True Justin and I agree but ms dropped the ball , big time and really ****ed a lot of people off.

Xp is very old but why wasn't a new os released or atleased revised? Nope patch patch and erm patch , then vista! On my new dual core laptop I could not type in the web browser! Press a key & wait and wait and wait .. Then the letter appeared.

And I'm not joking!

The Mac is the best piece of modern computer equipment I have ever bought. Fast , reliable and easy to use.

So far windows8 is quick. That's it.

Let's face it ms are in big trouble.

but the Mac is a PC right?:run:

That's it Justin!

Yes of course your right. It's a pc but

And a big but! It's the os and the ease of use that separates a good os from a bad one.

I know people that like vista but they have beards and have a liking for bicycle clips also.
Then again some people like the 1975 Cadillac and crushed velvet suits.

I don't want to rant on about windows.

Let's face it ms are in big trouble.

MS are in big trouble? terrible os for years (until 7) and still there is no competition for them os wise? seems more like the others are dropping the ball here

iOS & Andriod are killing pc sales. The days of Ms as a dominant company are gone

aahhhh, i didn't realize we had changed on to mobile os:lol:;), i thought we were talking about desktop os:p

desktop - A Forrester Research study of desktop operating systems used in North American and European companies in 2010 found Windows 7 on 10% of all commercial desktops, Windows XP on 75% and Vista on 7% leaving 8% for all other OS

Netbook -
The netbook market has been dominated by Microsoft Windows, with Linux in second place.
Initially, Linux dominated the netbook market when Asus started it with the Eee PC in October 2007, but this lead did not last long. Asus and Acer, which accounted for 90% of the early netbook market, installed Linux on 30% of their machines.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems#cite_note-23
Microsoft responded by extending the sales of Windows XP hone Edition. By February 2009, Microsoft cited data from NPD Retail Tracking Service which showed that US market share of Windows on netbooks went from under 10% to 96%.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems#cite_note-24
In November 2009, an analyst at ABI said that of the 35 million netbooks to ship globally in 2009, 68% would have Windows and 32% Linux.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems#cite_note-25
According to DisplaySearch, netbooks and tablets rose from just under a 14% share of the overall portable computer market in third quarter of 2008 to around 20% in the second quarter of 2009, and remained at around 20% until the middle of 2010. During 2010, Apple's ipad tablet computer gained a 6.5% share of this market sector in the first quarter and DisplaySearch forecast this will rise to 30% in the second.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems#cite_note-26

so all in all i don't think MS are going to panic too much

what i think people on here forget is that we in general are not average users and as such we are in the minority, i really do believe that we forget that the masses are stupid and just because we know a certain OS is better it doesn't mean that it will take over

Android and iOS will morph to desktop and we will have converging os devices. Mac os did it a couple of years ago slowly and the the next update to osx will be more tablet based or themed
let's say.

As pc sales drop ms will have problems , tablets and iOS sale far out strip pc sales.

I doubt that Windows8 will reverse that trend?

but windows mobile is now out selling iOS, if it is integration the masses require then surely they will follow what they have? PC - Windows, Phone - Windows, Console - Windows

over time their market share will be reduced, but as i said earlier i don't see MS being overtaken anytime soon.

also Windows 8 is aimed at a touch screen tablet based OS, there is a chance they will get a PC based tablet like OS into home and common use long before Android and Apple get a look in.

i feel i must state here that i really like Andriod and iOS (although the apple flavour is a little restrictive for my taste), but just because i like them it doesn't mean world domination. I love the Amiga OS but that ain't gonna set the world on fire either ;)

Windows 7 is the only reason I came back to windows from Linux and built a gaming PC. It is the best OS out there right now.

I am also sure win 8 will be just as good once they hear people moan and make the right changes, or at least make it easy to turn stuff off.

I predict Windows 8 will see an evolution of laptops by the quick inclusion of touchscreens to enhance the tablet design.

Yes possibly so , haven't ms done this once and failed ?

But your right a fast windows laptop/tablet should sell loads..

I don't know why ms find all this so hard.

Installed it on my new i5 system and I have to say and didn't think I would but I like it.

It seems quicker in doing everything you need to do and even installing the OS was quick. Of course I am still finding my way around it as there are some things I can't seem to find yet.

Also I know its mostly for touch screens and maybe I will get one just for Windows 8, but for a desktop PC without a touch screen its still seems quicker in doing anything you want.

You don't get the start button when your in desktop mode but you can press the windows key and you have all the boxes with your stuff up in front of you.

I can really see Linux copying this as its very simple yet affective.

I believe the Metro part of Windows 8 is Microsoft's answer to moving users over to payed subscriptions e.g. Office Live and the App store on desktop PC's, to generate more revenue and market share. It does seem like Microsoft have rushed at this to try to keep up with the industry trend.

I don't really think we need 'Apps' for a desktop PC, just good software to do the tasks we want to accomplish. Apps are more suited to mobile devices. I'd rather have a software package that has a license and doesn't expire too rapidly or need a yearly subscription.

If the feedback in this thread is anything to go by it could be a good representation of the user base and if MS gets bad feedback about Win8 beta I wonder if they might change strategy and maybe make Metro open source like HP did with their stuff.

Yep a Russian script is out to disable the hideous menu system too.

I hate the touch screen idea, hell my main screen was only about £150 brand new, which is not expensive and I won't even touch that lol.

I agree. It's just a marketing gimmick.

We have also gone full circle and have glossy screens again. Several years ago the thinking and ergonomic guidelines were to get rid of glossy screens because they caused headaches due to reflections and fingerprints. Now we have glossy touchscreens  I expect somebody will be making and selling anti-glare screen covers again very soon. :D
