Tried it and it sucks so bad... there's no start button, you can't uninstall programs, you don't see nor hear what's going on on the desktop when you're in Metro so bye bye messenger messages from your buddies, you have to choose multiple options to shutdown the computer...

I will be giving this a good test out with my system tomorrow

Been trying to install this for about the last 4 hours.

Have no blank dvd's so trying to make a bootable usb drive.

Tried using the microsoft official usb tool, the rufus linked at the start of the thread and grub4dos.

Tried 4 different usb sticks, admittedly all kingston data travellers, and get the same problem with all.

Boot the computer, it starts to boot from the usb showing me picture what appears to be a fish and then the computer restarts and keeps going round in a loop.

Guess i'll have to go out and buy some dvd's tomorrow.

Download both 32bit and 64bit - gonna try this out and see how good it is - will post comments later.
I'll probably take my laptop in to work and show this to my work colleagues (we're an IT support company, so they're all as geeky as me and will be interested in this)

works okay but..

installing:

as always , remove the dvd after initial installation (first reboot) , some people are stuck in a loop of rebooting , booting from dvd and installing again & again & again...

some tips:

right click on the start menu (apps list) on the background & select show all apps
add control panel and what ever else you need to the app menu
remove junk apps that you wont use by right clicking on them and select unpick.

tips:

click show desktop & use explorer to download new graphics drivers if needed.
the internet explorer (10) doesn't like flash video so remove it (un pin from start with right click)
install chrome / safari or whatever you like and install flash.

double check the device manager in control panel for driver errors / missing.
install vista or windows7 drivers where needed.

I needed NVidia / card reader / web cam drivers (vistas are ok)

the (windows key) brings up the start app menu ( like a home button)

after messing about I like it.

but

sleep doesn't work, xbox live logic doesn't work (UK)

verdict?

Quicker than my xp service pack 3 install I had on and much quicker than the Vista my laptop cam with :-)

Spec:

intel dual core 1.86
2gb ram
asus f6j laptop

mike.

Initial impression is WTF !?!
It's kinda weird - I found it works with my laptop perfectly, didn't need to download any drivers as it recognized all my hardware out of the box.
I'll have to have more of a play with it as I've only just installed it tonight.

For those interested, my laptop is a Gateway MT3705 - it's a Pentium Dual Core @ 1.73Ghz with 2GB RAM - I installed the 32bit version, even though my laptop is 64bit capable (64bit specifies 2GB minimum RAM requirement and I don't want to have all my RAM gone on the OS)

Its good to see that Microsoft are still copying Apples Mac os and they still manage to make a mess of it.

Apps ? App store , launch menu , sync with mobile device, map app.

Nice :-)

Hey, look at that, it's kind of like the Start menu only it's a huge waste of screen space for no purpose!

Even better is that anything that would normally be in a folder in the start menu is now its own tile.

I can't wait to have an entire screen of random UNINSTALL.EXEs and README.TXTs!

Oh and both the gimmick UI and real desktop have two completely different internet explorers. So your history and bookmarks in one aren't in the other.

Doing some browsing in metro... Okay gotta open word, the office team don't like metro so to the desktop we go... switch to IE... Where's that page I was on? Why are non of my passwords saved? Hello?

Same problem with the control panel. There's a metro one and a normal one. Some stuff in the metro one opens in the windows desktop and vice versa!

Oh and they hid how you close metro programs (like a smartphone) but didn't do any process management. So basically you just use the computer until it runs out of ram, runs out of swap file, then whatever program you last looks at gets killed without so much as a "save as" popping up first.

I can't believe this. It's worse than ubuntu unity.

Are you serious? Sheez, what is this, the "completely abandon everything known to work in desktop computing and horribly botch the substitutes" decade?

There's a way around that, on the 'toolbar' for Metro based IE, there's a 'Page tools' button (picture of a little spanner) and then click 'View on Desktop' - however, once that toolbar disappears I can't think of how to get it to appear again without messing about (I pressed the Windows key twice to get out of IE and get back in to IE again) - this whole thing seems really ludicrous and I cannot work out how to use have the Metro versions of the apps!

For one thing, how do you change your home page in the Metro version of IE (I've done it in the 'desktop' version, but the Metro version doesn't use them settings)

I can predict m future right this minute ..... I can see me migrating to Linux (probably Lubuntu) within the next few years. I've slowly started to dislike Windows more and more since Vista. Windows 7 fixed some of the issues but I don't really like some of the UI concepts though. I fell out with Ubuntu once they went all 'Unity' on us (hate the Unity shell, it's just like Windows 8 Consumer Preview )

That's a bit strong - Ubuntu Unity is very bad!!!!!

you guys are aware that you are judging an os that is no-where near complete right?

did you even read the page of information before hitting download? "this is not the finished product" "it will not resemble the commercially released version" etc, etc.....

just wondering.........

Of course :-)

I don't mind it and it runs quick , so I'm okay with it.

The GUI is horrible and garish just like windows mobile & Xbox live dashboard but I guess ms like it for some bizzare reason.

Is it too much to ask for ms to make an os that works quickly without all the bull installed ( like this is at the min)

But with a nice but pretty interface ?

Most people use windows because they have to not because it's a joyful experience.

and also because there is no good alternative out there for the point and click casual user.

Mac - not enough software and a more expensive PC
Linux - not enough software and no support and too complicated

i can't see an OS beating windows for marketshare any time soon.

can anyone else think of a good alternative OS for the general masses (putting your own skill levels aside)

another worry i have is the "don't like change" brigade

Well I would disagree all day long about Mac os . I find it easier & quicker to use than windows and apart from bespoke software, it runs everything I want - which is a lot

I'm a heavy computer user , programming, art, photography, films , music and so on and on. I'm not a casual web user.

To me the Mac osx is currently the best os to use. I hate windows with a vengeance and have since xp service pack 3 killed and sucked every drop of performance from my laptop - so I bought a new laptop with vista , this was slower that the old xp laptop. So bought a Mac and I love it.

I know lots of people don't .

win xp is sooooooo old, slow and patched to hell

Vista is far too resourse hungry and buggy (although i quite liked it)

Win7 rocks!!, lightwieght (compartively) works well out of the box and is rock solid. there is no comparison Win7 kicks XPs butt:nod:

True Justin and I agree but ms dropped the ball , big time and really ****ed a lot of people off.

I don't want to rant on about windows.

The Mac is the best piece of modern computer equipment I have ever bought. Fast , reliable and easy to use.

So far windows8 is quick. That's it. Let's see how the updates kill it

Let's face it ms are in big trouble.
