX518, and my desktop has a logitech laser G7? i cant remember, but its a weighted job... that i took the weights out of for speed

however, going from amiga roller ball mice to an ami/ps2 adapter with a cheap optical mouse is like a breath of fresh air. pinpoint acurate, and responsive. finding a ps2 mouse at work is a little difficult as a result

I use a Razer Orochi on all of my pc's and laptops. Bluetooth 3.0 & also works via USB cable if you can't be arsed to pair it up or change the batteries. :)
